Guest Account update Live on Monday 11/12
Hi All,
We announced in this thread that we will be removing guest accts access. This is one step in our continued efforts to make 7 Cups safer. We know this update has mixed feedback - some of you are for the update & others are against it.
We hear your feedback and want to work together to continue to problem solve. To this end, we are working on an update that will allow trusted members to generate a scrambled username that will allow them to talk to listeners more anonymously. This feature will take some time to develop but it is in the works.
How does this update work?
When a member begins the acct creation process, they will be prompted to verify their email ID. They will be sent a 4 digit code which they will use to verify their email id.
We ask for your patience and understand as we make this change. And we will do our best to answer your questions in this forum thread!
@Laura - so what exactly will be the change on Monday?
@AffyAvo
It means every member who signs up will be required to verify their email id
@Laura - again??? I mean didn't we do that upon signing up for Member in the first place? Hmm... Platy
@cyanPlatypus6370
If i recall correctly, verifying was necessary for forum and group support chats, but not 1-on-1
That was not my point, but thank you @MonBon.
@cyanPlatypus6370
Oh, I apologize if I misunderstood you <3
@Laura
Doesthat mean that members will be allowed to have more than one active account - their " trusted " one , and their new scrambled names one that they can use for anonimity?
@Ayla
The scrambled name will not generate a new acct. It will be just one acct. :)
@Laura
Keeping the same account has a side effect of retaining the chat history and age, etc other details.....
A listener will know that I have talked to them before even if I scramble my babe because my messages with them will still be there.....(now do not talk about deleting messages instantaneously, that is simply not an option).
@Laura
Hello, Laura, thank you for your reply.
To my understanding, members will keep their original account, but they will get a temporary "scrambled name" which they can use if they want to chat anonymously. Well known members, however, are also easily recognised by their profile picture and bio, too. That means they should always update those if they want to be fully anonymous.
I have a few other questions, which I think would concern all members regarding this change.
- If a member receives a warning in a group support room on their scrambled name, would the warning remain on their actual account / real name?
- Same goes with muting, if a member gets muted on a scrambled name would that reflect on their real account?
-If a member gets blocked by a listener on a temporary name, would they still be able to contact that listener on their real account?
I think it's important for all members to know that, in order for harmful behaviours to be avoided.
Thank you for your time.
@Ayla
From my understanding, the scrambled name for right now would only be for 1-on-1 chats, so to answer your questions:
- If a member receives a warning in a group support room on their scrambled name, would the warning remain on their actual account / real name? Not applicable
- Same goes with muting, if a member gets muted on a scrambled name would that reflect on their real account? Not applicable
- If a member gets blocked by a listener on a temporary name, would they still be able to contact that listener on their real account? No. The system would block your account. There is not a temporary account and a real account, there's a real account with the option to scramble your username when making a 1-on-1 connection so it's as if you are a guest, but this function is not possible without being signed into an account.
@MonBon
Thank you, Mon, that makes sense. For some reason I thought it would also be included for the group chatrooms. Either way, I think it is going to be a good addition to the new guest account update. Thanks for your time.
@Laura
Long live 7Cups, 7Cups is dead.
@Laura I personally don't like this update, though I myself have a member account, I use guest accounts to talk to listeners because many people know me by my member username. I used to refer people to 7cups by saying 'dont worry, you won't have to go through registration and stuff, you can directly connect to listeners and if you like, then become a member' no more.
@Tanushree11
Seconded.
@Tanushree11 Yeah I feel like it could be a minor obstacle for someone who just wants to chat and not really wanting to join 7 Cups. In other words, if registration is required, it could decrease the likelihood of people ending up getting help because they might not want to register.
@wishfulrainbow yes exactly. And this is happening for real. There's a great decrease in number of requests
I will hold my opinion until the update goes live and we see it in action. I do like the scramble idea for the usernames. It may also just be good to have the option to display name as anonymous and might be less work than providing each user with a scrambled name. @Laura
How is this gonna fix anything? If someone wants to harass and troll they''ll simply do it as members. Besides anyone can get a temporary email as a member, you're not more sure of the person.
It is not going to fix anything in the community. The reason for doing it must be something else. I'm not even sure what it means—it's now the 13th, but when I log out of this listener account I still have a guest account.
@FeministVegan
@RarelyCharlie
It should prompt you to create an account if you try to use the Connect now option or select an online listener. The guest accounts are disabled.
Note to self; This thread
@Laura I agree, I also have a thought, maybe 7 cups allow listeners to give reviews to members but only listeners can see it. so before we pick 1-1 chat, we can see how these members behave based on reviews from previous listeners, so that we can anticipate. but of course there are pros and cons. but anyway it was just a thought. thanks for reading :)
