Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals
Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.
A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

A fundamental system I feel the need to establish in my life is one that encompasses life as a whole, including various major areas such as career, relationships, skills, and health.

Three behaviors I can implement to help grow this system are: deepening my theoretical understanding of each major area, organizing my time effectively to address each category, and identifying mistakes along the way in order to correct them and improve.

Thinking about a system for healthy living, especially with the demands of studying or working and childcare. It's about those small, consistent steps rather than trying to overhaul everything at once.
For me, a key system is intentional scheduling. This means looking at my week and carving out specific, even if short, slots for things like a 20-minute walk during a study break, prepping healthy snacks while the kids are occupied, or even just 10 minutes of mindful breathing before bed. It's not always perfect, but having it in the schedule makes it more likely to happen.
1. Hydration First: Starting each day with a big glass of water before anything else. It's a tiny habit with a big impact on energy levels.
2. One Healthy Swap a Week: Instead of drastically changing my diet, I focus on swapping one less healthy option for a healthier one each week. This week it's choosing fruit over a sugary snack.
3. Movement Snacks: Incorporating short bursts of physical activity throughout the day – a quick stretch while waiting for the kettle, a short dance party with the kids, taking the stairs whenever possible.
Remember, you are incredibly capable.Balancing studies, childcare, and personal well-being is a testament to your strength and dedication. Every small, consistent step you take towards a healthier lifestyle is a victory. I meet many parents and adult learners that do not give themselves enough credit and self care that they deserve. ❤️
I am building sustainable habits that nourish my body and mind, empowering me to thrive as a student and parent.
Keep focusing on those systems, celebrate the small wins, and know that you've got this! What are some of your thoughts on this? ❤️

A key system I need to set up is a structured time management routine. Since I’m naturally disciplined and goal-oriented, having a clear daily and weekly plan will help me stay on track and make the most of my strengths.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
-
Start each week by writing a to-do list and setting top priorities.
-
Use a digital calendar or planner to block out time for tasks, study, and rest.
-
Reflect at the end of each day to track what worked and adjust as needed.

Being Consistent, reviewing and adjusting, and having adaptability. 3. Self-care, remembering I am still human and taking time for me.

@Hope
What is the key system you need to establish in your life to help you succeed?
I definitely need to establish a better personal organization system. Sometimes I have a lot of ideas or things to do, but I struggle to prioritize and follow through.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually develop that new system?
Start each day by writing down the three most important tasks.
Use reminders or alarms to remind yourself of commitment
Spend 10 minutes at the end of the day reviewing what I accomplished and what I need to improve
@OyenteDiego I think these are excellent behaviours to keep you organized. Creating a to-do list and using reminders definetly will help you keep on track of your tasks throughout the day and reflecting on what you've done at the end of the day is a great way to know what you've completed, what still needs to be completed, and also can just be a reminder to show you've accomplished something today :)
@Diego7Cups
excellent behavior diego! i am inspired!!!
