Favorite board games?
I know this area is mostly centered around video / computer games, but I'm a big board game fan! Does anyone have a favorite one that I should check out?

Monopoly. Play it with people you don't care about though because it destroys friendships.

@ASilentObserver - I haven't played chess in a while, but used to a lot. Backgammon is a lot of fun, too - I grew up playing that
Codenames!
@AffyAvo - I LOVE Codenames! That's a current favorite among my friends :)
Monopoly! But I'm really competitive. Cluedo as well (Clue in the US) but I'm not as competitive with that. :)
@aimy - Ooooh..I haven't played Clue in ages, but I used to love that game. Might be time to dig it back out!

@Power - We'll allow it :D In my city, some bars/restaurants will have Giant Jenga out on a patio which is even more fun - picture the exact same game, but blocks made from foot long 2x4s

Scrabble, Trouble and Battleship ( I am old school ! Grew up in the 60s and 70s and these were popular then )
Betrayal At The House On The Hill! A board game where you explore a haunted mansion. The game has two parts. In the first part of the game, you and your friends select your character (they all have different stats, i.e fighting, intelligence, etc) and explore the mansion. You basically find different rooms in the mansion along with different items that your characters can have which is either a weapon, a charm that increases stats, or something that gives special abilities. The second part is when the 'haunting' starts. A haunting can be different every game depending on how the first exploration part of the game goes. Most hauntings have one of the players 'betray' the other players, which is usually by way of possession, curse, or whatever crazy story the specific haunting scenario has in it. The game has 50 different haunting scenarios so each game turns out to be very different from the other! In some hauntings the betrayer summons demons or zombies which you have to fight. Others hauntings have you running around looking for a specific room or item while the betrayer chases you around the house. Those are just a few examples. There's a lot more to the game, this is just a basic explanation. It's not a casual game and definitely takes time and more people to play! If you're really into tabletop gaming and haven't heard of this before, I would definitely recommend it!

We don't play too many board games. Sometimes Monopoly, although I usually sit that one out. We play more of the interactive games like Taboo or Apples to Apples. Those get us laughing and keep the uber competitiveness away.
One of my favorites was always Life. Then back in university, I used to hang out with a bunch of Risk players. That one was fun to watch, but I never wanted to play it. I used to play backgammon.

My husband and I are kind of board game geeks. Our game collection more than fills a bookcase. We have around 50 games at last count.
My favorite board games are Machi Koro, Dixit, and The Fury of Dracula.
Machi Koro is a town building game where you compete against other players o build landmarks in your town. A lot of it in the base game is the luck of the dice, but the expansions take more strategy. This game seems to consistently improve my mood even if I don't win.
Dixit is great for people with dyslexia. It works like this - one player each round announces a theme based off a card in their hand. The card isn't revealed and the other players have to vote on which card they think inspired the theme. If everyone guesses correctly or if no one gets it then the theme chooser doesn't score well. Other players earn points by guessing correctly or having someone choose theirs. My niece is severely dyslexic and is embarrassed to play board games but this game was fun for her.
The Fury of Dracula is my next favorite. It's an all against one game. My husband usually plays Dracula. It's 2-5 players, but works best with 5. You hunt Dracula across Europe and try to take him out before he takes over. It's a fun cooperative game but an take a long time.
@Hoping4Harmony Dixit is absolutely GORGEOUS! I've only played a couple of times, and I usually get lost looking at the cards...

I feel we would be friends. My hubby and I are the same. We have 4 Kallax units (4x2's) filled with board games. We have well over 150 probably. Our wedding was gaming themed as well. <3
