@RunningMachine

It can be hard for the body to adjust to different sleep routines. What helps you to get through the day when you sleep very little?

@amiablePeace77

After a night shift I sleep when I get home, from 6 until 9:30 - 10:30. Have some time to myself gym, lunch etc then lay down to rest from 15:00 - 19:00, sometimes just dosing here and there and occasionally actually getting an HR or two extra sleep. Physically unusual cope fine but as the 8 shifts progress I do feel increasingly jaded and frustratingly my eyes get more tired making reading difficult.

Nights off can be a good solid 8-10 hrs in either 1st or 2nd night off and then 4-5 hrs from 4 am onwards. I have had rotations where I sleep well every night off and equally to rotations when I don't get any long sleeps. To cope I just make the time to sleep whenever my body lets me.

Historically it's been the same since my teens, usually short 3.5 - 4.5 hr periods occasionally more than 1 at a time but not often.

Psychologically I get frustrated by it but accept it, my mind simply won't cut off again after one period, more often than not it is for any apparent or specific  reason. I accept my current role as frustratingly repetitive as it is, does help me as it is constant movement, keeps me physically fit and very little anxiety. I would go absolutely stir crazy if I went back to a sit down career again so just accept it and get on with it. On the bonus side, I've been working with a core number of colleagues for a few years now which is positive, they haven't strangled me yet for my toneless singing and do have a giggle at my dancing and occasionally join in 😁😁😁

I haven't been sleeping much lately, my schedule is hard to dictate so I never have a set routine and sometimes I am so stressed, I keep waking up throughout the night and find it hard to get back to sleep 🤗🩵

It's rough when you can't sleep through!  Stress, but also certain foods (high in sugar), can make us wake up during the night.

Ouch. Not being able to have a set routine can make sleep all so much more difficult.

How are you sleeping?

Most nights I get between 5 to 6 hours, broken, never right through the night.

Are you sleeping more or less than usual?

I use to sleep 6 to 8 hours nightly, but the past 2 years have been rough. My anxiety just killed my seep pattern.

How is the quality of your sleep?

Terrible, never right through the night, wake anytime after 2 AM and have such a hard time to stop my thoughts and fall back right away.

@QuietByNature

Anxiety can indeed have a significant impact on sleep patterns and impact our well-being in many ways. Something I found quite helpful is relaxing the body before sleep time with progressive muscle relaxation techniques and using meditations to help with racing thoughts

@amiablePeace77

I'll take a look at the muscle relaxation but as for meditation,  I find it do not have the patience to sit long enough (ADHA will not allow me to)

@QuietByNature

I don't have the patience for long meditations. And I don't think that they are necessary, because things like single breath meditations really helped me. Maybe there's one out there that suits you?

How are you sleeping? Are you sleeping more or less than usual? How is the quality of your sleep?

Sometimes I sleep well but it’s not every night. While there are nights where I’m getting the right amount of sleep, I’m feeling like most nights that’s not how it is. As for quality of sleep, it’s 50/50 whereas some mornings I wake up feeling fully rested, energized and recharged and some mornings I wake up feeling the complete opposite of that.

It's hard when you do not get the sleep you need. I'm glad, though, that there are times you do and hope those days will increase in future!

Ha, lifelong insomniac so if it's a dreamless sleep, it's much nicer. If I have bad dreams, I don't really want to go back to sleep after those because it's so realistic.

I'm happy if I get a chunk of a few hours, at least my body gets to rest and heal

@Empathicwhisper

Sorry to hear that you're not sleeping well. Having too much on our mind can disrupt our sleep. Sometimes it’s good to just take a pen and write down your thoughts about the problems and feelings you have or talk to someone about it—just to get it out of your system.

It sounds like going from one extreme to the other. I can only imagine how rough it must be to do your daily tasks with that little amount of sleep! Have you considered checking in with your doctor?

2 replies

@amiablePeace77 I would love checking in wit my doctor but due to my being homeless and at this point a great distance away its not even possible for me to see him or any of my doctors. Its going on 3 years now since I have been able to see them. I think this in a nutshell is why I am having some of the issues I bring here to the forum

It must be hard to go on for such a long time knowing that you need to see a doctor. I'm glad that you come here to talk but hope there will be an opportunity soon for you to get medical attention.

It can be difficult to fall asleep when it's not quiet. Using earplugs for sleeping helps some people.

They can be pricey, but they might also help a lot. Maybe check if there are any discounted ones online ?
