@Oxymoron6demon I'm not sure what you're referring to, can you point out a specific area on the site where you see this?

Some of the subcommunities have a therapist on the team, maybe that's what you mean? It's therapists who have accounts on 7cups who decide to join one of the subcommunity teams. I don't know much about the therapist access of the site, there was mention at one time about an area for them, no idea if that's still happening.

@Oxymoron6demon I don't think the teen side has that room, so you have to wait until you're 18.

@tazzie

What does it mean when a listener is listed as a "peer support listener"?

Does that mean they are supporters of other listeners or are peer to peer support for the person who chats with them?

Thanks

@BookWomanOfFahrenheit45

A peer support is a listener who lends support to the listener community.

@Tazzie

Thank you for the clarification.

Is there any specific sub or community of 7 cups that geared towards peer to peer listening other that how the all the sub communities are laid out?

@BookWomanOfFahrenheit451 On the Browse Listeners page, the checkbox with the label "Peer Support Listeners" finds listeners who can provide peer support for members.

I believe this means the listener has declared in their settings that they have direct lived experience of one or more issues, but you don't care which issues they are. There are also peer support badges that show a listener has completed training in various aspects of peer support. The Peer Pro badge indicates a listener who has completed all the training.

The "Listener Must Have Lived Experience" checkbox seems to be for when you want to specify the issue.

For example I have direct lived experience, I have the Peer Pro badge, and you can find me in Browse Listeners when the Peer Support Listeners checkbox is checked.

Unfortunately there is an unrelated badge called Peer Support. It's for listeners who provide support to fellow listeners. This is very confusing!

@RarelyCharlie

Thank you for your response!!

For the listeners who have "lived experience" it is not a peer to peer support chat though is it? It just means they have experience in the type of things you are experiencing (which is great).

I was originally asking if there is a mechanism set up for users to find a person who is not so much in a listener position but is in a peer to peer support, meaning you both are listeners to each other.

@BookWomanOfFahrenheit451 Ah yes, that's a good point.

7 Cups doesn't officially have peer support chats in that sense. Listeners who need support are supposed to use their member accounts, but then they can't chat to other members privately, only in the forum and chatrooms. But if you establish a relationship with a listener and you have shared experience, then over time I imagine you would become listeners to each other.

@RarelyCharlie

And the best way to establish a "relationship" with a listener?

@BookWomanOfFahrenheit451 I don't think there's a formula for relationships, and everyone is different.

In my limited experience some chats lead to follow-up chats, and some of those lead to regular follow-ups, and then sometimes it gradually comes to feel more like a relationship.

@DangerMaus If you open that chat and click on the star icon, that should bring up the rating box. If you reviewed them recently though, it won't be there (I think it's 48 hours).

@Jill7Cups

So earlier I was in a chat room and someone was told to refrain from speaking in all caps because it was triggering to some. So I guess its easy enough to refrain from doing that, but in my mind, this guidline or rule is confusing and it makes members feel like they are being "nannied". Of course, we want to have a safe community, but sometimes policy can miss the mark.

So why are we being told that using all caps can be a trigger? I actually did some research and I didn't any psychology papers that even discussed this.I need see a lot information that suggestion that using all caps can be seen as shouting and therefore is rude and just bad manners. Okay, so it's rude.But should we call something possible rude a "trigger".

As someome with a trauma background, I feel that some will say they are triggered when they really mean they are experiencing discomfort. And so, last time I checked, feeling discomfort does not give someone flashbacks.It's part of everyday life and people have to learn how to navigate these feelings.

So, here's my proposal- let's not use clinical language, originally used for the trauma survivors, for behaviors that just annoy us. There's a difference here.

There is plenty of content in chat rooms and forums that can potentially trigger anyone. At the end of the day, its up to that person to handle their own feelings. And so, that why some of these nanny-like rules can limit personal growth in this community.

@DangerMaus Jill resigned in November 2019. See: News from Jill: my next chapter

I agree with you. Using a term like "triggering" out of context is unprofessional, and I would say it's a breach of the various rules about being professional in our Community Guidelines.

What is the Member community room and how do I get there?

1 reply
User Profile: TortueDesBois
TortueDesBois June 27th, 2020

@Oxymoron6demon hey there! The member community room is the adult equivalent of the teen community room 24/7 (different name for the same room and purpose) and is a space where you can just chit-chat in live with other members, having light chat, to help to build our community. you would need Chief Chat and Honest Voice badges, which you have, so normally you should see the teen community room 24/7 either in the top "chat" menu, under "group chatrooms" or in your conversation list under the tab "Group Chat". I hope it helps.

@honestNectarine3889 Go to the community you want to join. There's a "Join This Community" button near the top.

Is this the kind of answer you were hoping for? Or were you trying to ask a different question?

Is the chat live or do you get return messages whenever?

@jcrobin Group chats are live. Chatting with a listener can be live or offline. If you pay to chat with a therapist those are generally offline although I suppose it's possible some may meet at a certain time to have live chats.

@AffyAvo How do you know which one you picked? & Thanks!

@jcrobin For the listeners? If you send out a general request ie. the Connect Now option, I think it's fair to assume that will be a live chat until either the member or listener states otherwise. There used to be an option for offline requests @RarelyCharlie mentioned something about them recently, I don't know how that's done though.

If your selectr your own listener, I think it's also reasonable to expect the chat to be live if the listener has their status set to online.

If a listener has their status set to busy or offline, then the chat is likely going to be offline, although there are instances where they do respond right away.

If a listener has their status set to online, a Chat Now button is on their profile and there's a green circle by their picture when browsing listeners. Busy and Offline show a Leave Message button and there's a orange circle or red circle by their name when browsing listeners. Profile pages also have a coloured circle around the profile picture to designate status, but I can barely make them out, they used to be thicker and easier to see. It looks like Blue, Orange and Blue to me for Online, Busy and Offline, respectively.

@hopefullyitsgonnabeok Hi Ellie!

This thread is obsolete! Please do not ask questions here! Instead, if you have questions about listening, I suggest you ask in Questions and Discussions or ask a mentor.

But since you asked, yes, following up any chat to see how it goes for the member is generally considered a good thing to do, and there are badges for repeat chats with the same members.
