Needs: Let's identify them and meet them for ourselves! :)
Hello lovely Positivity & Gratitude Community! I hope all of you are doing well
Today I'm here to open a discussion about a person's needs or better, *your* needs, how you can identify them and how to meet them!
This article from Psychology Today about the What and the Why of Needs talks about how it’s not necessary to distinguish between desire, wants, and needs, rather we should look into how it’s a dynamic relationship between needs and strategies. So, to explain this in one sentence: strategies are what we want and needs are why we want it. An example mentioned in the article was how we strategize money to have various needs of ours met. Miki Kashtan talks along with their sisters came up with 4 broad categories that any need would most likely fall into. We have the basic one that includes food, shelter, fire, water and air under the Subsistence and Security, other than this, we have Freedom, Connection and Meaning. These are the ones we can easily put a need under. When we question why we want something at that particular time, and dig deeper, we will come closer to understanding indistinguishably what our needs are.
The first step to identifying your needs can be exploring the nature of your childhood. Growing up, children have a lot of needs and the primary givers of those needs are parents. But sometimes it’s not possible to meet every possible need of someone and thus we learn to adapt to how our needs were met while growing up. For example, growing up let’s say you didn’t get a lot of attention and love from your parents and you had to fight to get it from them, it’s likely that when you grow up, you are going to attract relationships where you are continuously trying to win over the attention and love from your partners/friends because without it you don’t have that need of yours met that connects you to people. The main reason we need our needs to be met is that it hurts when they don’t. In the starting of relationships, we may convince ourselves we are okay with our needs not being met (and sometimes we may not even know what our needs are, to begin with!) because we love the other person but long-term, this creates resentment within us regarding the bond we share with the other person. Our mind has “needs” both mental and emotional which means it absolutely needs to feel a certain way or at most, feel secure. As humans, we may share these 4 feelings that are needed: 1. Seen, 2. Heard, 3. Wanted, and 4. Safe.
The thing is, though, we are the only person responsible to meet our own needs, emotional or mental.
-
Begin by acknowledging that you have needs. When our needs aren’t met, we may be whiny, complaining, overreacting, snapping at people and whatnot, if that’s how you feel, first separate yourself as the subject and try to simply see yourself as someone with needs.
-
Be honest with yourself. Where do these needs arise from? Is it possible for you to dig a bit into your past and see how connections with other people follow a pattern? Can you really try to accept that it’s still your responsibility to meet those needs despite how you were treated in the past?
-
Accept that you have needs that make you look a certain way in relationships and how it’s your responsibility alone to meet your own needs.
-
Explore how you can provide yourself with the security and reassurance you need in relationships to yourself without asking someone else for it. Question. How aware do you think you are regarding your needs and how can you work on meeting those needs for yourself?

Hi lueur! What a fabulous read, thank you for tagging me and making this amazing post!
We had a group discussion yesterday on Needs in the Listener Discussions (/Learning I don't remember haha sorry) Room lead by @Mel and everyone came up with some interesting points. This was an amazing article which I got to know about by the courtesy of @jovialButterfly6752.

From this article (XD just felt like adding this one)

By Andy Ogden, posted here.
I also came across this interesting post (opens in Instagram browser version) by yourdiagnonsense. It talks about how you don't have to stop being needy and that everyone has needs in relationships with themselves and others.
The caption reads -
If you want a headache google “Is it ok to be needy” and you will find pages of articles entitled “how to stop being needy.” I just got an instant migraine. And now im anxious lol WHY! Why on earth are people still writing articles discouraging neediness.
Just sharing it all, give them a read of you'd like! :)
@theriverissinging
oh my gosh, River! I cannot appreciate you enough for adding really valuable points to this post! I absolutely love your points here and I want to thank you for including them in this space. Now, this definitely feels like a great discussion! :)
I agree, emotional and mental needs should be considered basic needs because all of us do need them! Oh no, I missed that discussion but it definitely sounds like an amazing one! And wow, thanks for sharing that amazing article, Jovial! I am coming across it for the first time but it seems really informative. I will give it a thorough read today.
The second image XD Wi-Fi should definitely be included there haha. I appreciate you so much for including all of those wonderful links, Riverrr! I am really going to take out time today to check them out!
I really liked the Instagram post that you included here. It's really interesting because now that I think about it, we are always hearing how it's not okay to be needy, how you are really being an immature person if you are expecting other people to do something for you (although my post was more about meeting some of the needs yourself, it doesn't mean it isn't okay to be way too independent in a relationship where you are not even letting your partner/friend be there for you). We all have needs and some of those needs do include people, that's why we bond with them in the first place. We are meant to live together, work together and learn from each other. That caption that you shared really just helped me a lot! I completely agree with that perspective. We all have our needs in a relationship and it's okay to be needy! It doesn't make you "difficult" or "clingy" to be with, if someone is choosing to be with you, then they are also choosing your clinginess, your need for reassurance and there's nothing wrong with it! It's okay to have certain expectations in any relationship and there are people out there who will gladly meet them! :)
Thank you so much for reading and responding, Riverr! I really appreciate it ![]()

Yayyy glad you liked the points. Thank you for starting this discussion. And yeah, for sure, hope you find some useful info in those links.
Thank you @theriverissinging ! It makes me enormously happy and glad you thought this would interest me and that you tagged me! I appreciate it.
This is indeed an amazing post, I'm going to read all the links and resources as soon as I can.
I surely need to take some time to reflect about my needs and the relationship I have with them, and how I expect people to meet them, how I talk about my needs with others vs how I try to meet other people needs.
Sometimes I think I neglect my own needs whether because they don't seem important or because I don't want to be aware of some of my needs because maybe it might be something too hurtful to acknowledge fully.
@Sonnenschein2000
Aw yayyy, so glad!
@theriverissinging Thank you for the tag too! This was very interesting
@lueurspace
Thank you for tagging me, friend! I think that I am pretty intuned with my needs but I can do better at respecting what I want and taking more breaks from unimportant tasks.
@HopieRemi
Thank you so much for reading and responding to it, my friend!
I really appreciate you. I am glad you are pretty much intuned with your needs. And for sure, I think taking out time for yourself and respecting what you personally want to be doing is a great way to build trust with yourself. I am sure you will be able to manage it all fine, you're awesome like that! :3
