Mindful Eating

Many people tend to eat their meals quickly, especially because our lives often feel busy and hurried, with little time to sit down and relax. Studies have shown that slowing down and paying more attention when eating, which is called mindful eating, is better for your health. Slow eating may also promote better digestion and help prevent overeating.

How do you feel different when you eat quickly compared to eating slowly?

If I eat too quick then I feel like throwing up I have to eat slowly in order to process my food correctly

@pamharley003

That seems stressful, and I can imagine you're having a hard time really enjoying your food. Something I find helpful to slow down eating is putting down your cutlery in between.

I have always preferred not to sit too long at a meal. Like Napoleon, it's 20 minutes, top. I make exceptions for eating out or guests or invitations. I think the reason is that I do not like food that has grown cold.

One thing that can keep me at the table these days is having a good comedian video to watch while I eat.

How do you feel different when you eat quickly compared to eating slowly?

@Fradiga

Sitting for a long time while eating can cause some health problems, like trouble with digestion or higher blood sugar. Moving around after eating can help improve your health in many ways.

When I was in hospital a few years ago, I HAD to eat slowly as I could not swallow well and was partially paralyzed. (Since recovered!) I was enormously grateful to the all concerned-from the nurses and technicians and physicians to the kitchen staff who went out of their way to make amazing food for me. Before each meal I would pause briefly to reflect on this and with each slow bite, send thanks. I developed a systematic eating meditation that started with the earth that grew the food; the plants themselves; the farmers and family who grew and picked the food; the truckers who brought the food to the facility; the staff who prepared the food; those who brought me food; those who washed the dishes; etc. It can be as elaborate or as simple as you want, even down to a simple heartfelt, “thank you for this food.” But doing this has changed the way I eat. Not the amount of time I spent at one sitting but the manner in which I consume. I eat when I eat now and no longer mindlessly do so, when before I could as well been chewing a bowl of cardboard flakes with plastic nuggets b/c I was usually reading.

Sometimes, the toughest times teach us the most. It must have been very scary for you. So glad to hear that you recovered!

I notice a significant difference when I slow down and pay attention to my meal. Eating slowly helps me appreciate the flavors, textures, and experience of eating rather than treating it as something to rush through. I also find that I feel more satisfied and aware of when I am actually full.

When I eat quickly, especially during busy or stressful periods, I tend to be less aware of what I am eating and sometimes finish a meal without fully enjoying it. Slowing down encourages me to be more present and intentional, which makes the experience feel more nourishing both physically and mentally.

This post is a good reminder that mindfulness can be practiced in everyday activities, not only during meditation or quiet reflection. Even something as routine as eating can become an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with the present moment.

It's amazing what benefits we can get by eating mindfully and also that we can practise mindfulness in so many daily routines, even washing the dishes mindfully!

Eating mindfully can train our brains to stay focused on the meal. The video about mindful eating can be a great practise!
