April 6 - First Version of Member Email Verification!

Hi Community!

I can't believe this day is finally here! Yes, today, we will start asking members to verify their email addresses! Many of you have recomended this for many years and we are excited to share that the first version of this update will go live today!

Why are we verifying member email addresses?

- More accountability

- Reduce spam

- Make the gate around 7 Cups a little stronger

- Increase overall site safety

How will it work?

1. When a new member signs up, a confirmation email is auto-sent on new account creation
2. New members will not be able to upload a profile picture till they verify their email, but they will still be able to use all other elements of the site.
3. If you have not confirmed within 48 hours you get a yellow banner at the top of your dashboard reminding you to confirm (see example below).

Once clicked, this pop-up will appear -

4. The confirmation link has the following conditions:
a. Confirmation link is good = send you to the member dashboard, where you will see "email confirmed" in green at the top.
b. Confirmation link is bad or too old = tells you to re-request confirmation

To start, the only privilege we will limit is profile pictures. The goal is to test this out and then start locking more privileges behind the email verifciation. This is a phase one and we will continue to learn and hear your feedback.

How will this update interact with older members/ members not new today?

- All members will have the opportunity to verify their email address and we encourage them to do so.

- The yellow banner will appear inviting you verify

I've also been unable to receive the verification email, despite my email being correctly displayed. I've done what you've suggested and filed a bug report (website).

@Laura

Not to worry, I managed to sort it out.

I had disabled cookies and It requires me to allow cookies on my browser to access 7 cups.

Thanks

Can you be more specific? What is confusing?

Using my member account in Safari on my iPad the button appears to do nothing at all.

Here in Chromium on Ubuntu the button appears to work and it tells me the e-mail was sent, but no e-mail has arrived. It's not in spam and it's not filtered at my end.

A while ago I unsubscribed from MailChimp in order to stop the spam from Sophia. Could that be the problem?

@Laura Thanks for this. It sounds like a positive step in the right direction.

I was wondering if email verification for listeners was already happening or in the plan.

Hey Laura! I don't know if this was intentional, but the site asked me to verify my email too, and I'm not a new member. Next step in my opinion is to find a way to only allow real emails to be used when making an account. Up to now, one could write thisisanemail@forreal.com and the site would generate an account.

Thanks for doing this, it's very important for me, now I can be more confident about answering to newbie accounts, I think it's safe to assume that people with no display picture are there to troll, unless the account was made that day.

@PenguinsCrossing Completely agree, we should only be allowed to make accounts if:

1. It's a real email

2. It's not a temporary email

@RicanGirl

After verifying, go to settings. If you're new, wait a few days.

@PenguinsCrossing

"I think it's safe to assume that people with no display picture are there to troll, unless the account was made that day." I disagree. I've been a member for several years and never changed my profile picture. I've come to associate the color with my account here, and I look for the color and letters when I'm skimming through forum posts to see where I've replied. It would be weird for me to change it. I don't like change :P

@lovingBanana5204

There's exceptions, like you, as you say, you participe in forums, have been here for a while. I meant "newbies". There's a trend to make a new account per day, well, because they are banned form their accounts for trolling.

@PenguinsCrossing Ah okay, thank you for clarifying. I didn't know so many people made new accounts so often.
