Sleep Deprivation and Mental Health

Hello everyone
Todays post is about sleep deprivation and mental health. Sleep deprivation can have many bad side effects, some of them are:
Memory issues - Trouble with thinking and concentration
High blood pressure - Risk of heart disease
Higer risk of accidents because of reduced alertness and poor balance
Rrisk of diabetes and much more.
Below I like to go more into detail about some specific points.
Alzheimers disease
A lack of sleep will actually prevent your brain from being able to initially make new memories, so it's almost as without sleep the memory inbox of the brain shuts down and you can't commit new experiences to memory, meaning all new information is simply being discarded.
Also a lack of sleep will lead to an increased development of a toxic protein in the brain that is called beta amyloid and that is associated with Alzheimer's disease. It is during deep sleep at night when a sewage system within the brain actually kicks into high gear and it starts to wash away this toxic protein beta amyloid. If you're not getting enough sleep each and every night more of that Alzheimer's related protein will build up and the more protein that builds up, the greater your risk of going on to develop dementia in later life.
Emotional swings
Experts have found that in sleep-deprived patients, the amygdala, a part of the brain that processes emotion, becomes "rewired" in a way that reduces our rational response to external events. These individuals have big emotional swings, going from upset to giddy in moments. Sleep deprivation can even create symptoms similar to those of schizophrenia.
Depression
Investigators have discovered that individuals with depression who improve their sleep experience a faster response from antidepressants.
Seven steps to improve your sleeping habits for better mental health
1. Establish a regular sleep-wake cycle - try to sleep and wake at regular times consistently.
2. Try to ensure that you have a comfortable bed and bedroom - noise, light and temperature should be tailored to your preferences if possible.
3. Limit the use of stimulants - such as caffeine, nicotine and alcohol near bed time.
4. Avoid drinking excessive liquids - especially in the evening to minimise chances of waking to empty your bladder.
5. Avoid going to bed until you are drowsy and actually ready to sleep - Most people who suffer from insomnia spend more time in bed lying awake rather than actually asleep.
6. Regular daily exercise - but not too late in the evening as this could be stimulating.
7. Avoid electronic devices late at night - such as computers, mobiles, tablets and so on; the bright light can be overly stimulating and keep you awake.

How does lack of sleep affect you?
Sometimes it'll cause worse depressive symptoms and I'd get really worked up over small things. My thoughts and emotions are harder to reign in and I feel less 'real', like a dream. To be honest, when I was younger, I tried depriving myself of sleep on purpose because I thought it would help me feel less anxious (due to the whole 'numbed emotion' part). It didn't work lol
I am 67 years old and I work full time in a hospital, evening and night shifts back to back. I have never been this anxious about coming to work. It is bad enough trying to manage sleep during the daytime, but this extra stress makes it even harder to get th sleep i need. My coping mechanisms are to take a 5 mg melatonin tab before sleep and I try to sleep late on the nights I do sleep at home. I have cut back wine drastically and drink soothing herbal tea. There are times when the worry keeps my mind rolling in circles when I should be going to sleep. The only thing that works then is to focus on breathing in a meditative fashin and gently say to myself "In... Out" until i fall alseep. It sometimes take a while and i have to remind myself to re-focus as my brain kicks back in - but it usually works to help me drift off eventually. Thanks for the chance to hare here - we are all in this together.
@MusicCandy
Nice to see you here! I am happy that you found these things to help yourself. I really loved what you shared here about herbal tea and meditative breathing.
Its a tough time for everyone now but much more for people like you, working in hospitals with all the stress and long hours. Thanks for all you do!

It interferes with my day to day activities and all of my duties. I also experience headaches and many times irritability. These days have been very difficult for me. I am trying my best to hang on in there. I am exhausted and on the verge of giving up due to all the hardships that I am facing. I really pray for this to end.

This has been one of the biggest problems of my life..
I have been struggling with this since forever it seems. This is the core reason as to why I joined 7 Cups
When I am unable to sleep I fear that I won't be able to carry out tasks easily. Not being able to work as I used to is also one of the fears of my life. Idk how to cope up with things when I am unable to sleep because I become highly cranky
@bubbleCircle3689
Sorry to hear that you're suffering from lack of sleep for so long, I can only imagine how hard it it to get through the day and always fearing that things might go wrong because you can't focus as much as you want. Was there ever anything that helped?
This is a link to a self-help guide for sleeping well, hope you find something that is beneficial to you https://www.7cups.com/sleeping-well/
There are 3 types of sleep they say...
I was always a freak so melatonin or valerian products never work on me...
Lack of sleep is indeed very detrimental that is why in modern days it is used as an accepted torture to bring a person to their braking point...
Throughout my life my experiences with sleep were very different...while I worked, I never had to use an alarm clock in my life since my body knew to wake up at the exact hour...or even if I had to wake up at 3 am to catch a plane my body would wake me up with no alarm clock, weird ay?😉😊
I never experienced deep sleep (though I so wish for it) and I never snore😊 though I was never bothered by snoring people or noises...
My sleep is a rabbit like sleep, aware of my surroundings at all times...
I even begun to like the continous streak of nightmares I have since my depression set in...they simply never frighten me anymore and I can increasingly remember them in detail and colour...
Sleep delravation is very detrimental to normal heath yet many geniuses were helped by their plaguing insomnias..and gave them extra working time...
Also if you are a free person, catch sleep whenit comes, not when you want it to come, feel like an animal and sleep when your eye lids feellike closing, but for that you need tobe a free being...😔
@GreenAndRedBoat
Sorry to hear you that you're suffering from depression, it's a tough thing to deal with.
Responding to our body's "calls" as you mentioned is very helpful. Going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time every day helps to set up a consistent sleep schedule. Hope you will get deep sleep in future.
I feel like I have never had a restful sleep my whole life. Long story short, I did a sleep study, found out I have sleep apnea and now sleep with a C-Pap machine. It is so wonderful waking up feeling refreshed!
@Teresa416
I am always grateful for all the good inventions we have nowadays when I hear stories like yours. Glad that the cpap machine helps you to get the restful sleep you need.
@amiablePeace77
Thank you! I mentioned it because many nights without good sleep can mess with your head/ depression/ anxiety. Maybe someone reading my post will look into a sleep study and feel better as well.

How does lack of sleep affect you?
I have a pretty good sleep each night. Although at times I still take a power nap so I can refresh my body and mind. Even if the nap is not long.
I have always listened to my body because it knows what it needs better than I do. Especially during this pandemic, our bodies are all out of whack. If I feel like taking a nap at noon and I jusy woke up at 9am, I take a nap! My friends think I am nuts but it works for me. If I am craving ice cream, my body needs more calcium, etc .. Just listen and your body will talk to you
. It's amazing how much our boies can do for us if we listen.
