Course 1, Discussion 5: 7 Cups Culture
Hello Leadership Crew!
I hope you have been benefitting from this course. This is the last discussion of our course 1.
We take culture seriously on 7 Cups because it is the heart of how we operate. A wise person once said: You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are. We can have all of the best training content we want, but if our culture is not strong, then we will not be successful in growing a thriving, compassionate, community that will make a global impact.
Every organization has a culture whether by design or by default. When culture (including values and mission are not called out or made explicit, the organization defaults to an implicit or unstated culture. The unnamed culture is not always great for the end users or the community. An example of a common and implicit cultural rule or norm is that the person that makes the most money or the organization is the most important. People that work in this organization then, naturally, because it is the culture, start organizing themselves around ways to make more and more money. The ones at the top of the hierarchy are the ones that make the most money. 7 Cups cares less about money and more about compassion. We call out compassion and celebrate compassionate people because that is central to the work we do.
Please read our guide here to deeply understand our culture. We have made it explicit because we believe it is important to help us all be accountable to what we stand for and believe in. As leaders on 7 Cups, you will be models that emulate our culture and values.

1. Expect and accept failure; that is a way to learn and grow in life. It is not your enemy.
2. Take care of yourself above all else. Prioritize your own feelings first and never discard it. You are your own best friend first and foremost.

The three things that stood out to me are:

Trust is essential as I believe It makes connections feel safe and real.

Expect failure - often when we dream a path, a goal , we imagine with no failure. But there won't be any path without resistance,setbacks and failing.
Not everyone is a good fit- this may not be what they meant but when i read it this thought came in to my mind. We often expect others to react, behave in the way we want. We expect allign with our thinking and support us in every single move. But in reality it won't be like that. There are people with different ideas, beliefs and behaviors. We must not get set backs because of that or become angry but rather see them as another individual with different ideas .
Trust reduces friction -when you trust people here in 7 cups , it is easier to open up, discuss and reach out. I find trust as as an important part of the 7 cups culture

1. Trust- I always believed in this. It is very necessary for me to trust and be trustable.
2. Conscientious and friendliness- It is very important and aligned with trust. It akso create an awareness within oneself I feel.
3. Collaborate- Supporting others is the main purpose I feel and for that we have to collaborate with each other.
In a way all the 3 things mentioned above are aligned with one another. And each one of those is to make us better human being I feel.

Three important things i took away from the guide are:
1. Responsibility & Accountability, that we are all responsible for our output and the support we bring. I consider this important because it reminds me that I am not simply a passive member of 7 Cups but an active participant who helps shape the culture of the community.
2. Trust through confidentiality and non-judgement, which helps create a safe space for members to seek support and share their struggles. A commitment to maintaining confidentiality, and listening without judgement is an important aspect of trust, because it allows for members to be vulnerable and share without concern of being judged or the things talked about used against them, which in turn helps them feel heard on their healing journey.
3. The 7 Cups Community as a living system, with the focus on us instead of me the guide highlights that the 7 Cups community depends on our collective contribution and is a team effort, and this resonated with me because it acknowledges that my small actions or support are part of a larger force for good that the community was set up for and works to maintain, which makes my efforts feel more meaningful as well.

............The 3 Most Important Things I Learned from the 7 Cups Culture Guide
The first thing that stood out to me was trust, it’s not just about believing in others but also being reliable so people can depend on you.
The second was finding the balance between high expectations and high warmth. It reminded me that we can work hard and still be kind and supportive at the same time.
Lastly, I learned how important self-care is. To truly help others, we have to take care of ourselves first.
These lessons taught me that real leadership is about empathy, balance, and staying grounded while making a difference.
Like the full cup story. I can pour only if I have my cup full....

Working hard can 100% coexist with being kind and supportive. In fact, I'd almost say that being kind and supportive is necessary to encourage us to work hard!
