Feb 16: Forum Flagging
Is now live!
If you see something that is hurtful, abusive, spammy or not appropriate for our site. Or if you see something that needs to be edited for social media, language or triggers, please flag the post!
Our team of forum ambassadors, forum mentors will be working to review the flagged items and ensure the forum continues to be a safe and wonderful place!
I'm really happy to have this! The form was much easier than searching for a forum mentor who could make a change, but still it bothered me the form wasn't linked right there.
I'm curious though, I tested this out by pushing the flag button, but didn't go through to the next step. After hitting ok are we taken to the form, is there a box to write anything, or does it just flag the post without any notes?
@AffyAvo - no the post is hidden for you immediately and put in a review queue to be deleted, edited, or restored
This is so fantastic! Tagging in the forum team so they are all aware. :)
@Anomalia thanks for the tag! I do have a question about this though. how will we know which are flagged? I see the little flags at the bottom of the posts but is there a form or somewhere we can search for them to address them? Thanks :)
@mscoxie - there is an admin screen for reviewing flagged posts similar to the one for the feed (except that forum posts can also be edited)
@Anomalia
Does it go to the form :D
@Anomalia thank you for informing me. I read through everyone's post as I was not very clear about how to and what would happen if a post is flagged. So in short, when a post is flagged, it disappears from the tread and forum mods will edit or delete it, am I right? And If KrinkTheMellowUnicorn comes up with a form with his fantastic magical IT skills, we might get to write a little info about the post we flagged? Am I right so far ?
@faithlove1111 - My understanding (and it could be slightly wrong, so apologies if that's the case) is that when you flag, it disappears for you, but remains for others. It also goes into a queue that is reviewed by ambassadors, and likely with time, by other forum mentors, who can delete it, edit it, or approve the post as not needing a flag. Krink is looking into a couple changes, including adding a bit of a form to explain why it is flagged (for those not immediately obvious), and to make it so that only forum mentors can see that the post was flagged (to avoid this being a potential tactic for bullying).
Hope that helps!
@Anomalia thanks for clarifying :)
@mscoxie @Anomalia @faithlove1111
Yes, that's about right. Any time you flag a forum or feed post it is hidden immediately for you (but reloading the page would bring it back, fwiw), and it is added to a queue for review.
I think now only forum mentors will see if a post has already been flagged at least once, and yes we will try to add an optional explanation field to the flow in the future, as soon as we can.
@Anomalia
Thanks lovely for the tag, it's very nice and useful!
This is awesome!!! ♥ I'm so excited to see how this helps keep our forums safe ( ノ◕ヮ◕ )ノ*:・゚✧
Hey! That's an interesting thing to have.
I see its really close to the upvote option so maybe it would be a good idea to have some options there besides yes/no. Like 'why do you find this inappropriate?' and with 2-3 options. Like when we block someone.
I think that would make it easier for the back-end team to sort all the reports. I'm assuming were gonna have lots of reports at first that might not even be really inappropriate... Until we'll get used with it. :)
But great job with this improvement for our forums. Thank you team!!!! :)
@cristiana33 I flagged your post just so I could see what would happen.
It shows that it has been flagged which is nice. There is nothing after the ok, it would have been nice to have had the ability to type a bit of info first, even if it's not required.
After flagging the post did disappear until I refreshed as well.
@AffyAvo
Oh wow it shows for everyone that the post has been flagged :O
I'm not sure how I feel about that though
@MonBon Can someone give confirmation on that, and it's not just because of your position?
I don't like the idea of it being visible to everyone, especially without knowing the why. With the form it wasn't just about inappropriate posts, it was for things in the wrong area, links that don't work, etc.
@MonBon yes that is not nice to put it so visible for everyone :\
@cristiana33 I agree with this 100%. Another awesome update!
Tagging in @KrinkTheMellowUnicorn to see if he help answer some of the questions about this. :)
Yeah I don't really think they everyone should be able to see that... if we get duplicate reports we get duplicate reports, but there's no need to point it out for everyone :-/
@MonBon - this feedback is helpful. we took a stab at how it should work and I'm hearing some good suggestions. Does this sound right:
1 - don't show that a post has been flagged OR only show this info to forum mods
2 - include an (optional?) field in the confirmaton dialog to give more context for why flagged
anything else?
@affyAvo @anomalia ?
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn I would just add something to the initial pop up about inappropriate content. Something like or the need for editing/movement.
I think this is intended to be more than just flagging negative material right? This is the go-to for the wrong section or something like that too? If I have the intention wrong, no need for this change!
@AffyAvo - it was intended more as the equivalent of modding in the feed, as a way to more easily deal with problematic content
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn
Imo it would be good to be visible only to forum mentors so that if more people see same thing, to be able to understand it has already been flagged. So if everyone sees it it means the post can't be flagged more than once right?
@cristiana33 - no it can definitely be flagged more than once and potentially deleted automatically (with a chance for recovery) if flagged n times (but we don't do anything automatic like that yet).
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn - I think that's all I see so far, but I'm sure once I see the back end I'll have more thoughts. :)
Thanks again to you and the team!
@MonBon put it public can encourage people to flag it just for annoying, too
@TortueDesBois - we've updated it now so that only forum mentors see that a post has been flagged
cc @MonBon
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn fabulous, you rock
@TortueDesBois - thank you, tortoise of the woods!
Will this be introduced to the app as well? Or just desktop site for now?
@RebeccaEmily - definitely plan to add it to the app. how soon depends partly on demand :)
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn I was wondering this too. Because I'm usually on the app, I use the "popular" and "new" tabs a lot, so I see spam posts quite often, and I usually find it too much of a bother to scour the rooms for a forum mod. So having this on the app would be a great help :)
@Liz1000 - good to know, thanks! we will get to it as soon as we can!
Let's get it working as we want on the site and then we can replicate it more easily on the app, without having to tweak both multiple times.
amazing !!!
Wow. I love this so much. Thanks for the cool update and making the forums a better place. #forumteamrules ;) <3
This is awesome! I hope the forums are much more supportive as a result ^-^
