Course 3, Discussion 2: Accepting and Providing Feedback
If you prefer a video/audio explanation, please watch this video.
Some reasons why accepting feedback is important:
It helps us improve our craft/skills/ourselves
We become aware of our own short comings.
We can learn how others may perceive us.
Reasons why it can be challenging to hear constructive feedback:
We might associate it with who we are as a whole.
We may think the person giving it has lost respect for us.
It can hurt our ego.
The choice is yours! Are you willing to deal with discomfort for your greater good? If so then constructive feedback is an essential tool you must utilize.
Now let's see how to give feedback!
If you prefer a video/audio explanation, please watch this video.
Steps to give useful feedback:
Sandwich it between genuine positive feedback.
Don’t do it too often. Remember a person can only accept so much constructive feedback before it drains them. Use it sparingly.
Ask yourself what you are communicating is beneficial to the person or your own personal preference. Only provide feedback if it will help the person.
Let's practice giving constructive feedback.
This is the situation.

Hey CofeePerson, I wanted to thank you for you for being so punctual and always responding quickly. However, I would appreciate it if you would reach out when the task hasn’t been completed. You’re doing such a great job at providing empathy and I can see how much you care about people.

Person A is very responsive, and proactive in taking up accountability. The way she communicates with the users are also clear and precise, she can try and interact with the super users to show her work directly to them. Overall she is a great resource that we can continue to use her expertise to guide other team members as she is mentoring them in a great way
@courageousPup5706 This is good feedback.

Hello Coffee, I hope you are having a good day. I really appreciate how thorough and detail-oriented you are about everything, and that you are punctual and quick responding. I did want to talk about the assigned task that hasn't been completed within the given time and the lack of updates around it. I believe communication would really help us move forward with this task. I know you are empathetic and that you really care about this community so I am confident we can sort this out together.
@Adrestia
A really great way of giving feedback! I love how you end with "I know we can sort this out together". Your message is both clear and very supportive.

Hello Coffee! Hope you're doing well! You have always been very empathetic to others and care about people. Recently I have noticed your absence from the tasks in the past few weeks. I hope everything is going fine with you. I just wanted you to know If there's anything wrong and you wanna talk about it, I'm here to listen to you.
You have always been a quick responder. I hope you'll be respond soon this time around too. And please take care of yourself 😊
@TowardsTheR8Intent
I like how you've framed the feedback to be from the POV of asking if something is wrong and reassuring them you're there for support if needed. Very empathetic and kind!
@FrenchToast
Hi @CoffeePerson198, I really appreciate how punctual and responsive you always are, 😊 it shows your dedication and genuine care for the people you work with. I did notice, though, that your assigned task hasn’t been completed for the past few weeks, and there hasn’t been much communication about what’s holding it up. If something is getting in the way, please let me know so we can work through it together. You’re such a thoughtful and empathetic team member, and I’m confident that with a bit more follow-up, you’ll get right back on track.
Thank you so much for your work at 7 Cups and I'd love to hear from you soon!
@LopaConnect this was very well said!

Hi CoffeePerson198, you have been great with punctuality and the way you engage with the team using empathy and thoughtfulness. I've noticed you haven't completed the assigned task over the last three weeks and I'm concerned because there hasn't been any communication on this, it is important that we communicate proactively moving forward, and if you're stuck I can help. Your reliability and care for people are valued assets to the team, I'm confident we can get this back on track together.

Excellent message! It would certainly be a nice message to receive when getting feedback.
@FrenchToast
Hey Coffee! Just wanted to check in and share a bit of feedback. You’ve been doing great with communication and dedication, but we noticed your assignment hasn’t been finished in a while. We just want to make sure you’re okay and remind you we’re here to help if you need support or a short break. Thanks for all you do!
@RyanListen
I think this is a really good message! It's straight to the point but doesn't slack in the praise sections either. If I were CoffeePerson198, I would not feel defensive at all upon receiving this message and we would likely have a very productive chat. ^^
@RyanListen Great response and straight to the point.
