Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-In: Wednesday 20 May
Traumatic Experiences Check-In 20 May 2020
Good morning everyone and thank you for taking the time to participate in todays Check-in. Todays topic is about How one would seek help with trauma. Some survivors of trauma are reluctant to seek help from a mental health professional because they may think of it as being a sign of weakness. It is best not to wait if one feels they are suffering from trauma. Many treatment options are available that can help either you or them feel better and overcome the stressful feelings and situations which come from trauma. The question is how does one seek help from said trauma and what kind of help is there for all of us?
Aside from Listeners and the wonderful therapists here at 7 cups of Tea; there is SAMHSA a confidential, free, 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year, information service, in English and Spanish, for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders. This service provides referrals to local treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based organizations. Callers can also order free publications and other information. SAMHSA's number is 1-800-662-HELP (4357). Below I will discuss various forms of treatment for individuals suffering from trauma providing a brief explanation of each one.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
This type of well-researched "talk" therapy is strongly recommended for the treatment of PTSD. It's also regularly used to treat depression and anxiety in people who have gone through a trauma. When seeking Cognitive Behavioral Therapy the goal is to work through the negative, harmful thought patterns challenging them along the way. If one believes that terrible things will always happen for example; their therapist may try to change the individuals tendency to over-generalize, so that they are better equipped to evaluate situations. These sessions can be in a one-on-one setting or in group therapy sessions.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
This particular type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on detailing the trauma. One might be asked to write their account of the trauma in hopes to adjust ones response to the trauma. This is done with assistance from ones therapist. It may also be combined with other CBT techniques.
Prolonged Exposure (PE)
This is yet another sub form of CBT. This is basically what it sounds like: One will slowly and repeatedly be "exposed" to the traumatic event, either by imagining it in detail or, if possible, going to a place or re-creating a situation similar to your event. Though many people desperately want to avoid thinking about the trauma because it is so stressful; deliberately and strategically reliving it within the safe confines of therapy is one of the best ways for it to lose its power over them.
Brief Eclectic Psychotherapy (BEP)
This form of treatment shares some similarities with CBT, however it is a much more centered approach designed to take place across several sessions. The individual will be asked to bring a supportive person with them to the first session. During that session, the individual will provide an overview of their trauma while the therapist outlines future sessions. In sessions after this, the individual will relive the trauma by talking about it as if it is happening in the present. The individual might be asked to bring in clothing, mementos, or other items to help get through the process. Halfway through the sessions, the appointments focus on how the trauma has changed the individuals view of theirself and the world around them. They will also talk about what they learned from the trauma. In the final session, they will summarize what they have learned in therapy. The individual may also desire to take part in a farewell ritual to help them symbolically shut the door on that chapter of their life.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
Very different from the other forms of therapy that spotlight ones emotions and reactions to a traumatic experience, this focuses only on the memory of the event itself. The underlying principle is that some people have a difficult time transitioning past their trauma due to it never properly processing in their brain. Their therapist will guide them in a series of eye movements. Hand taps, buzzers, or lights might also be used while the individual is asked to briefly think about their trauma.
Now these listed above are the therapeutic methods of help but there are many ways to receive help for overcoming traumatic experiences. Doctors may prescribe medication to treat the symptoms associated with suffering a traumatic experience. The individual may prefer therapy over medication or vice versa. Many use both forms of treatment to overcome their experienced trauma. If one is unable to afford to pay for therapy they can check within their local community to see what options are available for them at low to no cost to them.
I do hope the information listed above is useful to you all and may go on to help many of you to overcome any trauma experienced in any of your lives.This topic was picked by an active participant in the forum and I would like to take this time to thank them and all of you for your continued contributions to the forum. We love and appreciate all of you no matter what you are struggling with. I will ask these three questions of you:
How are you feeling today?
Have you sought or do you plan to seek help to overcome past and/or current trauma and if so which form of treatment would you or have you considered seeking?
What general topics would you like to see me use for next weeks check-ins?
As always I would like to wish you all a better today than yesterday in hopes of a brighter and more beautiful tomorrow!

How are you feeling today?
bad. memories keep flashing before my eyes and echoes of the dialogue haunt me. but am trying my best to ignore them. Ignore the unfairness and wrongful judgment that has been done to me.
Have you sought or do you plan to seek help to overcome past and/or current trauma and if so which form of treatment would you or have you considered seeking?
i would like to. have to save up though.
What general topics would you like to see me use for next weeks check-ins?
@quietBirch191
It is so hard sometimes to silence those voices. I finally got to the point I fought them. I would think of all those in my life who were positive influences and it was like those voices outweighed the negative ones over time. It was only through therapy that I was able to overcome them. Now the only voice I ever hear is my own. This took a long time and I find it is best not to force results as this may cause symptoms to return unexpectedly. I do hope you get there my friend. The treatment I sought did not cost me anything since I went to the hospital to seek it. They did MRI's bloodwork and ultimately sent me to a mental health facility where I participated in group therapy everyday. After ten days of doing this I was released with an insomnia diagnosis and a new outlook on life in general. Again I will say one day at a time and may today be better than the one before.
@Understandingempath
@Understandingempath wow thank you so much! I'll look into that.

What general topics would you like to see me use for next weeks check-ins?
I dont know, it doesnt depend on my opinion anyway what youre going to write about next
@emylly
So glad you are feeling a little better today! Little steps are still progress!

@emylly
Your opinion matters always my friend. I do use these suggestions to pick a topic because I want you all to know your voices are heard here. My goal ultimately is to empower you all so you can gather the strength to overcome all of your struggles. As a listener there is only so much I can do towards this aim. I am glad to hear you are seeking therapy because it is hard to lose our loved ones no matter how they may have treated us. I too was bullied in school to the point I was beaten unconscious for defending someone with a speech impediment. This world can be harsh at times but there must be balance which means there is good in this world as well. As such I try my best everyday to focus on the good and how to spread hope to others who may not see the light in the world. I am glad you are feeling a little better and I hope this carries over into tomorrow.
@Understandingempath
thank you..you are a very good and kind person
Today has been a little bit of contentment and there have been trigger moments that have caused anxiety too. My counsellor wants me to go to group therapy to help me work through 10 years of sexual, physical and emotional abuse as well as severe neglect from my childhood - something I didn't talk about after my court case for 20years and once my mum passed away came and bit me on the backside.
What are your thoughts on group therapy? I'm scared and it feels so demoralising but I really want to heal.
@Fleggles
Group therapy seemed scary to me at first. Once I was in that setting I realized everyone was scared to open up and speak. So I was faced with either sitting in a quiet room full of people for an hour or to open my mouth and start telling my story. I ended up being the voice that opened the mouths of the rest of the group. I will never regret my decision as it ultimately brought me back to where I am today. I wouldn't have the determination and integrity I have developed without the group therapy. That treatment empowered me and showed me I can have a positive influence on others. I too was in court testifying against my abuser over twenty years ago and that is tough on a child. I have made a post about it on here but the words can not describe how I felt in that courtroom. The abuse did not stop there but only changed into emotional abuse. That too was overcome in therapy which is why I am very supportive of group therapy. It helps to have supportive people there for us especially when we seek validation and empathy from others. If you ever desire a listener I am here as well as many other wonderful listeners who occasionally listen to me at times. I do hope your day gets brighter my friend.
Hugs to those who want them.
@Understandingempath Hi I am doing good today. I started therapy sometime 30 years ago,when the therapist realised that she didn't know enough about PTSD and suddenly ended it. At the time I was unable to find another therapist for that problem. I read a CBT book and started doing CBT on my own. It did help me with nightmares,but I continued to have a hard time with flashbacks. About 4 years ag o I found a therapist with trauma experiance. I did EMDR and some PE therapy and was helped a lot.
@adventurousBranch3786
I am glad to hear that you are having a good day! ^_^
@adventurousBranch3786
I am glad today is a good one for you my friend. I am also glad to hear you found treatment that works for you. Sometimes we take a trial and error approach to find that process which fits all of our needs. For myself I was afraid to drop my armor to open up but knew that eventually thats exactly what I would have to do to find closure. Again may today be better than yesterday in hopes of a brighter tomorrown.
@Understandingempath
Morning everyone <3 also idk if it's customary on this site, but in case anyone's reading through the comments, I'm putting a trigger warning here for what's below: sexual assault, death, death threats, nightmares, psychosis, child sexual assault.
How are you feeling today?
Not great. My aunt died yesterday evening and it was the first time I've ever seen someone's dead body, albeit over zoom. It feels so weird calling her a dead body though... Like I saw it, but I couldn't believe she wasn't still in there somewhere. It was weird. And then during the night I dreamed that I was sexually assaulted by my other aunt, her sister. My mom is coming over to visit me today and I really don't want to talk about it but I'm afraid I'll have to. Keeping in mind this was a really weird dream and my still-living aunt has never done anything even vaguely like that to me, ever. No touching, no talking about that kind of thing to me, nothing. I haven't seen her in years. I don't know why I'd have that kind of dream, but I have been having weird dreams lately. Usually they involve my former friend who went off his meds (for some reason?) and threatened to kill all my friends and me at university. Also I'm sorry this is a lot of info at once but it's been months and I think maybe this is just the time when everything is coming out.
Have you sought or do you plan to seek help to overcome past and/or current trauma and if so which form of treatment would you or have you considered seeking?
I have in the past, at my mom's urging, but not for a while now. I've tried talk therapy and EMDR mostly, and to be honest I don't actually remember if it helped or not (my family says it did). I could try that again, I suppose. I think I'd also want to do some group therapy with my friends in university, but I'd have to make sure they're all up for that idea too. I know yoga therapy has really helped in the past too, maybe I could try that again.
What general topics would you like to see me use for next weeks check-ins?
Seeing as this is basically my first day here, I don't know what has already been done, but maybe "inherited" trauma? Is that a thing? One of my parents is a CSA survivor, and while I am not (thank goodness) we both notice that I have some traits of CSA survivors, and I'm wondering where those come from.
Hope y'all are doing okay :)
@Chavelita119
Intergenerational Trauma is what you were trying to describe. That was Monday the 18ths topic I encourage you to check it out. I am sorry to hear about these vivid dreams you have been having. Dreams can be very odd indeed. Its also wonderful to have supportive friends in place to cope with past trauma. Above all I would like to extend my condolences for your aunts passing. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through. If you ever seek a listening ear I am here as are many other compassionate and empathetic listeners.
@Understandingempath
Thank you for the comprehensive list of therapy methods! There are lots of methods out there that I didn't know about.
How are you feeling today?
Pretty alright overall. I was a nice day with nice weather.
Have you sought or do you plan to seek help to overcome past and/or current trauma and if so which form of treatment would you or have you considered seeking?
People on here keep encouraging me to go seek professional help for my trauma related memory problems. But I honestly have no idea how anyone would treat that. My memory whipes itself out whenever I try to get to the roots of my trauma. So working on the source isn't going to work for that. I'm genuinely curious how it could be treated.
What general topics would you like to see me use for next weeks check-ins?
Attitudes, stigma, coping, support, outlets and lesser known symptoms are always good options.
@Soe22
Have you ever thought about trying hypnosis? I have considered it myself at times to see what is hiding in my subconscious. I want to thank you for all the ideas for topics you provided I will use symptoms of trauma for one of next weeks checkins. Also I am glad you are feeling alright today, it has been raining lightly all day where I am but I still consider it beautiful weather.
@Understandingempath
I have considered it, but the thought of it is super scary to me, so I probably wouldn't take that route unless I was strongly encouraged by a professional.
Also you're welcome. Hope the sky clears up where you live soon.
How are you feeling today?
I am feeling pretty good. I had a fitful night of sleep with stress dreams about my trauma. I also was very foggy headed today-- I would sing songs I have memorized and not be able to recall lyrics unless I really, really focused. I made some tea and took a cool shower and that seemed to help jump start me to get on 7cups. :)
Have you sought or do you plan to seek help to overcome past and/or current trauma and if so which form of treatment would you or have you considered seeking?
I have sought CBT in the past. Unfortunately, the only reason I was able to get therapy then was because I had low-income health insurance provided by my state. Now that I work freelance, I'm no longer elligible for that insurance, and I don't know how to seek therapy that I can afford now. My jobs offer health insurance, but I can't keep getting new therapists for my trauma every couple of months when my jobs end-- I have trust issues as it is. I can't afford 7cups' services, and I'm not sure how to proceed when I don't make a lot of money...
What general topics would you like to see me use for next weeks check-ins?
Do you have anything on being alone when you have trauma? I struggle giving my introverted boyfriend his recharge space, because my trauma causes me to be very contact-heavy. I've gotten much better than I used to be, but I still wish I knew how to be less co-dependent...
@betterchoices
Sorry to hear about your negative dreams my friend. The only way I was able to seek the treatment I needed was through insurance as well but I have heard there are resources available. I recommend trying SAMHSA to see what resources are available in your community. It is understandable to be reluctant to trust others when dealing with past trauma and I could not imagine the struggle you go through daily. I will say that I am here for you as are many other outstanding listeners if you ever need our compassionate ears. I will use your suggestions in a future check-in to which I thank you so much for your participation and input on this thread. I do hope you sleep soundly tonight.
@Understandingempath Thank you for your thoughtful and empathetic response
I checked out SAMHSA and a lot of things in my area seem to be unavailable-- but I've been looking into private practices that I can pay for out-of-pocket. :)
