The link between nutrition and anger

Have you ever noticed that what you eat can impact your mood?

When you feel threatened, wronged, abused, or oppressed, you naturally get angry, but also the food we eat can change how we feel and how angry we are!

A diet high in trans fatty acids and processed foods has been linked to being more angry and irritable, according to some research work. The body goes into a fight-or-flight response when it is hungry, which can make people angry.

Here are some foods and techniques that can help to reduce anger:

  • Probiotic-rich foods: Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi help restore gut balance and may improve mood.

  • Anti-inflammatory diet: Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds support both gut and brain health.

  • Mindful eating: Reducing stress while eating - through slow, intentional meals - can improve digestion and emotional regulation.

Participation question:

Knowing and comprehending your anger enables you to feel it and use it in a transformative way such as to motivate personal growth, social change, and constructive action when understood and channeled effectively.

  • How do you deal with anger?
  • What steps are you taking to comprehend your anger?

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

How do you deal with anger? I try to detect the warning signs before an explosion happens and leave the triggering situation and or use self talk to avert anger.

What steps are you taking to comprehend your anger? I see that much of my anger is due to expecting that something will happen a certain way and it does not.

@soulsings

Knowing the warning signs that something is going to escalate can help in many ways. I believe expectations are the breeding soil for anger.

There are two ways to be angry.

Either one gets angry and makes accusations or worse - gets insulting or violent

OR... the anger is reactive to someone else's anger or (perceived) slight

I rarely am angry. I try to understand first and it might take a long time. If someone is angry with me, I am not very reactive. Yes, I can realize I am aggressed and raise my voice, but... it's not anger. It's more towards seeking justice for myself. If it does not work, I will just leave in order to get peace at least.

Injustice towards myself or someone else is often at the root of my anger.

If I am famished, I get impatient however. So a snack before dinner will help.

I have taken a few steps and often feel that my IQ, such as it is, gives me the right words. I do not get physical at all. In two-three cases, I was not afraid of talking back at a whole crowd of people in order to get justice or protection from them.

If there is a strong disagreement that cannot be resolved vocally, I will end up writing sandwich letters and those work.

@Fradiga

It seems you're well grounded so anger has little chance to breed. I can relate to experiencing injustice towards myself or others, something I find difficult to stay quiet but rather speak up.

Well, justified anger helps that way. In fact, people are so surprised to see me get in that state that they might just stare. But those moments of anger do not last at all, because once I have spit out the reason why.... I am immediately at peace.

  • How do you deal with anger?
I listen to or write songs that resonate with me when I’m angry as a way to not only get the anger out but also to make it look like someone else understands me and what I’m going through. Journaling and going out on walks are very helpful too.

  • What steps are you taking to comprehend your anger?

Same steps as I take to deal with it in addition to being careful and mindful about what I’m eating, eating slowly,  how much sleep I get, the quality of sleep I’m getting, and writing everything I know that causes me to get angry so I can deal with and work on each cause 100% one at a time

How do you deal with anger?

When I am angry I shout. I get a build up of pressure in my chest. My hands feel hot. I try to take a breath and say what I am feeling.

I agree with other people that anger can happen when expectations aren't met. I often get angry when I am overtired and I just want things to go a certain way so they are over with. And I certainly see this in my four year old, who gets angry when expectations don't turn out.

What steps are you taking to comprehend your anger?

I enjoyed the video meditation here of the hot air balloon. I think often I dissociate so the suggestion to detach from emotions and events rather than from myself seems like a useful adjustment.

I use the Fabrice Midal meditations oh the Centr app often. There are a few, like Name and Tame your Emotions and How to Stop Giving a F in a Few Minutes.

I will remove myself from a situation that is escalating.

I used to avoid conflict but I found that didn't help my inner frustration and landscape so I am trying new ways of communicating how I feel. I am making a lot of mistakes.

I did not have healthy models for anger as a kid so I am learning a lot.

@StrugglingPeach

Good idea to look at your present energy levels and whether your expectations are simply set too high when feeling anger comes up. It must have been rough for you seeing adults not being able to deal with their anger. Glad you teach yourself now so you can be a good role model for your child.

I had not thought about the relationship between anger and nutrition before. I do eat a lot of fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and (dairy free) yoghurt. I supplement my microbiome. I struggle to eat kimchi or sauerkraut.

I don't eat that many trans fatty acids of processed foods.

It was interesting to reflect on this, thank you.

Sounds like you have a healthy diet! 👍 Kimchi or Sauerkraut are not everybody's taste and can be replaced other things. You can find some information here. Great that you stay away from transfats!

How do you deal with anger?

I've always had anger issues. I do get furious but I'm also extremely emotional. When I do get angry, I disconnect and like to be alone. I've been in situations where I've hurt people verbally and physically in the past.

What steps are you taking to comprehend your anger?

Knowing the root cause of my anger. Identification and elimination.

Uncontrolled anger can cause much pain to others but also to us. Good that you take care of your feelings now and I hope you can forgive yourself for anything that needs forgiving of the past.
