Yes, EMDR is useful for people with PTSD and past trauma. I'm not sure how you would go about getting that treatment though.
@Sanu83 Hi in my case EDMR helped me a lot. I still get flashbacks but I am able to tolerate them better,
@Sanu83 It's controversial, partly because EMDR was originally invented for PTSD resulting from a specific, identified, traumatic incident. So there's some disagreement about how to use it for CPTSD, if there's no single incident to focus on.
Also, EMDR was originally invented as a way to incorporate repetitive eye movements into trauma treatment. The "EM" stands for eye movement. But these days people use the term EMDR for a variety of distraction techniques that have nothing to do with eye movements.
Personally, I've not come across anyone (either in real life or on the Internet) who has recovered from CPTSD, and who says their recovery was due to EMDR. Plenty of people have recovered from simple PTSD following EMDR using actual eye movement, however.
So there are plenty of people who will say that EMDR was helpful, but often they don't specify whether it helped them recover from complex PTSD. And often they don't specify whether the EMDR involved actual eye movement.
Another difficulty is that people who have completely recovered are mostly busy living their lives, and not many of them are to be found in Internet forums. Mostly, the people in forums have not completely recovered. This makes it difficult to find people who have recovered and who can tell you how they did it.
Some research findings suggest that finding a really good therapist who fully understands you is more important than what techniques the therapist uses.
