Course 1, Discussion 5: 7 Cups Culture

Hello Leadership Crew!

I hope you have been benefitting from this course. This is the last discussion of our course 1.

We take culture seriously on 7 Cups because it is the heart of how we operate. A wise person once said: You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are. We can have all of the best training content we want, but if our culture is not strong, then we will not be successful in growing a thriving, compassionate, community that will make a global impact.

Every organization has a culture whether by design or by default. When culture (including values and mission are not called out or made explicit, the organization defaults to an implicit or unstated culture. The unnamed culture is not always great for the end users or the community. An example of a common and implicit cultural rule or norm is that the person that makes the most money or the organization is the most important. People that work in this organization then, naturally, because it is the culture, start organizing themselves around ways to make more and more money. The ones at the top of the hierarchy are the ones that make the most money. 7 Cups cares less about money and more about compassion. We call out compassion and celebrate compassionate people because that is central to the work we do.

Please read our guide here to deeply understand our culture. We have made it explicit because we believe it is important to help us all be accountable to what we stand for and believe in. As leaders on 7 Cups, you will be models that emulate our culture and values.

Learning to have empathy and understanding of any issues that someone is having without being disrespectful to their cultures and being mindful of others and to have self care breaks for yourself as well.

  1. Self-efficacy: Reward systems help keep people motivated and interested :)
  2. Trust: I like this because it works well when everyone is doing it.
  3. Collaboration: Being able to work with people on something is very rewarding if everyone is participating.

Three things that I love from the guide:

1. Collaborate - This is so important, and I love how everyone's thoughts and suggestions are valued here.

2. We Expect Failure - Failure is so important to grow, and if that doesn't happen, we'll just be in the same place.

3. We Invest in You - Something all organizations should do is this, opportunity to grow and a culture to thrive in as individuals and as a team.

@Hope I learned that failure is an opportunity to improve, that working hard every day yields good results, and that working as a team makes us stronger and more efficient

The 3 most important things I learned from the guide are that we want to work towards self-efficacy, making sure to take care of yourself, and making sure to have fun and be fufilled. I think that working towards self-efficacy is important because it shows that you are learning to trust yourself, and becoming better at what you do, which is valuable in giving you the confidence to solve new problems. I think that making sure to take care of yourself is important because I know that when I feel burnt out, the work I do is not as good as it could be, which affects my own wellbeing, and others I work with in 7cups. So its important to take care of yourself first so you can show up to 7cups as your best self. I think that its important to make sure that you're having fun and doing fufilling work because if you're not enjoying what you do, then it will inevitably lead to burnout or bring your mood down rather than lift it up. You also won't be enthusiastic about what you do and likley wont do your best work, so its best to make sure the work you do is fufilling so that you are enjoying what you do and are helping the community with your best efforts.

Trust: Team work allows for more efficient and satisfying results. Having someone to turn to in times of need makes us feel less alone and supported.

Problem-solving: Focusing on the solution than the problem on its own helps channel our positive energy to turning things around and giving us the ability to move forward.

Encouragement & Support: By working together towards common goal we have a purpose of why we do what we do and build a stronger community.

The 3 most important things I have learned from the guide are:

1. Take Care of Yourself : this is hugely important as if we don't care for ourselves then we can't help others.

2. Self-Efficacy or Mastery: self growth and learning is important and learning new things can help us expand our horizons

3. Accountability : It is important to be accountable to yourself, and in your actions as this is what sets us up for life.

@Always25

I love what you highlighted! Self-care is incredibly important. There's that saying "you have to help yourself before you can help anyone else"

Learning new things can be scary but almost always ends up being worth it in some way or shape.

Accountability is something we must all strive for throughout life. It can actually be incredibly difficult at times, but it is important!
