Heat Stress

When it's really hot, it's difficult to think clearly.

Spikes in temperatures can elevate cortisol levels and trigger stress responses and affect our cognitive function and productivity at work, school, and home.

Recognize the Symptoms of Heat Illness:

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache.

A heat stroke is a medical emergency — look for confusion, dry skin, rapid pulse, and high body temperature

Participation question:

How do you make sure that your body recovers and regulates its temperature effectively when exposed to high heats?

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

I make sure that I drink enough water. Drinking fruit juices also helps.

How do you make sure that your body recovers and regulates its temperature effectively when exposed to high heats?

Focus on other things, specifically things I can control. Staying hydrated, keeping myself cool, things like that for example.

@amiablePeace77  How do you make sure that your body recovers and regulates its temperature effectively when exposed to high heats?

I try to find a cool spot and a fan. I wash my face and arms with cool water. I do not over exert myself.

I often work outside. I have a tendency to physically push myself, especially if I'm almost finished with something. I'll tell myself I'll take as break as soon as I finish up. I'm not a big fan of drinking water either.

I had heat exhaustion twice this summer. It took a couple days afterwards until I felt better.

Drink water and take frequent breaks. Take a cool shower if needed or sit somewhere with AC

Hydration and taking breaks in the shade. If you are extremely hot, do not go directly inside to the cool air conditioning. Cool off in the shade first.

@courageouspanda2006

Thank you for sharing this tip! There are many benefits of cooling off first that I did not know but learned when I googled "Why to cool off the body first before using aircon".

@amiablePeace77 Carrying water that has electrolytes in it is I think the best way to lower the chances of heat illness because you are giving your body what it most likely looses from the heat. Also using an umbrella if you are going to be walking, yes hats can work but I find that umbrellas have a better way of keeping the constant heat of the sun off of you
