Trauma Support Community Check-In for May 2023

User Profile: audienta
audienta May 19th, 2023

Hello together,

Since recently becoming a community mentor here, I've been wandering around the sub-community and realized that there aren't any check-ins going at the moment, right? (correct me if I'm wrong!) So I thought, I'd start with a monthly check-in.

Trauma Support Community Check-In for May 2023

1) How would you describe this month so far within one sentence?

2) What were your biggest challenges?

3) What were your biggest achievements?

Take care,

audienta

@audienta

It is hard to stay on track for me with my husband having Dementia and he has these rages where he just yells and cusses at me and that is a major trigger for me that I have to get away from him to keep from hitting him or going off the deep end that I would regret. I find these kinds of issues make it hard for me to let go of. So I am still in struggle mode.

@audienta - Thank you for resuming check-ins!

It's been okay but a little strange. I feel fine. Things are uncertain, but I think things will fall into place, maybe. We'll see.

A current big challenge is finding a new job before this current one ends.

A recent accomplishment is applying to a train-to-hire program. I feel brave.

Another accomplishment is I'm getting closer to finishing the book I've been reading. Here's a bit I wrote down from today:

"Only by getting in touch with your body, by connecting viscerally with your self, can you regain a sense of who you are, your priorities and values." - Body Keeps The Score

Good job, and I wish you much success on the new training job, I have the audio book of the Body Keeps The Score. What do you think about this book?

@WorkingitThrough2 - It has been very validating and I am learning a lot and open to the things the author is saying. I really appreciate the history of the treatments he references! I'm curious what in the book has further research. I think it's fascinating. It gives me hope for mental health advocacy. It always feels so stagnant, but there is progress. I'm not finished quite yet. It's really cool that you have the audio book! What did you think?

@wontwakewontsleep

I agree with you. I have learned a lot about how trauma not only affects us mentally but how it travels into Physical and adult problems if not corrected, When I first began Therapy, all they knew saw narcotics and sedatives to keep you sleep where you could not function nor think

@WorkingitThrough2 - Yes it's been really validating in that way! Knowing that it's no fault of my own understanding and also hope for maybe being able to rewire my brain over time. Medicine was heavily pushed on me and I worried for me it masked symptoms without dealing with any issues. I think each person needs their own combination of whatevers and no one thing should be pushed as a cure-all. I just finished reading about EMDR and neurofeedback! I'm curious to see if I can find those services. That might be something.

@wontwakewontsleep

I hope you are able to try EMDR. They have a few self-teaching versions on youtube. My old therapist try it for me, but with the DID, it was not productive it was too much resistance from insiders being fearful of extinction I think.
