The situation of not being able to express how you feel program day 6

📅 Day 6: Setting Boundaries and Teaching Others

In the introductory post, we talked about a very painful truth: when you can't express how you feel, people often don't take you seriously, or they walk away. It hurts deeply when people interpret your silence as attitude, anger, or indifference.

Today is about reclaiming your power by teaching people how to treat you.

People cannot read your mind, but you can give them an instruction manual for your silence. When you are in a calm state (not during an argument), you can set a boundary.

You can say: "Sometimes I get overwhelmed and completely shut down. I'm not ignoring you, and I'm not mad at you. My brain just needs time to process. The best way you can support me is by giving me a little space, and knowing I will talk when I can."

🔍 Deep Dive Explanation

When we don't explain our silence, other people fill in the blanks with their own insecurities. They assume you are mad at them, which causes them to attack or withdraw. By explicitly naming your coping mechanism (the freeze response), you remove the misunderstanding and filter out the people who aren't willing to be patient with your healing.

❓ Reflection Questions for the Comments

Have people in your life ever misinterpreted your silence as being mean, distant, or uncaring? How did that feel?

• Draft a simple, one-sentence boundary you could text to a loved one to explain your need for quiet processing time.

We reached day 6! That's so amazing. Your support is amazing. Thank you a lot.

@cheerfulKiwi1776 Respectfully, can you please remove me from your taglists. I can't read your fonts because of my weak and my super sensitive eyes and it will give me a headache if I try.

No offence to you, we should all express ourselves colourfully but these posts aren't for me, with my limited eyesight :)

Thank you :)

Oooh, I'm straight up called out on this one.

It's kind of frustrating and anxiety-inducing to be misunderstood like that. Usually people would assume that I'm mad at them, and I have to figure out something to change that.

I usually say that it's not their fault and... Either I'm trying not to take something out on anyone, or don't worry about it right now. If someone knows me really well, they'll get it when I say "I don't. I just don't." I also have people used to my tourettes issues too, so it goes hand in hand. If those issues make me spout something off, when they ask, I just say "I'm sorry," and they generally know that it was involuntary.

@cheerfulKiwi1776

- ive been extremely silent the past two years in school. The result has been people either assuming Im extremely shy, or silently judging them. There are i admit circumstances that make the second assumption somewhat credible, but its not true and I wish noone would think that.

‐ "I'm not silent because of you, I'm silent because of me, and all I need is for us to just sit in that silence for a while"

All the time. Some take it personally. It makes me feel bad because it isn't meant to be personal.

Please be patient. I'm doing my best to work through things. It just takes me time.

I have had people think I'm distant because of how quiet I am about everything. I think it sometimes makes people frustrated and upset towards me because of it. It can just be hard to deal with sometimes.
