Does 7 Cups Make Us Wiser?
I deeply enjoyed our birthday celebrations. One thing I like to do during these events is zoom out and try to see the recurring themes that pop up. Kind of like - what is this group of people saying or repeating? How can I better understand what they are communicating?
There were a number of themes that surfaced during our celebrations. One that was surprising to me was the emphasis on 7 Cups helping to make us wise. I had never thought of that before.
Below is a definition of wisdom. If we, collectively, help one another become wise or practice wisdom, then I think that is a wonderful outcome.
- Insight & Discernment: The capacity to see beneath the surface of complex situations and understand their deeper meaning or long-term consequences.
- Application of Experience: Using lessons learned from past mistakes or challenges to guide current actions.
- Prosocial Behavior: Actions directed not just at personal gain, but toward the common good and the benefit of others.
- Emotional Balance: The ability to manage uncertainty, maintain humility, and consider multiple perspective
If 7 Cups has helped you learn to be wise or to better practice wisdom, what parts of the wisdom definition feel the most accurate or resonate more with you?
Personally, I do think 7 Cups has made me wiser in many ways. Before I joined, I never realized how different people's lives and experiences could be. Spending time talking with people from all over the world has taught me that everyone carries a story, and sometimes the people who seem the happiest are quietly fighting their own battles.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is to listen before I judge. On 7 Cups, you meet people from different cultures, age groups, beliefs, and walks of life. Every conversation reminds me that there isn't always one "right" way to see a situation. Hearing different perspectives has helped me become more patient, understanding, and compassionate.
I've also learned that being kind doesn't always mean having the perfect advice. Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do is simply be present, listen without interrupting, and let someone know they aren't alone. That lesson has changed the way I interact with people both online and in real life.
The platform has also helped me reflect on my own life. Listening to others has made me appreciate the good things I have while encouraging me to keep growing as a person. It has shown me the importance of empathy, emotional resilience, and treating people with respect, even when we don't share the same opinions or experiences.
Of course, no platform automatically makes someone wise. Wisdom comes from having an open mind, being willing to learn, and taking something valuable from every conversation. If you only use 7 Cups to pass the time, you may not gain much. But if you genuinely connect with people, listen carefully, and reflect on what you learn, it can become a place where you grow emotionally and intellectually.
For me, 7 Cups has been more than just a place to chat. It's been a place where I've learned patience, empathy, gratitude, and the value of human connection. Every meaningful conversation has taught me something new, and those small lessons have added up over time. I wouldn't say it has all the answers, but it has certainly helped me become a more thoughtful, understanding, and wiser person.
@MarkChalpo thank you for this authentic reflection! You bring up a point that hasn't been brought up yet. That there are 2 sides to every story. That a person's past, cognitive biases, habits etc. all inform the way that they see something. And the other person's past, biases, habits etc. also inform how they see that exact same situation. So two people can be in a relationship or experience the same thing and see it entirely differently.
I think this is one reason why grace is so important. It is easy to have knee-jerk or quick decision on an issue or on a person - lighting fast sometimes - and it takes grace (and wisdom!) to slow things down and step back and try to see it from their perspective. If interested, I wrote this post on how to do this by using the Steel Man Technique.
And great point that how we treat others can trickle down or being woven into how we learn how to treat ourselves too. Thank you for sharing, Mark!
Its definitely made me wiser, and I feel all of these. It might be mostly the emotional balance that I feel in day-to-day, but I see things in more perspectives in general too. It's actually arguing with people that's made me realize the rest more and more. I can be a lot more level-headed and learn from arguments, sometimes even inadvertently show others how to do the same.
Prosocial behavior.

Definitely me! Over the past year I have been able to not only apply this to my practices here at 7Cups, but in everything I have been doing in my life and it's helped me so much! Our Mindfulness group I support has helped me so much and I am greatly appreciative. My experiences on 7Cups definitely improved the last year of my life emotionally and I'm so grateful!
