Free yourself or Getting out of the Mental Loop

If only I would have left early enough nothing would have happened. If only I would have told him. If only the bus would have come on time. If only I knew they would accept me I could calm down now. If only there would be someone I know.

Nothing is more draining to me than worrying or thinking about the same thing over and over again. It simply does not help us. What sadly happens though is that we get caught up in a mental loop which intensifies our feelings of worry and regret more and more and over time will cause sleep problems and difficulties to manage our daily tasks.

We need to get out of that mental loop and see the bigger picture again. But how?

  • Remind yourself that these intrusive thoughts are just that: thoughts. If we do not cling to them they will pop like bubbles.

  • Try to redirect your attention from your thoughts to something important that requires your focus or something you want to get absorbed into, like a hobby or a walk outside.

  • Do a mindful exercise like meditation, yoga or tai chi. When we are more self aware it is easier to monitor symptoms and mood-shifts and take preventive steps for getting caught up in negative thoughts.

  • It can also help to get the thoughts out of your head and onto a piece of paper or in a journal.

  • Talk to a friend

  • Focus on what you have control over:

    • Things we can’t control

    • Things we have some control over

    • Things we have complete control over

  • Focus on what is meaningful in your life

How are you dealing with repeated unwanted thoughts?

Mental stress caused by excessive rumination or worries can lead to serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feel depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if you feel they are related to any mental challenges.

@Optimisticempath

Sometimes unwanted and negative thoughts can be so persuasive that we believe them unquestionably and it is hard to stop them. Nice that you do not feed them by paying attention to them and also journal. I hope it will get easier with time.

True freedom from a mental loop comes after the realization that there is no loop to get out of, since this is a matter of mentality freedom is completely mental. Find freedom in the lack of what can enslave, because of dualistic thinking people contradict their own thoughts which feed other thoughts. The end to the dualistic thinking that feeds this loop is interdependence. Don't support the thoughts you agree with and don't fight the thoughts you don't agree with.

@amiablePeace77

I can certainly relate to unwanted thoughts. Sometimes so much that I feel like God is going to punish me for thinking nasty thoughts. I know now that is not the case. I have struggled with people-pleasing all my life for approval and acceptance. I am much better than I used to be. NO is one of my favorite words these days. A lot of times you have no control of what comes into your mind, but you don't have to dwell on it. I still get pangs of selfishness when I want to put myself first. I know now that is not selfish but healthy.

@amiablePeace77 How are you dealing with repeated unwanted thoughts?

I try to observe them and see where they are coming from. Is this something I can do something about? If not what is the point of dwelling on it. I do not enjoy whitewashing everything and say this is all wonderful. Pain is pain but saying it is not is confusing.

I try not to react and get lost in my thoughts. Breathing helps me calm down and remain calm.

@amiablePeace77 I usually try to do something to distract from them during the day - a walk or a game. But alot of times they hit when its bed time and I'm tired and just want some sleep

@mytwistedsoul

It’s awful when your mind can’t stop thinking but your body needs to sleep. During the day it’s often easier because we can distract ourselves. Something I find helpful is to have a pen and paper next to my bed and write all thoughts down to free the mind. Others things I consider helpful are doing a meditation, yoga, tai chi or qigong to calm body and mind.

@amiablePeace77 I've allways found tai chi interesting. I've never heard of qigong though. But looking into it I saw it mentioned deep breathing and that would be really helpful. Anxiety has been an issue for as long as I can remember. Thank you for the ideas!

I find qigong is very helpful for many different health issues. Here is a link for qigong lessons, but there are many good ones on the interenet so this is just an example Qi Gong - Lesson #1

@amiablePeace77 I really enjoyed this. I've only had a chance to watch the first lesson but I like that it's low impact. It makes me think of a commercial where the kid comments about slow mo karate lol :) Thank you again

I was in a situation yesterday where I was having negative thoughts about someone. I was thinking they always, they never. Illl just blast them with hareful text so they would feel as bad as I did. I didn’t. Thank God I caught myself. I realized the wrong though patterns and stopped. It turned out I was so far off base. I’m so relieved I didn’t destroy a relationship over anxiety and self doubt.
