Hello @amiablePeace77...☺️

If i remember correctly, recently i have heard this phrase that you mentioned... ''You are what you Eat".

I think that food, body and mind are really connected... If we have an healthy way to eat it can do something positive to our body and mind.... and also we can feel more energized...

Otherwise if we have an unhealthy way to eat it can makes negative symptoms to our body and mind....

These are my thoughts.... 😃

@KACOSMIC It is true. Eating too much unhealthy food can cause health issues.

@KACOSMIC

Thank you for sharing these thoughts, I can only agree to what you said! For example our sugar intake can greatly affect how calm we are. Too much can lead to irritability.

I get what this phrase is trying to say but I also feel like there's a slight ignorance behind it. As someone who is in recovery from an eating disorder, this phrase is something that has always stuck with me. I think it can induce self-blame and guilt in someone who is struggling with their eating.

Also, I think it comes from a very privileged place. Not everyone can afford "good" nutrition. Contrary to the myth, eating "healthy" is incredibly expensive. Easily accessible, low-maintenance, and calorie loaded foods tend to be cheaper. Once again, I think throwing this phrase at someone who lives off of these types of meals, can induce self-blame and guilt.

However, yes, from a recovery stand point, I can see why it's supposed to be positive. It shows that our food choices are just as important as when it comes to self-care and sometimes, this is the best thing we can do. But

@AstrologyYogi

I'm very sorry if this post made you feel uncomfortable in any way, this was not the intention at all. Dealing with and eating disorder is hard and it's true, sadly some people simply can't afford good nutrition. Often though people do have choices, even if it's just the choice of buying an healthy apple or a small bag of chips.

Congratulations for being in recovery, this surely wasn't easy!

I think while the actual "coined saying" might've meant well as an "old wives tale", that in todays time's not much so.

But, overall I think many of us know how food plays its part in our "Overall wellbeing". Whether its Physical, emotional, mental etc... Food can affect all of that in many ways. Healthy food can equal a Healthy Body & Mind. And help to nourish us from within, which helps us to feel good all over inside and out.

And while I don't personally like to look at foods as a "Negative" , as I feel that we all have a right to "Treat" ourselves in moderation & occasion. I don't like the term "Cheat" or "Cheat Day'.... As it makes it seem like we are doing some "wrong" when in fact we aren't. Its ok to treat ourselves and to be ok with that choice. And then continue to move forwards with the next meal into a more healthier option that nourishes us and adds a more positive benefit overall for ourselves.

@PoliteOcean

I agree PoliteOcean, an occasional treat can be really motivating too, simply something to look forward to.

@amiablePeace77 while I would not go so far as to say you are what you eat, I think in my case, I felt the way I did because of the food I ate. Heavy grain diet light on protein left me sleeping and not thinking clearly.

Lately a protein rich diet even with lots of vegetable protein has helped me boost my emotions.

In many ways I agree with the sentiment behind the phrase, because what we put into our bodies affects us so much mentally and physically. However, the way it's worded can slightly bother me; possibly because I am also in eating disorder recovery.

I think what bothers me about the phrase is that it is linking food with our identity. But I don't think it's healthy to closely identify ourselves, and who we are as a person, by the foods we do or don't eat. Part of what made it harder for me to recover from my ED, was because it had become part of my identity. Letting go of that was difficult for me.

@resourcefulPond1641

You made a good point there. ED is something very challenging to deal with. I'm so glad you could let go of that unhelpful and false identity. When people say "You are what you eat" it remembers me of when I eat too much fruit high in sugar, carbs etc. it can lead to feeling irritable but I am not irritable. Thanks for your answer!

It is so true- that we are what we eat. Our bodies require the correct fuel. Why put the wrong food in the tank and expect peak performance.
