Is the glass half-full or half-empty?

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Is the glass half-full or half-empty?” It’s a popular concept when describing how people see the world and their experiences. This may seem like a pretty basic idea, but it stands for a much deeper perspective and the idea of having a certain mindset. The half-full or half-empty glass is, in its core, a metaphor. Imagine a glass filled exactly halfway with water. Regardless of who is looking at the glass, it has the same amount of water. What changes is how we interpret what we see.

When you look at the half-full glass, you’re looking at what is there and not what’s missing. You just pay attention to what you still “have”. This view is typically linked to gratitude, hope and resilience. It doesn’t mean denying struggles or acting like everything is fine, but deciding to pay attention to what is still present, even when life is hard.

Seeing the half-empty glass doesn’t necessarily equal negativity. Most of the time it can be the result of loss, disappointment, fatigue or hurt. When someone has had tough times, their mind may instinctively prioritize what’s not there, because they feel like they need whatever is missing in order to be okay. In many cases, this perspective is about survival and not attitude. This perspective is not fixed though. Whether people view the world as a half-full or a half-empty glass depends on their current emotional state, stress level and life experiences.

The glass also applies to confidence and insecurity. A lot of insecurities come from comparisons to others. You can think of this as seeing the glass as half-empty. Sometimes we feel insecure, or like we are not enough, because we are focused on what we believe we “lack”. Think of phrases like “I am not interesting enough”, or “I don’t look good”. It can help to shift your focus to the half-full part of the glass. This can be done by focusing on your strengths and the things that are uniquely you. Maybe you are kind and supportive, or perhaps you make others laugh.

Focusing on the positive impact we have on the world can help us feel more confident about ourselves. This is not the same as pretending you are flawless. You are not "erasing" imperfections. You are choosing to make peace with being yourself and recognizing that you don’t need to be perfect to be enough.

The empty half of the glass becomes too much to bear on hard days. On good days, aknowledging the full part may be easier. Instead of forcing ourselves to view the glass as half-full, a healthier approach might be to learn to hold both truths at once. Acknowledging what hurts or feels absent, while also recognizing what remains and what continues to support us, even in small ways.

In that sense the half-full, half-empty glass is not a test of positivity. It’s an opportunity to understand our own perspective better and to find strength in the things we have, especially when life feels heavy and we need it most.

Created together with @Ruben470, whose input and perspective I really appreciate! 🤍

We’re curious to know:

  • How do you see the glass in general, and how do you usually look at it when you’re struggling?

  • Do you think that it is possible to recognize the “empty” part of the glass, while also appreciating the “full” part?

  • Do you feel like the “full” part of the glass can help you overcome the “empty” part?

We’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts 🤍

  • How do you see the glass in general, and how do you usually look at it when you’re struggling?

for us we see it as haft full as even in the worst of times if  one looks they see tiny blessings when struggling which  been most our life we see it still as haft full as within the struggling  like a  caterpillar within the cocoon it take the struggling to get out to fill wings with strength  to be able to fly if someone helps as in breaking it out of the cocoon the butterfly will not be able to fly and will die we feel it kinda the same with people as in the struggle if another enable them they never gain the strength to truly  overcome things in life

so we see either one get better in the struggling or one become bitter and hateful

  • Do you think that it is possible to recognize the “empty” part of the glass, while also appreciating the “full” part?

yes as most the time that what we do as within all things all times there blessings sometime very very tiny other times very big but take each of us to see them as blessings too not just look at what bad but see the good even within the struggling and bad things within this world

  • Do you feel like the “full” part of the glass can help you overcome the “empty” part?

yes as the full part seeing the good in the world and even the good in suffering yes in life we have the haft empty most the time and the haft full but it in how one looks at it that in end matters the most also in how one acts within the good and bad times so yes we can even within the empty parts learn a lot use it to become better person more caring loving and even seeing the flaws within us so that we can accepted the flaws within others and within self even compassion  is rooted in that too

I used to see it as half full. Now, I kind of see it as just right. I guess it reflects on my current life, where I feel things are beginning to be more balanced. Yes, there can be more, things can keep getting better; I've had the worst of it already. Then, as more good things happen, more water will be added. When something negative happens, my water might evaporate and the level will lessen, but I believe that it wouldn't dry up entirely.

It could honestly be either way. But there was something I read that shared their experience with their professor. The professor asked the same thing as she held out said glass. Although she admitted that some may answer either way, she stated that no matter how you view it, you’ll eventually get tired for holding onto it for too long. Yes, we can see things either positively or negatively, but at the end of the day, it won’t change how much stress or exhaustion it may cause us.

@Bow64

I had two near fatal pulmonary embolisms in 2015 & 2017. Before I would of said half full, very positive and making the most of life but since it isn't just half empty but cracked and leaking away.

I tried being more positive, but the more I thought about it, truth felt best.

I think that there is an important point here. Forcing yourself to be positive can also backfire. It can create guilt "why am I not positive enough?". I think the truth is not something that we need to hide from or that we need to push away. I don't think everything in our lives has to be something positive. It is okay for something to just suck. I think it is wise to acknowledge the truth. Thank you for sharing your story with us! I appreciate that! I am glad to have you around with us! ❤️

Wise words, it is my reality and it is hard accepting it, scary even. Trying to be more 'present' isn't really helping because my risk will increase with age, being 'present' doesn't change it 😕

Wow, it has been over 2 months since we wrote this together... I still think about this post very often. The message behind it, I have applied it many times since. To me this post is very meaningful. Not just because of the message and how well it applies to me, but also because of what the post represents. It is something meaningful that I helped create together with a person that is meaningful to me.

To me this post is a reminder of an unexpected, but deeply appreciated friendship. A friendship that to this very day I am still very grateful for. So in one of my... let's say "reflective moments", I would like to thank you, @Bow64, Bowmblebee 🐝, for being who you are. Thanks to you, my glass has become a little more half-full. ❤️

HI, i really valued our interactions yesterday. I noticed in Bow's profile one of your roles is in Safety Patrol, i've been talkimg with Rebekah about applying, would you mind maybe talking with me about it.

Part of my backgound is in CRM packages in a contact centre environment, predomintly inhouse but some exposure to Salesforce and Oracle too. Most campaigns were phone, whitemail, email and web chat based.

I'd like to contribute.
