If someone smiles at you in the street, what do you think and do you usually smile back?

I live in a very friendly city so most people will smile and say hi! I absolutely love it! I've also lived places where people didn't smile, but I always smiled at others

I will usually smile back if someone smiles at me first. I have a hard time smiling at strangers if I am the first one to do it though. I have this irrational fear that they'll get mad at me 😅

Nice that you smile back! I believe we all need to smile more so it becomes normal to smile at people in general and at a stranger and no one needs to feel strange about it.

Mostly depends on the context:
From where I am?
In New York (northern states), Generally you don't look at the peoples faces. Keep your head down.
In the southern states, it is ok to look at people
How am I feeling?
There are days I don't wish to acknowledge humanity.
Depends on what is on my mind.
There are days I am so engrossed with my inner thoughts, I forget to "look"
But over all , if someone smiles at me (and I feel it is a kindness) I will smile back and acknowledge them with a nod or hand gesture

It's good to know what's the local "to do" and "not to do" to avoid appearing offensive.
