User Profile: Starmedia
Starmedia September 26th, 2020

Hello, Lovely Community! I hope everyone is doing well. heart

Today is the Day 3 of our Self-Care Event. (Check out this post for details on Self-Care Event). We will be discussing the different fundamental levels of Self-Care using a Pyramid Model inspired and modified from Abraham Maslow, Helen (One Life) and The Fabulous to understand the concept better and practice activities that can enhance our well-being.

Self-Care Pyramid

Self-care is all about creating a positive and healthy relationship with self inorder to take care of our well-being and happiness. Self-care practices are very personal and can be different for everyone.

Here is a Self-Care pyramid model having Levels 1-5 (Level One starts at the bottom of the pyramid) which can help us in understanding the fundamental levels of self-care to create a long term wellness for ourselves:

9c12Wjf.png

Level One: Focusing on Basic Needs

These are the Self-Care essentials at the base level which are crucial for our survival. Example: Food, Water, Air, Exercise, Sleep, Sunshine, Relaxation, Safety, Security etc.

Level Two: Developing one's personal power and control

These are extremely important practices which involve development and making use of our own power as well as developing a sense of control within ourselves. How this can be done is given below in order, from left to right.

Self-Awareness => Self-Exploration => Self-Understanding => Self-Love => Self-Transformation => Mastery of Ones Ego

Level 3: Building healthy and loving support system

This is all about creating beautiful loving connections and maintaining healthy boundaries with the ones who are important to us and are a part of our support system.

Level 4: Doing activities that enhances productivity,creativity and happiness

These involve all the productive, creative and happy activities that make us feel confident and meaningful. Example: Hobbies, practicing mindfulness/meditation, creating positive experiences, travelling, accomplishments, skill development etc.

Level 5: Involving in Short Term Pleasures

Short term pleasure can include holidays, enjoying the luxuries, playing games, shopping, having a makeover, personal grooming, decorating home etc.

Here are some simple examples of self-care practices:

? Solving a crossword or sudoku

? Spending time with family

? Practicing Mindfulness

? Doing activities you enjoy

? Making notes on what you love about yourself

? Breathing Exercises

? Looking at the sky/moon if you enjoy nature

? Taking a break from social media

? Relaxing

? Reading a good book or a newspaper

Awesome post, very appealing and insightful ?

Self care is indeed very important for everyone. Time and again we might feel that so much is happening around and it starts taking a toll on our health making us feel exhausted and drained out...at that time it's okay to accept that you need a break and definately take one and do something that you find soothing and comforting .

I like to take Naps XD ...the best self care !! Other than that journaling, listening to music, watching some movie/series, buzzfeed quizzes :D etc

@Sunisshiningandsoareyou Aw, thanks for the tag! Self care, to me, is anything that re-invests in you. My self-care includes teaching piano to my kiddo, watching dumb streams on Twitch, playing video games, cooking, gardening..

@nadiasaleh26

Hello, Nadia! It sounds like you're going through a difficult time. I am so glad that you're being so brave to seek support on this platform. *hugs* heart

Some of the simple Self-Care practices that we can apply in our lives when we are going through a difficult time are:

1) Getting enough sleep and eating well

2) Getting some sunlight and moving around

3) Identifying our triggers (i.e what affects us/ what makes us feel emotional) and talking with someone trustworthy & supportive.

4) Minimizing communication/ contact with toxic people and surrounding ourselves with positive & encouraging people.

5) Journaling our emotions and doing activities that makes us happy & productive.

Maybe you can consider doing some of these activities and I hope it helps. I really hope things get better for you dear. We appreciate you so much Nadia and we are all here to support you, okay? smiley

Stay Strong! heart

What are your thoughts on Self-Care and what are the Self-Care activities that you enjoy the most?

Self-care is important because it is a prerequisite for taking care of others. In order to do that well, you have to attend to your own needs. Some of those may not be obvious- like taking time to just sit, or drinking enough water. We can go long periods without taking care of ourselves and then burn out.

The things I enjoy the most include pampering baths or sheet masks, reading subscription box reviews (I never buy them but I like to calculate whether I think they are worth it to me!), listening to music, chatting with friends, organizing, sewing, writing letters... Those are a few things that have enhanced my sheltered-in summer!

@ethnographer

Hey, Ethno! I totally agree that self-care can be considered as a pre-requisite to take care of others, or else it may lead to burn-out! We need to fill our own cup with our own energy, and compassion first. smiley

Pampering baths, sheet masks, reading subscription box reviews, listening to music, chatting with friends, organizing, sewing, writing letters are relaxing and enjoyable self-care practices! That's great! smiley

I love to solve puzzles as a way of calming my mind down and spedning time by myself.

I enjoy reading in a similar way.

And now and then I really enjoy cleaning the house as a form of mindfulness and calming down.

Question: What are your thoughts on Self-Care and what are the Self-Care activities that you enjoy the most?

I think self care is incredibly important and like the pyramid demonstrated there are definitely different levels of care for one self, some more helpful than others..... Yet all matter in a way, even indulging in the small things help as I think, just like a stream, it trickles down to other areas. You making yourself feel temporarily good can inspire you to care more for other areas like basic needs too.

Personally I enjoy letting myself have breaks to read or simply relax outside of responsibilities, as well as making sure I am cared for in other areas (especially socially now I've got a hang of setting healthy boundaries so I still have energy left at the end of the week!)

@KatieTheBigRockOne

My thoughts on self care is that everyone one needs it and deserves it. I am not talking everyday self care, all thought I know many people (like myself) that take 15 minutes out of the day to do something they enjoy. You need to take care of yourself.. your health and hapiness is priority.

I really to draw nature pictures and play outside. Those are my top things that I do for self care but I do a variaty of things from walking to reading and dacing.

You need to try different things for your self care ! If thatone thing doesn't help then you know that it is probably not the best for you and try something else instead.

@KatieTheBigRockOne

Hey, Katie! That's correct! There are different levels of self-care, even though some maybe more helpful than others but practicing simple self-care to feel temporarily good may inspire us to care for ourselves in other areas especially for more elementary base levels (like basic needs). Totally agree with what you said!! smiley

Taking breaks, reading, relaxing, looking after oneself and having healthy boundaries are essential and calming self-care practices!! smiley

@Starmedia

What are your thoughts on Self-Care and what are the Self-Care activities that you enjoy the most?

I had a hard time balancing my university/work/personal life that I never thought to take breaks for myself,, and burned out. Burning out was totally unfortunate, but it made me reflect on where I was going wrong with approaching my life. I realised that I never gave myself time to look after myself; not taking the rest I need, not making sure to eat or drink plenty, not taking breaks. Self-care is so important for me, and for everyone, to incorporate into our lives. Life is so fast-paced that we often forget to step on the breaks and allow ourselves to rest. Rest should never be seen as a luxury, but a necessity. With that being said, a few of my favourite self-care activities is napping, talking a walk outside and writing in my journal :)

What are your thoughts on Self-Care and what are the Self-Care activities that you enjoy the most?

While, I believe that Self-Care is very important, I am guilty still as I do not put a lot of emphasis on Self-Care in most part of my life. Self-Care should always be a top priority and it is a choice! The activities I enjoy most are, consuming fruits like papayas and mangoes, taking a walk in the park, and writing poems!
