Course 1, Discussion 5: 7 Cups Culture
Hello Leadership Crew!
I hope you have been benefitting from this course. This is the last discussion of our course 1.
We take culture seriously on 7 Cups because it is the heart of how we operate. A wise person once said: You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are. We can have all of the best training content we want, but if our culture is not strong, then we will not be successful in growing a thriving, compassionate, community that will make a global impact.
Every organization has a culture whether by design or by default. When culture (including values and mission are not called out or made explicit, the organization defaults to an implicit or unstated culture. The unnamed culture is not always great for the end users or the community. An example of a common and implicit cultural rule or norm is that the person that makes the most money or the organization is the most important. People that work in this organization then, naturally, because it is the culture, start organizing themselves around ways to make more and more money. The ones at the top of the hierarchy are the ones that make the most money. 7 Cups cares less about money and more about compassion. We call out compassion and celebrate compassionate people because that is central to the work we do.
Please read our guide here to deeply understand our culture. We have made it explicit because we believe it is important to help us all be accountable to what we stand for and believe in. As leaders on 7 Cups, you will be models that emulate our culture and values.

Problem-solving is the pathway to success
- "we are all collectively responsible for the success of our mission. We do not try to avoid problems or explain them away. We face them directly and we work to overcome them."
- Accountability is incredibly important but can also be scary. It's important to take accountability and to remember that no matter what we work together as a community
- "We understand that people need to feel secure in order to take risks and grow." "Both high expectations and high warmth are required for us to be successful"
- High expectations can't succeed easily without high warmth. It's important to remember we're not alone in a community and everyone is rooting for everyone to succeed
- "We expect failure - failure is nothing to be scared of"... as long as you're not failing because you're distracted or simply not trying. "didn't fail 1000 time, he just learned 1000 ways of not solving the problem -Edison"
- Again, failure can be scary but is so necessary for growth! Redefining failure as a learning opportunity helps encourage it and ultimately growth
@awesomeForever34
Once again, I liked your insights.
@Hope
1. The problem is the path – It taught me to focus on solving meaningful problems instead of over-planning. It keeps me grounded and moving forward.
2. Try hard – Success comes from consistent, focused effort. Feeling mentally tired means I’ve done meaningful work.
3. Take care of myself – My well-being affects my performance. Self-care isn’t optional—it’s essential.
3 important things I have learned from the guide:
Self-efficacy. I maintain this by taking meaningful breaks to avoid stress.
Equality. Treat everyone with respect. Show empathy and compassion.
Have fun and be fulfilled. This helps take stress away from the job. Enthusiasm is good, it affects client interaction and makes you have high ratings.
@MicLartey1
You're absolutely right that having fun and feeling that sense of fulfillment can really help take away a lot of the stress. Thank you for pointing this out! It's a great reminder that I should be more aware of myself.
@Hope
1. Self-efficacy: i have been working on this since my childhood and it is the best people can spend time on. Challenge the problems you have instead of avoiding them.
2. Trust: Everything falls down if you don´t have this instilled and in action.
3. Time Management: Essential for life if you want to make the most of it.
@TheHearthofBelievers
I love this combination! thanks!
@AnonymousAvocado01
It is a nice one indeed!
@Hope
I learned to expect failure, collaborate and never stop giving my all. These were all lessons that I needed to learn, but I didn't know how. Thank you to 7cups for providing a space for me to learn those lessons!
So many important lessons within the guide.
Some that really stood out to me were the following:
1. "In order to perform well at work, you need to also take good care of yourself when you are not at work. Do not be in denial about this."
This is so important for me to remember. So often I find myself wanting to give more and more, even if it means I miss out on sleep, neglect my other roles and responsibilities off-platform, or push through even when my own health desperately needs some TLC. By doing that, I'm really wearing myself thin and putting unnecessary pressure on myself which will only affect my ability to provide the support I know I'm capable of when I'm at my best.
2. "You have strengths – things that you are just really good at when compared with others. Operating out of weaknesses is a drain. If you have to do work that you are not good at, then you won’t be as effective. Doubling down on your strengths enables you to level up much faster and it helps 7 Cups make much more progress."
I think it's important to remember not everyone needs to be an expert or offer support in all areas. It's natural to want to help as much as we can, but if there are areas we're more comfortable in (loneliness chats, for example) it's more beneficial for everyone involved to stay within our strengths instead of willing ourselves to offer support in areas we might not have as much experience or comfort in (like bullying chats as another example).
3. "Failure is nothing to be scared of and it is nothing to worry about as long as you are focused and trying. However, even with focus and engagement, you are still going to fail A LOT. And that is perfectly okay."
Oof, this is something I should print out and keep with me at all times! I've always had a deep fear of rejection and failure. It can get so heavy and overwhelming at times. It's so important for me to remember that I won't be perfect at everything and that's ok. It doesn't mean I'm a failure. It means I'm human.
@ThirteenHearts
I agree there was a lot of valuable information. I like your conclusion about how it makes you human to feel those things.
@Hope
3 important things I learned include:
- 7 Cups care less about money and more abuut compassion
- 7 Cups can help me pick up valuable information that can help people.
- “The problem is the path”
These are important to me because they reflect some of my core values; learning, compassion over money, and stoic philosophy.

✒️To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.
-I learned that instead of focusing on our weaknesses focusing on our strenghts to make sure we will keep them alive, envolving the love by being able to achieve our goals if we fight for it in order to have a productive life with the motivation and the fact that 7cups isn't money based at all. All of this reasons are important to me because in a world were we tend to work for money or only to make our people "proud" this app totally made me see the reality of compassion, humanity and understanding, where the listeners help by their genuine intentions and the administration has the same base. Humanity. 💜

✒️To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.
- Have fun and be fulfilled - be aware of how you are feeling and be honest with yourself. Also remember that if you are not enjoying what you are doing, this has the possibility of also affecting others and not just you.
- Take care of yourself - it is important to realise that to be able to effectively help someone else, you must take care of yourself in the first instance.
- We expect failure - you shouldn't be scared of getting things wrong. Don't let this hold you back from getting involved within the community.
@Sealiously
Great post! 💜
@Sealiously I agree. We shouldn't be scared of getting things wrong. It's all part of the journey
@Sealiously I really like this post!
