Course 1, Discussion 3: Avoiding Burnout

User Profile: Hope
Hope December 5th, 2022

7 Cups is founded on a community of passionate volunteers who lovingly dedicate their time to providing support.

You may face what is called burnout during your journey. You may have already faced this in your real life. Burnout is very real and must be recognized. You can't help fuel someone else when your tank is empty, after all!

Dear @Hope,

1. I finished the full path as a part of my elective in two week trial. I really enjoyed the path and it really helped me a lot in seeing the upper picture.

2. I will 😊

I've completed the minimum 5 steps on the Burnout Path. Some thoughts so far:

  • "Unclear work expectations can be a cause of burnout": so so true! It's therefore important to clarify the expectations others have of us AND the expectations we have of ourselves (and to ensure they're realistic!)
  • Burnout vs Depression: both can present similarly so it's important to explore both as possibilities. Especially as depression can develop as a result of burnout.
  • "Learning to ask for support" highlights that this is a skill that must be developed. I.e. it's not expected that we immediately be good at it or know how to do it. It is something we must learn and practice.
  • I wonder if it would be valuable to have a framework for communicating our need for support? E.g. the SMART framework for goal setting. So as to make it clear what exactly we're struggling with, what our 'timeframe' is for needed support, and what exactly we're looking for (so that we can actually get the type of support we need and the task will ultimately get done).

@awesomeForever34

After brainstorming for a bit (with the help of chatGPT!), here is a proposed framework for asking for support: C.L.E.A.R

C: context (explain the situation and why you're reaching out)

L: limit/ load (be honest about current limit/ what is too much right now + what you can and can't handle)

E: Expectation (clearly state what support you're looking for/ what exactly you need help with - be specific and actionable)

A: Amount of time (if this is temporary, ongoing or permanent i.e. just for today, this week, indefinitely)

R: Revisit (express thanks, offer to revisit the arrangement later/ suggest a follow-up conversation)

I hope you don't mind me replying to several of your comments! It looks like we're in the same group (August 18) so I'm sure we'll be bumping into each other a lot :)

Great job on deciding to take a day off from 7 Cups! As much as we'd like to be here more often, it's so important to take that time for ourselves to rest and recharge 💜

I recently completed the preventing burnout path the quiz. I learned some valuable tips and have already implemented a lot of what I've learned (including creating set schedules for my availability here with the hopes it will alleviate some of the pressure I feel to be present more than I'm able) 💜

The path was an amazing reminder to slow down and check in with ourselves!
