Holding onto or clinging to experiences we had but have lost can make the pain drag on for a long time. Letting go is not easy but when we do there is a big relief from suffering.

Participation question:

What things, thoughts or feelings that you are holding onto that would free you if you could let go of them?

What benefits would letting them go bring to you and other people in your life?

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

What things, thoughts or feelings that you are holding onto that would free you if you could let go of them? The thinking about past mistakes and how I could have done things differently.

What benefits would letting them go bring to you and other people in your life? I would not be as worried or as anxious and feel better about myself and others.

@amiablePeace77 this is a  tough question. The feelings I would like to get rid of is, shame and guilt, but I believe that would be impossible. I guess if I was able to get rid of those feelings, I'd be able to accept myself better.

@Tinywhisper11 I hear you. I feel shame and guilt for some things I did that were not my fault and I have had to look at those and say could I have changed that situation. Did I have a choice? If I was forced by circumstances to experience what I experienced, I try to let go of those feelings. It is not easy but why blame myself for something I did not even make a conscious choice to do?

I'd like to let go of how I feel about the relationship my (adult) child has with his partner.  I don't like the relationship and I don't like some of the negative things that have come/can come from it.

What benefits would letting them go bring to you and other people in your life?

If I let go and accept that I don't have to like this person, that my son is doing what he thinks is best right now, and that he's smart enough to eventually figure out that this is not the right person for him, I'd have a lot less worry and anxiety, and I'd have a better relationship with him.

@thoughtfulmomma

I think usually parents always want to protect their children but it's not possible all the time. Letting go and trusting in his wisdom seems to have great benefits for you.

I just wish I had a secretary in my life. Someone who'd keep an eye on all administrative and financial stuff.

@Fradiga

When you wrote that what popped up in my mind was Alexa/Echo. Would that be an option?

@amiablePeace77

It would not be. The problem is more a question of responsibility. If any of those Echo, Alexa and Siri reminded me, I would just feel worse about those chores.

What things, thoughts or feelings that you are holding onto that would free you if you could let go of them?

They're mostly unconscious so I don't know.

What benefits would letting them go bring to you and other people in your life?

I mean obviously there would be many benefits.

@communicativePond1728

It can feel confusing when you react in a way and do not understand why. It helps some people to sit down quietly and just write down all the thoughts and feelings which come up not matter what they are. Those can lead to hidden emotions which need to come to the surface.
