Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in Thursday 3rd August 2017

Greetings all!

It's Mellio and I here today. Recently we had a conversation about this journey we're on.. the one that in the aftermath of trauma we find ourselves on...the one we share in common here. Can be called healing or recovery, and we likened it to a marathon. Have you ever run a marathon, have you ever wanted to run a marathon, maybe you are on one now.

In wise words from Mellio :"The effort to keep moving is unbelievable. Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, so you have to pace yourself. We are so conditioned to sacrifice or punish ourselves at the expense of our wellbeing that it can be hard to be patient and mindful of our limits.Its like physio - rebuilding physical trauma has to be done at an incremental pace otherwise you risk reinjuring yourself. The 'perfectionist inner critic' wants us to move at a sprinter's pace.Which is doomed to failure and disappointment. Which again feeds into deeply ingrained patterns. A key may be to test your mind and body and respect your limits, as you push them."

As is with a marathon we can train, have a coach, and a crew of supporters on the sideline cheering us on and picking us up when we stumble, encouraging us to go on.Some days keeping going means just keep breathing.

"Just remember - if you think you are moving slower than you should, then you are moving at the right pace. This is a marathon, not a sprint."

How are you doing today? What's your pace like? What helps you to keep moving? Any tips on running this marathon? There is a crew here with a lot of experience and resources amongst us. We are here with you in this safe place. Luv Mellio and Rozie

I'm... recovering today. I shared one of my stories about the torture and abuse I endured through my childhood to a listener. It was hard. Very hard. My pace is slow. I think my marathon will not be completed for at least 30 years. I'm still trying to figure things out myself, but a tip I have is, be careful and take it slow. Don't push yourself too hard or else it might set you back in progress. I could use a few tips if anyone has any cheeky

@rozie I'm walking today. I'm still sick and finally my doctor prescribed antibiotics but that means tons of rest is necessary. I'm not exactly thrilled, but it's necessary. I know my brother is going to call me fat and lazy because of it, and I know my mother is going to think I'm slacking off, but my health is more important. Even though those words might hurt, I know they aren't true.

@rozie Thanks for incorporating my thoughts into the check in, rozie. A good reminder, especially for me today, as thoughts race. Triggering nightmares last night have started today off on a sour note. Managing emotional flashbacks seems to be what's for breakfast. 🙃

At least I had some oatmeal with mine. Can you get some food down too? Maybe it'll help stifle the flashbacks. Probably not, but I need some optimism today 🙃

Haven't even been at work for an hour yet and there's already computer problems and there was already a referral on my desk and I'm kinda already done 🤦🏼‍♀️

@BeeLeigh

The referral that was on my desk when I came in had been sent over a half hour before I came in. The person who printed it out and put it on my desk never sent the text out to our community representatives to let them know about it. So a different company got the referral. And now the administrator is mad at both of us 😒

I'm doing OK. Rough session yesterday and I unplugged afterwards. Broken sleep, yet I feel OK right now.

It might me coming close to the end of my journey into healing this time around. EMDR is making it jack rabbit pace. There is a little sadness about that because it means saying goodbye to my therapist (She said the average is 8-12 sessions) and most likely 7cups as well in time. There is also some fear because it seems almost too fast this time and when things that weren't bothering me were spoken outloud in session, they did had some difficult emotions still attached.

Getting ready to play with clay, I can't practice harp because I cut my thumb yesterday.

I'm a lil slow today too , I thought I was making some progress talking to my therapist and taken to art as my means of expression. But yesterday something really weird happeend my eyes went blurry. I was light headed not sleepy not dizzy .. I'm.not a diabetic maybe v sleep deprived and have two small kids under 4, was so scared.. just had some sugar and it passed off. May be just the heat I dunno.

I can't really talk to anyone yet... Maybe I'm just over reacting to everything.. some days I still question. Should I just leave the past as it is and move on, I have been doing it all.these years , but it eats me . I'm so tired v tired . Talked to someone v close not about my abuse , but just general anxiety stuff and they told me I shouldn't be so defensive or angry .. how do I explain that some days I'm the only one who can protect me.

@energeticPenny8

It's okay to be a lil slow today or any day. ..it's at your pace...as we say it's a marathon and not a sprint. Others often can't understand what it's like, what you are going through and that can make it harder when you are misunderstood and told to stop being defensive or angry, as you said.So support from those who do know helps alot and a safe place to come to.

Hoping you are alot better now... maybe fatigue or heat...be kind to yourself. X

I'm in for the blanket fort. When I have bad days I'm sensitive to light and sound.

Today I am trying desperately to find my pace. Things are taking off at rocket speed with this new man I met. I am really into him, but at the same time I am scared because I barely know him and I am afraid he has mal-intentions for me or that I will get hurt. I am trying to slow it down, but I am also trying not to push away affection because I do tend to do that and I know I have an affection deficit. So today is difficult, trying to find what it is I need. To make matters more complicated, we are far apart right now and we are only conversing over text.

@singercrystalspirit

Oh I do hope you can find your pace and the balance between going too fast for you and you pushing away affection. And maybe pace is the key... going as slowly as you need to feel safe and build trust... know it's hard to do when a relationship is new. .. but then you may be more comfortable with affection. x

Thank you! I'm trying so hard! It's a bit of push and pull, but hopefully it's not too extreme.
