Things Homeschool Kids and Parents Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, please share insights you’ve learned while interacting with those who are, whether family, friends, or anyone else. Share things you’ve read, and ask if they’re true. Share beliefs that you have, ask questions, and more! This is a safe space where you can learn about things you’ve never experienced. <3

Let’s have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation among friends! As a song in one of the Land Before Time movies says, “It takes all sorts to make a world!” <3

I've actually been homeschooled for most of my life and to be honest I feel like it is often misunderstood. Not all homeschoolers are the same as some are homeschooled due to a lot of different reasons.

I feel like people automatically assume that homeschooled kids are isolated or socially awkward, but that isn't always true. Many homeschoolers take part in things such as sports or volunteering. At the same time there are some homeschool students that do struggle socially. I do actually struggle with this myself. It also just depends on the person not just the schooling itself.

In my experience, I've been asked questions if I even have friends or have had assumptions that homeschooling is somehow less serious or less real.

I was homeschooled in high school. Traditional school does not meet the needs for all kiddos and that is ok! There are pros and cons to it, but it was what I needed in that season of life.

Everyone experience is different, some parents are not involved much, like mine were, others are. Some get lots of social experience, some don't like me. Some spend excessive hours studying, some don't. Some follow a strict curriculum, others don't. Some are very grounded in faith, others are not. There can be a range of consistency in homeschooling. Feel free to ask questions!

I think my situation was very unique, and it might not follow the stereotypes of what you might see i media, and such. My favorite part was getting to choose classes. I was not limited to what a school offered, so I def took classes that were different and aligned with my interests. The hardest part for me was that I had to be accountable to myself, motivate myself, and teach myself the material.

When you say classes, do you mean textbooks or were you part of a co-op?

yes, i created my homeschool circulum myself, and so it was very hodgepodge. I would buy curriculum online, textbooks, just books in general, there were a few classes that I took with a professor. but most of it was just finding premade self pace courses, creating my own thing, or online classes.

So you were unschooled sorta? What would that be defined as?

i never heard that term before! i guess in a lot of ways yes. However, for like core classes I did follow a more strick curriculum and I had a class list. I guess to start it was probably more homeschooling then evolvued into unschooled. But i wouldnt say that I lacked a schooling, because I was still learning lots, and went onto college.

@jesusredeemedme2425 I was home school a few years when I was young. The only difference I remember was when I finally went to school I was a little left out because the other kids had some friends and I knew absolutely no one. I'd recommend if anyone does something similar don't home-school too long then have them join public school, or have them do home school the full way, but they still need friends to adjust.
