Deposits vs Withdrawals: How Discipline Buys Freedom
Hi everyone! I have been thinking about a paradox that is underrated and not talked about much. I first started thinking about it when I came across this quote:
"Only the disciplined are free." — Eliud Kipchoge
It’s a bit ironic, isn't it? We usually think of freedom as the ability to do whatever we want, whenever we want. But in reality, true freedom seems to come from restraint and control. It rarely feels freeing in the moment. In fact, it’s a consistent process of denying yourself the "freedom" to relax, overeat, or procrastinate to gain a higher form of freedom later. I’ve been looking at it like a trade-off:
Restricting unhealthy food/sedentary lifestyle = Greater freedom over your physical capabilities and health.
Restricting "brain rot" content = Greater freedom over your focus and ability to think clearly.
It reminds me of something a religious scholar once said: "Bearing small difficulties voluntarily prevents having to deal with big difficulties." It’s the same logic as Jordan Peterson’s idea that "Conflict delayed is conflict multiplied." Enduring the "conflict" of a workout today prevents the "conflict" of losing your mobility tomorrow. The 'conflict' of powering through a boring homework assignment is better than losing marks.
Withdrawals vs Deposits
I like to think of discipline as a financial transaction with your future self. Every choice you make is either a withdrawal or a deposit.
What is a Withdrawal?
Choosing comfort now at the expense of your future capacity. It feels good in the moment but reduces what tomorrow-you has to work with. Examples:
Skipping a workout
Picking distraction over focus
Eating purely for taste without thinking about health
Avoiding difficult conversations
Postponing important work
What is a Deposit?
Choosing short-term discomfort to increase long-term freedom. These actions feel small now but they add up over time. Examples:
Going for a walk when you do not feel like it
Choosing the healthier food option
Saving energy instead of arguing unnecessarily
Studying even when it is boring
Spending time with people who challenge you instead of just entertain you
Why It Matters
The workout today builds the body you will live in tomorrow
The food choices you make today shape your long-term health
The effort you put into studying affects your future opportunities
The people you surround yourself with influence your mindset
Important Note
No single withdrawal will break your future, and no single deposit will instantly create it. What matters is the accumulation. You want to make more deposits than withdrawals over time. That is how you build strength, skills, health, and emotional freedom
The Key Question
In this moment, am I making a withdrawal or a deposit into my future self
💬 Let’s Discuss:
Discussion Prompts
What is one way you practice discipline that gives you more freedom?
What is one deposit you can do more of?
- What is one withdrawal you want to reduce?
@Hope
What a wonderful insight 🩷🤗
Discipline is definitely under rated.
I always need to balance my time between what I have to do in my fault life, real and authentic time for myself and creating space for seven cups.
Not trying to spin too many plates and then not helping anyone.
I also need discipline in the bad weather to make sure I still get out and about and move as much as I can.
Easy making excuses 😂🩷
@Hope true! 🫶🏼 🌱 Islam is my favorite freedom, it's just wipe away my laziness and my days are more organized 🌸 I want to spend much more time reading and walking and I really want to reduce my 7cups time 🥲 😅 this is not easy! like the lady's comment above me 💌
@CecileBrieur74
Islamic practices/guidelines tend to be in great alignment with this post. Ramadan Mubarak!
@Hope thank you!!🌸
very good words of wisdom
as for me ,i dont see a way to do discipline now. My issue isnt with dicipline its that i feel overwhelmed and need to stop thinking so much about things
but i would say overthinking past and future and forgetting the moment
what can i deposit more , workouts and self care
what can i withdraw less delaying important things that needs to be done
@scorpionpolktanktree
I get that! I feel the challenge is we feel so far behind our ideal disciplined life than when you do decide to walk towards it, it feels out of reach.
That is why it helps to just focus on the actions at hand and think about whether this action is a deposit or a withdrawal. So you are essentially creating a system rather working towards a goal directly.
@Hope
i see i see , good points
@Hope
Interesting I saw this topic today. I was just discussing this type of thing with a friend. Life is always paradox. It seems all the things we like are bad for us. I think we have to see it as an investment in ourselves to be strong enough to do the right thing. For me I have a small exercise routine that I do in the morning, just enough to give me some satisfaction that I did it without it being off-putting. I indulge in some food I like but try to put a healthy twist on it like low sugar options but still satisfying. I take small steps in the right direction and know I can always take bigger ones if I choose. I'm a resistance thinker so that helps. I don't like to get sucked into what I know is bad for me.
@Hope great post!
I maintain discipline by doing things in the moment with deep work and focus. It prevents a lot of problems usually. This does not mean that I am not flexible but just means I am able to focus in the moment.
@Hope
What is one way you practice discipline that gives you more freedom?
I've made a daily run a habitual event, it helps me to control weight and boost circulation, psycholigically it keeps heath anxiety at a low beneficial level.
What is one deposit you can do more of?
Mindfulness practices to help manage emotions.
What is one withdrawal you want to reduce?
Not always eating healthily.
@RunningMachine
I have noticed a lot of runners tend to do it for the mental health benefits. I am glad you are able to keep it a routine
@Hope
It's a lifetimes passion but yes the psychological benefits have been priceless 😄
@Hope
i have never actully thought of that in this way i guess at some time discipline can feel very suffocating but other times it can give you control which buys you freedom, being able to control your brain and self is the real freedom here
What is one way you practice discipline that gives you more freedom?
ive been to" Restricting "brain rot" " and for a while now i wont say i am completely over it but i dff can say i have a lot of free time now XD wich gave me lot more time to do what i want i still watch reels but i dont dom scroll it just got boriing :0
What is one deposit you can do more of?
work out XD my body needs ittt and mindfulness
- What is one withdrawal you want to reduce?
i am willing to reduce lots of my bad habits but one by one XD
@Moonlight52
The interesting thing about doing things that help you long term is that they often feel uncomfortable or annoying in the moment. It really is a trade off.
Brain rot content is a big issue all across. I am glad you are making an effort to take ownership of your time.
@Hope honestly yess its very annoying and uncomfortable at the beginning to be discipline frustrating and for a perfectionist balance doesn't exist for them 😂

Jkk lol 😂
But frr lol I use my social 2 h a day now only of we exclud cups 💜🫶🏻😂
@Hope I feel like discipline can feel like a job that you have to do otherwise youve somehow "failed" or couldve done better, which rly isnt a good mindset. so i think if skipping workouts, eating what u want, wasting time scrolling makes you happy for a little while, but in the long term is actually ruining the chance of progress to be "better", then its probably best to like just do everything in the moment and not worry about weather its gonna make ur futre lifestyle better or worse. For example if someone has a goal to go to the gym 3 times a week and they instead inly go 2 times, they might feel bad. But really they still made an effort to go twice and that should be what we focus on, not that they spent that day of eating Mcdonalds yk? I realised this because im from nz and am very chill and can be lazy, but i also have a lot of things to look forward to like being a dance teacher or an actor or whatever, so I can also be motivated and for me to be thoses things comes with a lot of hard work (eating very healthy, dancing 24/7, studying ect.) And that is a lot of pressure and stress to always be "disciplined" so i just do what I want and go back to how i was "free" in nz and whatever happens happens and it doesn't matter weather i missed a day of discipline or didnt get the goal as long as i tried my best to be happy every moment. (This is a lot longer that i thought its hust this took a while for me to realise so its kinda hard to word) xx have a great day everyone doing what you want not worrying 🩷
@Peanut3037
I hear you. I feel like we get too emotionally invested in our ability to adhere to our routines. We see it as a win or loss in the moment to be able to do the right thing.
You are right, you don't have nail the exact number of idea workouts or meals every time. That is why we talk about withdrawals vs deposits. You just want to keep your deposits high.
I found it very interesting that the comment below by @Clio9876 does a good job of explaining how what counts as a withdrawal vs deposit changes with your days. Perhaps that can help you see this system more in alignment with your life
@Hope
In this moment, am I making a withdrawal or a deposit into my future self?
I like this question for being really flexible.
There are times when getting up and exercising is a deposit. And times when taking a break and taking it easy are a deposit. Also times when avoiding comfort food is a deposit and times when eating comfort food is a deposit.
It allows us to decide what is right for us in that moment.
@Clio9876
I really like the mention of changing nature of the deposits/withdrawals. It is also worth noting that sometimes we do trade offs. Whilst eating a healthy/strict meal can be a deposit for your health but sharing the same meal as your family can be a deposit for your relationships.
It is all really about finding balance, figuring out what matters more to you
@Hope, this sounds counter intuitive and paradoxial, but it is true. discipline builds freedom. by taking a step by step deposit.
