Eating for Mental Health
"Your diet is a bank account, good food choices are good investments"
The consumption of sugar can have negative impacts on your general health but also on your mental health by creating sugar spikes. Managing emotions with sugar may only make your feelings of sadness, fatigue, or hopelessness worse. However, it's not only sugar, it's about many things we eat, too much and unhealthy fats, artificial additives like food colouring in drinks (instead of natural beta carotine or beetroot as an example). We all know a healthy diet is important for our well-being but
How important do you think is having a particular diet for mental health conditions?
Can you give an example of what you eat less or avoid to keep your brain power?

How important do you think is having a particular diet for mental health conditions? As I experienced when I was eating lots of carbs including sugar and starch.
Can you give an example of what you eat less or avoid to keep your brain power? I try to avoid high carb meals. I eat more plant protein, no harm dairy and eggs, and only small amounts of carbohydrates, with more low carb veggies and fruits. It helps my moods.
Another thing that helps is small meals or protein snacks every 3-4 hours. It keeps me from dragging tired.

How important do you think is having a particular diet for mental health conditions?
iI think it can be very important. of course, the amount of food you eat can contribute greatly to your mental health. you have to eat the right amount for you <3 and i know that some foods (mostly plants) can make you feel more relaxed, focused, etc.
Can you give an example of what you eat less or avoid to keep your brain power?
i avoid any animal products as i am a vegan and make sure to eat lots of fruits and vegetables instead of junk foods to stay healthy and keep my body happy <3 i notice that when i don't eat enough of the right foods, i can become very irritable and cranky. so, when i eat more plants, i feel so good !
@rrretsuko
I can totally relate to feeling better with plant based food since I'm vegetarian, it simply feels "lighter" to me.
How important do you think is having a particular diet for mental health conditions?
I think that a balanced diet is good for overall health, but in terms of eating for specific mental health conditions, I haven't really looked at evidence that suggest a certain diet aliviates them (although I'm sure there's been research!). I have heard eating certain foods may help lower your risk of dementia, and of course not eating a lot of sugar helps keep brain power strong as well. But really, I think that if you eat healthy foods that lower your risk of physical diseases such as cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol, your mental health will surely thank you as well.
To give a more personal example, when I have very strong anxiety, I don't feel like eating anything at all. My stomach just "closes up", basically. So even if I get myself to eat something carb-heavy such as bread, that's really doing my body and mind a favor.
Can you give an example of what you eat less or avoid to keep your brain power?
I've been trying to eat less sugar and salt, and swapping red meat for beans and lentils to get my protein. Though It's very hard for me to let go of sweet things since I have a rather large sweet tooth.
@cafedaydreams
Nice to read how much you know your body and what is good for you. I have a big sweet tooth too and it was hard to let go of sugar, I did it completely years ago. Something that helps me when I feel the need of something sweet are dehydrated banana or a few raisons. Another thing is that if I eat spicy hot homemade crackers I don't feel the need for something sweet at all.
@amiablePeace77
ami, thank you for all you do.
You do a wonderful job and do so much so well.
I believe what you eat effects all parts of our bodies.
I have had stomach surgery and have to mainly eat within the guidelines for that, or else. But, I do agree with your topic.
Thank you ami
How important do you think is having a particular diet for mental health conditions?
I believe being mindful of what you are eating is very important not only for mental health conditions but your overall health. There is a reason why a lot of experts such as SAMSHA include not only diet but exercise as one of the dimensions of wellness.
Can you give an example of what you eat less or avoid to keep your brain power?
Some of the things I do as part of my diet to promote my mental health/wellness/nutrition includes not eating any meat or animal products unless it is absolutely necessarily for my health, eating fruits and veggies, adding eating a lot of produced foods and fast food as much as possible. Also limiting a lot of sugary drinks and soda. I am an avid water drinker and make my own fresh smoothies and juices.

I think it is very important to pay attention to what types of foods make your body and mind feel good. I don't eat dairy, gluten, or animal products very often. When i eat those things my body swells, gains water weight, my hair falls out, and i feel like i am drunk. I cannot form thoughts very well either. Brain power can be directly related to what you consume, in my experience.
