Course 3, Discussion 1: Service Leadership at 7 Cups
The term Service leadership (based on the philosophy of servant leadership, in which the main goal of the leader is to serve). Sometimes leaders or community members who help with projects receive high praise for their efforts (and they all deserve it) but this is never to take away or undermine the contributions of listeners who fly a little bit more under the radar. How one chooses to spend their volunteer time on 7 Cups is up to them & we love you all the same!
We've long said that if you want to be a mentor, be a mentor, eventually you'll get a badge. These service leadership roles are incredibly important to the functionality of our community. The individuals in these posts do an excellent job helping to keep our community safe and positive. I am very thankful for them.
Service leadership is simply about where you plan to spend your time. To those of you out there who focus 100% on member chats, we LOVE YOU! To those of you out there who focus on community programs, we LOVE YOU TOO! All of these contributions are equally valuable and important. As a collective community, our aim is to honor your contributions, no matter where or how they manifest.
In this vein, my hope is that you will remember 3 key things:
1. Self-care - always! Make sure self-care is baked into your volunteer work here
2. Don't take on more than you are able. If you don't have the bandwidth to do something, you owe it to yourself and the community to say no. It is 100% okay to say no. (And if you are asking someone to help you with a project, please do not get upset if someone has to say no.)
3. Remember that 7 Cups is an ecosystem. Every single contribution matters!
If you'd like to be in a service leadership role, my advice would be:
1. Pay attention to how others are contributing
2. Figure out what gets you excited in the community!
3. Once you have an idea of what gets you excited, dive in! You dont need to have a mentor badge to help out, get involved & start learning.
4. If you're not sure how to get involved, you can chat with a mentor or sign up for listener coaching.
5. Once you feel comfortable with your area of attention, apply for the appropriate mentor track.

Service leadership is known as when the leader sevres to the community. One example of service leadership I have seen on 7 Cups is the role of room supporters, it is very admirable!

I definitely agree with Room Supporters! The way they create such a warm and inviting atmosphere during chats and it is the reason I took a Room Supporter role!

I really like the idea of service leadership! The first thing I thought of off-7Cups is my church. The leaders there are all service leaders. The one example I've been a part of is Listener Support! Not only do I mentor, but I provide chat support and peer support. I also am a Room Supporter. These are all positions that I got down the line in support. I started with just peer support. I was very lucky to have a leader (@Jenna) reach out to me about leadership. There is even service leadership when the leaders are looking for other leaders. It made me feel confident to choose other roles I thought I would be good at.

Service leadership is the ability of a leader to prioritize people-first, and help people feel more valued, heard, and supported by heeding to their needs and elevating them towards a shared goal or purpose, rather than using authority to seek recognition.
For example, I love how 7 Cups leaders welcome new members, guide them through the detailed of the online community, help answer all questions, and offer emotional support.

The idea of service leadership makes sense to me. This is because I have always seen that leaders must be the most willing to serve others. One example of service leadership on 7 Cups is the general cheerfulness of mentors in assisting their trainees when needed.

Service leadership is where an individual prioritise serving the community and the needs of the people they are helping. On 7 cups I seen service leadership especially from room supporters and moderators hosting sessions, I observed listeners validating member's feelings and asking open ended questions. I am very impressed by service leadership and its something I inspire towards in the future.

One clear example from the community forums is room supporters (or chatroom supporters/mentors) who step in right away when entering a group chat: they check on people, spot trouble, take quick action to de-escalate, ensure everyone gets heard, and help keep the space positive and safe. They prioritize the group's needs over personal spotlight, embodying that "serve first" mindset perfectly.

Service leadership means leading by serving others, prioritising empathy, support, and community growth over authority.
On 7 Cups, a simple example is group moderators who warmly welcome newcomers and check in on members who’ve been quiet. That’s leadership through service: ensuring safety and belonging rather than seeking recognition.

The idea of service leadership is to serve the community by putting others before themself. One prime example of service leadership I have witnessed on 7 Cups is mentors and supporters who use their time to help others on subcommunities and forums. For ex. Anxiety, Depression support.

I agree! To add, I also think it's recognizing that the role means there is a cause greater than ourselves and we are working for that. At the same time, it means staying mindful of oneself to avoid spreading oneself thin for the cause. I believe it is a fulfilling role.

I think service leadership is the most holistic form that a leadership can take. It puts importance on the act of selflessness. It gives meaning to the position not as a means to gain power but being in genuine service to the needs of others. It fulfills the idea that by helping others, we help ourselves too.
Examples of service leadership I have seen on 7 Cups are the roles taken on by community mentors, moderators, and ambassadors.

I like the idea of service leadership because it shifts from recognition and acknowledgement to genuine impact. It reminds me that even the small and unseen efforts matter just as much as the visible ones. It also takes pressure off trying to "prove" yourself and instead encourages doing what you genuinely care about.
One example is listeners themselves who show up for member chats, offering support quietly. They might not always be in leadership roles but they play such an imp part in keeping the community safe and supportive!
