Mindfulness Daily Check-In March 22

User Profile: ASilentObserver

Goood Morning My Awesome Mates heart How are we doing today? smiley

Mindfulness is an awesome tool for mental well-being and get focus on NOW compasionately. I remember I told someone about mindfulness and they were like, "Oh I need to sit like folding legs with closed eyes for an hour? " I was like, "Nuuuu, that's not true." Took time to explain the stuffs about mindfulness and they get that what they talking about is meditation and it is one of the ways to be mindful. Not the only form of mindfulness.

I guess he wasn't alone who have such thoughts. I guess many think that way. That's fine because meditation is practiced more actively and we lack knowledge about mindfulness. It happens. So, due to being unaware about it, we have certain stereotype beliefs about mindfulness and that's what I'd like to share and discuss with you. smiley

Getting started with meditation is only form of mindfulness. Meditation is one form and even meditation has different ways to perform. Mindfulness is really big. It is about being present in this moment without judgement with full focus. Even washing dishes is form of mindfulness. smiley You can easily find mindfulness in every activities you do.

When it comes to mindfulness, many think it is about being quiet. surprise No noise. Not true. You can be mindful even amidst of noise of horns. Staying tuned with the traffic rules and lights is a form of mindfulness you following while driving. When you doing something with intentions and motivation, that is mindfulness. Probably, at home kids making noise while you reading this post. You trying to be mindful of what you reading.

This is something many questioned me, "I am practicing mindfulness but it has no impact on me. No change." Yeah, agree with them. Mindfulness not start giving 100% results from day One. Like, to give exam you study entire year. You not get prepared for it in one day. Similarly, mindfulness is about practicing everyday and experiencing its impact slowly and steadily.

Mindfulness is just for people with mental health issues. surprise Yeah, many said this. Undoubtedly it is great for people with mental health issues and help them to cope up with it effectively. But not mean, you can't try it. Even you can practice. Mindfulness is for improving mental well being and we all need it. Isn't it?

So, these were few myths I had which I came across. Is there any myth you know about mindfulness? How could we spread awareness and overcome these myths? Let's discuss together.

@ASilentObserver

I try to explain it like a "self check-in".

You're looking at yourself physically - your neck hurts and you figure out that your shoulders are at your ears from the bad day at work and you take steps to relax, breathe, stretch, or whatever to get your shoulders in a more natural position.

You're looking at why emotional response may be happening - why am I about to explode in the grocery line? Is it the bad day culminating as you wait behind three people to just get your jug of milk? Is it your running late to get the kids and you made the choice to stop and get milk before picking them up and now you're frustrated at this "in and out, won't take a minute" task not going as planned?

You're evaluating internal dialogue - I'm stupid and a waste of air. Wha? Where did this thought come from? Have I ever been told that? What can I do to get rid of it? I need to replace that thought with something more positive. Let me take control of the "brain talk" and start re-writing this script and get rid of this self-defeating words.

You're taking stock from toes to the top of your head - emotions, thoughts, pains, aches, et al. Taking time for yourself to see what's impacting you, what's emboldening you, and what's on the fringes that may be shaping your day, life, thoughts and actions

Or am I totally off??

I like the way you put this. Mindfulness is being present. Knowing what's going on in your body, and in your mind is a good thing. It helps us take care of ourselves.

@RayneStorm

Thanks. :D

It really is the art of now. Being present with yourself at the moment.

Ever wonder how much stuff you do on autopilot in your day? Answering the phone. Clicking your pen. Tapping your toes. WIggling. Just subconscience little things going on -- why? Is our body trying to get up and leave us? Are we burning off nervious energy? Is our brain telling us to take a break?

I've ended up at restaurants for lunch on autopilot. :D

@ASilentObserver - I think you summed up the most common misconceptions about mindfulness. It's a little funny because mindfulness is so inclusive, that these myths are both a bit true and a bit untrue, a little meta given what mindfulness aims to acfomplish, right?

One that I have also heard is that people practice mindfulness to reach nirvana or euphoria. In fact, as Thich Naht Hahn would say: we cannot ever achieve nirvana because it is already within us, we merely become aware of it. One of the purpose of mindfulness is to let go of purpose, to learn how to exist wihout chasing goals, without running towards something we want in our futures, but to be aware of the present moment as wholly as possible, amd therein within that awareness and being fully alive right now, we may experience the nirvana that already exists within us. Meditation is an amazing tool and I think own if the ways many peoplease learn about mindfulness, but you're absolutely right. Mindfulness is a lifestyle. It is easy to find that peaceful place the more we practice it. Anything can be done mindfully, chores, work, play, &c. It's not easy to find it wih in ourselves largely because many societies encourage us to chase things, encourage us to always be doing in order to do the next thing, habit energy is even encouraged. But it is possible to ease into mindfulness until more and more it becomes a part of your lifetstyle.

I have more thoughts, but I see I am rambling.

This is good enough for now. /end rambling

@ASilentObserver

Some people believe that with mindfulness/mdf meditation a state of "perfection" is achieved, nothing will bother us anymore.

To me it is totally different, mindfulness teaches me to connect to the now and to realize that what is now is good enough.

I've heard some people said mindfulness is like meditation. It's not 100% wrong or 100%true. We could practice in everyday life but we could also practicing in meditation. For me mindfulness is all about present moment. How we really aware about now, really feel the wind blow, really feel the taste of food we eat, really knowing our own mood, feel our foot touch to the ground.

I've learnt about mindfulness and practiced in my daily life long time ago. I need to practice it more now. The easier practice of mindfulness is when I eat. I only focus to the food in my plate. Not holding phone, not watching tv, not reading book, not talking with friend. Just eat. Taste the food in our mouth, really enjoy the taste and when it through to my stomach.

I also try to really in present moment when I talk to my daughter or to my friend. I put away my phone and trying to set my mind only to listen what they said. It's not working good all the time sometime my mind wandering around too.

Well...this is my thought. I am new here and so sorry if I am wrong :)

@ASilentObserver hello! as an overthinker, it's becoming bad for me because i tend to become negative. What i do is reading Aurelius' Meditations book so I can wake up from all negativities from overthinking.

Can i ask what the difference between mindfulness and overthinking is?

User Profile: ASilentObserver
ASilentObserver OP March 23rd, 2018

@ineeddiligence lovely thoughts and good question Diligence.

One of the difference between two is in overthinking, you likely to judge,stuffs, actions, behavior easily. While when you are mindful, you focusing in present compassionately and without any judgement. Just witnessing the moment.

For example, when I play chess, I focus on playing only. Not about win or loss. Or something else I need to di like wash dishes, clean the room or so. Just focus on play.

While in overthinking, i could be half thinking aboit next move while half thinking if this move will cost me the game. If I lose, other person will think I am loser. If I will win, he will get jealous. Omg, so many thoughts to handle and lost the purpose of playing.

My purpose was just to play and improve. And, that's what one able to do when they are mindful. I hope it helps and makes some sense. 😊 thank you
