Expressing anger?

I feel anger is one of the most misjudged emotions… a lot of times it’s not anger that people feel but a number of other suppressed emotions that eventually turn to anger … or at least that is what I feel for myself … im not a angry person.. not for others at least…. more often than not it’s just myself who I find hard to forgive …

but idk though… how does one express anger? are there any safe or healthy ways to do so?

it’s one of the emotions I don’t know how to process or express I think … like it’s just hard and overwhelming and I’d rather shut down and isolate than do something about it.. even if it’s internally suffocating… 🥲

how do you feel about anger as an emotion? how do you express it usually?

I think you are right that anger is a thing that builds up and often see someone explode.

I feel it is important to vent and share even minor things to not let the pressure build. It can feel uncomfortable but speaking up and being honest and upfront can help.  Most things can be worked out before anger erupts.

Example: explain why a particular thing irritates you.... my spouse has hearing issue wears a hearing aids at work and out in public..... but takes them off at home .....so after Repeating myself several times becoming very angry ... I spoke up and asked "why am I NOT important enough for you to wear hearing device when it is just us?"

It did not occur to them I found this practice disrespectful.....instead they just thought i was not very empathetic to their hearing issue........ people can not see your view of a situation unless you speak up.

when anger is already there some use it as motivation in exercise or journal etc liek a pressure relief valve.

@Optimisticempath

It's a normal and healthy emotion that needs to be diffused in a healthy outlet!

I box.

Dance.

Break plates, don't worry, in a safe environment 😁💜

@Amanda84 growing up I’ve not seen healthy expressions of this emotion … mostly all v scary ways .. … so it has always felt a scary one to even feel .. :( took me forever to realise it was normal and there can be healthy ways too… so now me thinks im only trying to learn 🥺

boxing and dancing and breaking plates sound fun to me haha… like putting all that built up anger or energy into something that is emotionally satisfying too 😍

can I throw steel or those unbreakable material plates lol xD im broke and can’t afford breaking plates for real 😭

you are so nice to me always Amanda!! I like seeing you here 💕💕

Ha, I just throw a few plates I got cheap in charity shops 😁 You should try the dancing or boxing or something strenuous that just allows you to destress and get rid of the tension. You are most welcome, I am glad if it helps 🥰

Loving this topic 😍 I agree lot of our suppressed emotions turn into anger.

love expressing anger by punching pillows or pushing a wall with both hands. Feeling the feelings... The frustration of not being able to move the wall inspite of all that effort. Then letting it drop.

I need to do this practice more often (sometimes I skip lol).

Thanks for such a wonderful topic 🌱😇

@Optimisticempath I was listening to Ted Talks about anger, and one author stated that sometimes we are angry at something because of what we tell ourselves. This story we tell ourselves may not be true. Another person stated that anger may be telling us that our boundaries or values may have been crossed. Another mentioned that anger is human and that it’s important to show compassion on one’s self when angry. Overall, I gathered that anger is an important emotion that sometimes people are scared to talk about. I think your feelings are legitimate and maybe you too can show compassion on yourself. I’m learning more about anger. I encourage you too to learn more about it and your own anger.

@Optimisticempath I handle mine the same way. Suppressed emotions to try and keep the peace till it bursts. It's not easy to find something that works but I'm trying through self reflection and just trying to be aware...still a struggle.

Anger is not bad if its done or used for the right reason

Hey, I get you! It is difficult to manage anger and the guilt that comes after it when you are not an angry person. I feel we often feel angry when we reach a point where we can not let anyone do us wrong. For eg, someone has wronged you. You may not feel angry at them. You may feel that you could be treated like that. The very self you protect. It may not come out right away, but that frustration may build up.

If you are looking for a healthy way to let that pent-up go. I think you can try journaling. Or imagine your older self sitting on the seat facing you. Tell them how you feel and why. How could you avoid the hurt? Forgive yourself.

Hope this helps.

I usually look at the cause of my anger. And if its due to some injustice I show myself compassion. And the anger kind of diffuses with the love I give myself.

Sometimes though I realise that even though there is an injustice happening against me, there is some point being made by the other side too, which broadens my understanding, and allows me to tackle future situations with better skills and more patience.

@Optimisticempath Thanks for this post, I think this is very valuable to discuss and I totally agree it's one of the most misjudged emotions! 🌻

I used to push down anger so fast that I didn't even know I experienced it! I had separated myself from it, due to a misbelief that anger was 'bad'/unsafe. So I can understand being on the journey of learning how to process this emotion. Some things that have helped me are to realize that anger is not bad, and just because some people can be unsafe in their expressions of anger doesn't mean that anger itself is unsafe - it is a natural emotion that helps let us know when our boundaries have been crossed or something unjust has occurred. It can protect us, when we hear it and (when appropriate) speak on behalf of it (and we can do this with love and truth, from a centered place). My general process with anger now is to acknowledge and validate it - sometimes giving the angry part of me self-compassion is all I need to feel better. Sometimes I also release all the energy safely through my body (sometimes I literally just shake it out, or walk, or do air punches). Talking about it with someone trusted can also help. If it doesn't settle, sometimes that is an indicator to me that I need to go to the person I am feeling angry with, to kindly share with them how I'm feeling (if it's safe to do so). If they respond well, I feel better and our relationship can be strengthened; if they respond poorly, I have gained important information about whether they are a safe person for me and can think about what boundaries I might need to protect my heart/self 🌞
