Real People, Real Support (Patience, Good Intent and AI)
7 Cups is a community built on one simple, powerful idea: humans helping humans. In a world where AI is becoming the norm, it's more important than ever to remember our foundation. 7 Cups remains a human-first and human-reliant platform for emotional support. Genuine, empathetic listening is a skill our volunteers work hard to develop, and it's something a bot cannot replicate.
This isn't to say AI has no place. It can be a powerful supplement to assist our listeners when they get stuck, helping them find the right words. Furthermore, AI can be an important accessibility tool. For listeners who are neurodivergent, have a disability, or are non-native speakers, it can help bridge the gap between their empathetic thoughts and the words they use to express them. The key is to strike a balance; our goal is to give space and leniency to those who are trying their best to help. AI should be a tool that enhances human connection, not a crutch that replaces it.
Ultimately, the member should always feel the genuine support coming through the person. This is why we urge members to be patient and understanding. Accusing a listener of using AI can be deeply dispiriting and may discourage the very people who have volunteered their time to help. If you suspect AI usage that is disrupting your experience, you can always ask politely. Just remember, listeners show up because they care, so let's lead with good intent.
Technology will continue to evolve, but the need for genuine human connection will not change, so let's do our best to use the tools we're given with care and moderation to observe this balance and remain true to ourselves as the human-first community that we stand for.

I really appreciate how this highlights the heart of what makes 7 Cups unique. This community is about people supporting one another. At the same time, I love the perspective that AI can serve as a supportive tool rather than a substitute. Especially those who might struggle to find the right words. I also think the reminder about patience and good intent is really important. Our listeners show up because they care, and leading with trust and understanding helps everyone feel safer and more supported. Technology will keep changing, but the need for authentic human connection is needed and can't be fully replaced.

I feel like I have spent a lot of time talking to both hoomans and AI now lol, and honestly, you can really feel the difference. People who know, just know.
I’m glad reminders like this exist because, yes, AI can be a fantastic bridge, whether for accessibility, language support, or helping someone find the right words when empathy feels hard to express. But I also think it’s important that we don’t rely on it just to “save time” or “save effort,” because what makes 7 Cups so special is that deeply human connection like you said and real connections, even across the screen, cannot be build by saving time or emotional effort, I believe!
AI can be great at reflecting emotions, or paraphrasing stuff we tell it, but it often feels a bit too polished or even distant like, “I hear you are saying… that sounds bad,” whereas a hooman will really sit with your pain and respond with genuine warmth, even if their words aren’t perfect or if they don’t use proper grammar or spellings. There’s also the relatability factor, people who’ve been in similar shoes, people who can relate with an experience and empathise better with you.
That’s what I personally value most here~ the actual care and effort in making someone feel genuinely seen and supported and why I prefer offering support that feels as authentic as possible. I’ll almost never respond to something I don’t have a personal voice and heart or experience for.
Literally everything else is google-able and “practical solutions” for almost anything are almost always one-Ai chat away, while using AI I think we can ask ourselves “if this person we are ‘supporting’ wanted a numbered list of “do this, do that … solutions” (often edging towards advice, which is a big no again, especially from listeners) ending with a generic ‘it will be okay’ phrase” or if they simply just want to have a safe, non-judgemental space where they feel heard and their emotions validated, in a comforting space where they are held with empathy and compassion?!
Oh and of course there’s two sides to everything. So thank youuu for also highlighting how belittling it can be for a listener (also hooman by the way) who is trying their best to support people, to be compared to a bot, I’ve often seen listeners mention this and how hurt and discouraged they feel.
At the crux of it, it really is so important to remember that all of us are hoomans here and with emotionssss (hope Noni isn’t reading this lol), whether on a listener account or a member, and it’s essential that every one looks out for each other, to be a little more kind, a little more patient and accepting too and a little more mindful in how what you say and how you say it can impact someone.

I really enjoyed everyones inputs here in regard to AI. I too feel that moderation is the key.
While I haven't overly engaged in using AI (I don't have any accounts created only did a test drive on 2 different models just for experiential learning) more of my time has been invested in reading the literature on AI that we currently have available and how it can impact us psychologically as people. Having said that, some additional thoughts for consideration are and in defense of humans as our trained active listeners.....
AI being used as a tool for emotional support really might be a bit dangerous. AI is built on affirming. What better affirmation than AI learning us, speaking how it is that we speak, nodding it's head in perfect compliance? When I think about it, (and I have thought about this quite a bit) no wonder that humans are even using AI for the boyfriend/girlfriend experience. With a lean into to the concept of Narcism, who better to fall in love with than ones self (for some people) and especially considering that loneliness has reached epidemic proportions. It really is what is happening and why AI can become the "go to" for people for support or even the greatest love affair of their life, it seems. It's simply smoke and mirrors.
It can provide confirmation bias and not every thought, idea, behavior should be confirmed. Some things and some thoughts really aren't okay. Some things just aren't right and are quite detrimental to the human experiencing them. For some, there really isn't a bunch of "Ninja's on the roof" and not everyone has Ninja's on their roof every other Tuesday or whatever the thought dujour may be. Thoughtful and careful human intervention can be needed when discussing some concepts.
Over reliance on AI is contributing to the cognitive decline of those doing so (recent study published in Time Magazine). There is less thinking for oneself, less quick thinking on your feet, loss of critical thinking skills. Lazy thinking with a half baked effort and inhibits growth and development as independent thinkers.
Just as you mentioned as well as H, AI sure does have it's purpose and I really loved how the both of you mentioned how and can, it can be used in beneficial and highly effective ways! 💡
None of what I said is in regard to Noni. I love Noni!!! ❤️ I have engaged with Noni and I adore them. There was a time around here in the past that I was really uncertain of what I should do in regard to a situation related to an experience I had when in a leadership role, and Noni showed up for me and strong.
Noni is a part of 7 cups and so I kind of "stick close to home". It's just a trust thing as I know that Noni is monitored, loved, taken care of and actively being used by precisely the right people that are able to "keep their finger on the pulse".

@Heather225 It's a shame generative AI has such a heavy strain on the environment, otherwise it'd be a lot easier to support using it as a tool. Regardless I hope human-to-human communication will always lead the forefront to our interactions- that's the best thing about this website :)
