Hi everyone,
I just recently joined a professional group in Hawaii because of my studies. I've just been meeting people there so the fires hit me and put me in a little shock. Please say a prayer for the animals and people on Maui, or just think about them with a moment of quiet.

I'm so sorry for the tragedy that everyone has experienced there and for you all who are from there but not there now. It's so tragic. So much loss of life. So much history gone.
I'm not there either, but just made contacts there and then this shock. It seems so unbelievable.

Iʻm very far away. I just was so shocked by what happened. See, I just joined a professional org there. There was an event there this week on zoom. So Iʻve been emailing with people there and we had the zoon meeting. I donʻt even know the people well, but, wow!

@purpleTree4652 I have relatives in Maui also. There is no communication so I am extra anxious and stressed to find out how they are doing. Watching the news updates is making me extra-depressed.

I also found the Maui Emergency Management Agency. They are at https://www.mauicounty.gov/70/Emergency-Management-Agency and their number is tel: 808 270 7285.
Also at mauicounty.gov, there is a list of shelters they have opened for people. They donʻt list phone numbers, but they have to have phone numbers. If you call information, you can probably get phone numbers for each shelter.
I know that cell service was out on Maui, but some there have satellite phones. Many articles that I read say to contact the RedCross.
I understand that the news is stressing you out more. I watched the live broadcast when the Mayor and emergency officials were talking about the fires and recovery. Then I went to news sites and saw how some are twisting the information that was given by the people there who really know the facts. As soon as I saw information that was focusing on trying to sensationalize things, I stopped reading their supposed news. Civilbeat.org seems to have good info.

I have another resource for you. You should use this even though you aren't there. I received this info in an email because of my contacts with library associations in Hawaii.
"In a crisis like this, it’s also important to take care of your mental health. When people experience a disaster, they may be in shock and experience a wide range of emotions. The DOH is offering crisis mental health services and expanding hours to those experiencing emotional or psychological distress as a result of the Maui wildfires.
- To receive emergency services on Maui, contact DOH at (808) 984-2150 or via email at mauiwellness@doh.hawaii.gov or in person at 121 Mahalani Street in Wailuku. Clinic hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- DOH will have expanded clinic hours on August 12 and 13 to accommodate immediate needs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- The Hawaiʻi CARES crisis line is available 24/7 by calling 808-832-3100 or 1-800-753-6879, or calling, texting, or chatting 988."

This is a copy and paste of what I have been writing online. I am pasting it here as well as it may help you or others affected by this:
You don't understand how fast and severe this moved... and I completely understand your upset. Most people don't understand. Where I live, by Boulder Colorado, the EXACT SAME THING happened. No warning, record-breaking winds, unusual circumstances, etc. Here in Colorado it was our worst fire disaster on record. 1,084 homes destroyed, hundreds damaged, 1,000+ pets gone, by only 2 deaths. There was NO time to warn, NO time to grab any belongings, NO time to drive home to get the pets. The saving grace here was that most people were at work. Do an online search for "Marshall Fire, Boulder Colorado, December 2021". It was so bad that NO ASH was hardly even left! Just the foundations. It will probably come to light the no one did anything wrong... it is just a new weather event so to speak. One can not even put into words what it is like. Entire neighborhoods GONE... with ONE house, untouched, standing in the middle. It makes no sense. It is horror. Please know that this is so very different from anything seen before. I'm so sorry that your heart hurts from this... mine, too. I work for a structural engineer and we are STILL rebuilding those homes we lost and we are about to hit the 2-year mark. I can't even describe what it was and is like... but I tried to explain, so I hope it help some. Feel free to share my words... people need help in processing this and helping with understanding that the police, rescue, mayor and others need support and prayers and no judgement. They didn't do anything wrong. They really didn't. Look up our fire... it will help explain. 💔
