What are your thoughts on compromises in relationships?

Hi everyone! I hope you are well. There was a time when people used to recommend that one must compromise in any relationship for it to work. Nowadays we live in a very opposite world where the general recommendation is to never compromise.

However one must wonder if there is a middle ground. Should we always give in to maintaining a relationship or never budge and lose relationships?

In the past, we were expected to even compromise needs. For example, give up your dreams to work a job to help the family. However nowadays sometimes people won’t even give up their free time to help someone out because they see it as prioritizing self-care.

What are your thoughts on compromises in relationships? Where do you draw the line?

Speaking from my own experience, sometimes there’s nothing coming from my partner it’s always me the one that has to sacrifice and do everything.

It's one thing to make a compromise in a situation. Compromising yourself in a situation is another thing entirely. That's what boundaries are there for, to help you avoid that.

Also, relationships should be about growing together. I feel like I've personally spent too many stagnating with someone. What's even worse is relationships staying in one person's direction at the other's expense.

So, yeah, make compromises where possible. Listen, and stay proactive about it if you can. Those are my feelings on it

I think in some relationships ......compromise went too far in one direction........

the loudest partner got their way and the compromises were never even....... this causes issues and eventually the person who often gave up the most finally has had enough...... before this happens... is where healthy boundaries need to come in.

everyone likes to get their way but as a partner you should see what the other person is giving up ... and reciprocate as often as possible. This is a balancing act and many issues happen when one person is NOT treating it as such.

I think it would be alright as long as things are within reason. You don’t want anyone to make a big sacrifice and no one appreciates it.

What are your thoughts on compromises in relationships? Where do you draw the line?

Ohhh my … the age old question

Compromises are absolutely required in any relationship.
Relation with your work? You give up x number of hours for y number of dollars. That is a compromise.

If you have a dream you wish to pursue, in relation, your spouse may wish to pursue their dream. Is it ok for you to pursue and deny the spouse their dream? In either case there is a compromise.

So in the logical sense, there must be compromise to have relation.

Where to draw the line?

The Line is drawn here and now in the moving sands.

I perceive a line is drawn and redrawn minute by minute, hour by hour and day by day.
Circumstances, context, and situationally pushes and pulls where the line is drawn. I also think it is something that needs to be openly discussed. The Line is not A + B = C.

The model described in the website below gives 5 options for conflict resolution, of which compromise is just one. The idea is that we tend to favour one, but actually the right one to use depends on the context of the situation.

I think this is a good approach - compromise is one tool among many in my relationship tool box. Sometimes it is the right tool to use, sometimes it isn't. If it is the only tool I'm using, I'm likely to have problems. If I never compromise, I'm also likely to have problems.

Not just in past but at present too people wish to say that to solve a problem there are always needs to be some compromises made and some common ground to be found . But as far as advicing online is concerned , one can be even reported for giving good advice , the person giving advice could be end up in chaos, so those people just rather give politically correct answers and letting them think for themselves. Not everyone is ready to listen the truth. Once upon a time it was based on feedback and people understood now its more like if a person says something , it has become more likely a battle of egos. Because of which the places where both parties shows understanding benefits from it all.

I think compromise is a good thing in relationships. I think when two people start sharing their lives together, some things have to change between them. I think this is where compromising comes into play. However, I think compromise should not be very common and should not be one-sided.

@Hope - This is an excellent question to ponder.

I think that most of the time, some compromise in relationships is a good thing. For instance, friends taking turns choosing where they will eat for dinner, or siblings who have a rotating chore list, but sometimes swap chores. At our house, we believe that if you cook dinner for everyone else, then you shouldn't have to do the dishes afterwards :)

I recently heard a celebrity (I forget who, doesn't matter) talking about how she and her partner would rate their physical/mental/emotional energy levels. "I had a hard day, and I am sick, so I can only give 20% today", and then the other partner would try to pick up some of the extra responsibilities, so that together, they could reach 100%. And each day, it was a little different. But I thought that was a nice idea.

However, I completely understand that sometimes, compromise can turn into always giving someone else what they want - and that is not usually healthy in relationships.

Compromising situations are two:-

1. Informing already: when you can inform things before, you both can sort it out without any fuss. In this way, you can avoid compromising in certain situations.

2. Random: Sometimes you've got to face some unexpected situations that expect you to compromise. If it's necessary, you can stay with your person; otherwise, you both can decide it out by talking about it.

Always speak your mind.

Never delay the conversation.

Everything will be alright.

Otherwise, ego will be splattered everywhere.

"Most of the time, the term compromise interferes between people because of ego."

Just smile and say, "let's see what we can do about it."

You will be alright.

Enjoy!
