Sleeplessness

I can literally feel tired and my thoughts, my mind, can talk me out of going to sleep. Its a weird thing.

My sleep has been terrible a while now. It truly is like my body has forgotten what its like to be calm.

@nicmidnight

 I understand this feeling. Your mind will not let you rest. To rest your mind, your mind has to feel safe somehow rather than watching out for the next danger. I wonder how this safety can be created?

@CalmRosebud I certainly wish I knew. The hypervigiliance has been there since childhood but got worse after my trauma at 25. Nearly 20 years later its still there.

@nicmidnight

Several people here have posted some ideas.

I wonder if there was a time in your past when you did feel comfortable, safe and sleepy. Sometimes, for me, remembering such a time and writing it down and then reading it before I try to go to sleep, helps me to relax my mind. I try to tell myself that nothing else matters besides this comfortable, safe and sleepy feeling and I say to myself, “Tonight, I will have a good night sleep.”

Your mileage may vary.

I liked some of the other suggestions and ideas on this thread as well, and might try some of them myself!

@nicmidnight I have this often. The only solution that has worked for me so far is listening to a podcast to take my mind off things. Music sometimes works but podcasts tend to hold my mind better. I'm on the waiting list for therapy though, and I hope that will help.

I really hope you are able to find something that helps <3

I took have been seriously struggling with lack of sleep. 3 to 4 hours a night at most and even with that im up every 45min to an hour. Some new things I tried over the last 2 days, didnt fix the lack of sleep but I would say it deffinetly helped the quality of sleep. May be worth looking into for yourself.

So a few things I changed where,

  1. New blanket got a weighted blanket, (undoubtedly my favorite change i would have never thought of this on my own)

  2. Changed all my fabreeze air fresheners to there "relaxed" sent (basically lavender and some other sent)

  3. Got a defuser with an oil that is supposed to aid and promote good sleep.

  4. Got a sleep aid pillow and fabric spray that gets sprayed on pillow and blankets just before sleep.

  5. I got some sleep gummies to take an hour b4 bed.

Between all these things like I said it did not help me get that 8 hours of sleep ive been longing for for months now, but the little sleep I did get was probably some of the best sleep ive had in literal months. Just a suggestion. Hope you find something that helps soon, I know all to well how that feels. ð«©

@nicmidnight Your mind is racing because you’ve been handling a lot. 🌙 You can retrain your body to rest.

Try this:

  • Breathe deep, slow, and steady. In… out… repeat.

  • Write down your worries; let them go on paper.

  • Dim lights, unplug, and let your body know it’s safe to relax.

Remember: calm takes practice, but you can get there. Your body just needs to remember it’s okay to rest. 💫
