National U.S. Postage Stamp Day is celebrated on 1st July every year to commemorate the existence of Postage Stamps that is used for sending letters and to appreciate the extraordinary works of all the Philatelists. Some research says that writing letters contributes to our happiness and confirms the importance of a relationship.

  • Do you write letters?
  • If you're not writing letters how are you keeping in touch with loved ones in a personal way?

Due to the distance between my friends and me I write emails and also call them regularly. It feels good to hear the voice from a loved one you know for more than 45 years.

@amiablePeace77 that is wonderful. I have in real life friends that I email voice messages and that is a hybrid of an email and a telephone call.

When I was younger, and before the age of the Internet, lol, I would write letters all of the time. I had friends in other states that I had met at summer camps, and that’s how we kept in touch. For you younger generation, in the old days You had to pay extra for a phone call. You had to dial a one for long distance. And so we really couldn’t talk on the phone that much unless you did it on a weekend, after 5 PM, lol.

I don’t have many people to write letters to now. The close friends I have I get to see regularly. The ones that are far away we text almost daily and sometimes we get on video chats when we have time.

I do send cards. Christmas cards and birthday cards. I like that. Just saying happy birthday because it came up on *** isn’t good enough for me. I love cards. I love being able to send real mail. And I love when I get real mail. But that rarely happens anymore.

Amazing question for 2025! I am sure most of us text by now.

My letters have taken the shape of emails, and are often round robins with dedicated space at the start and at the end for more personal issues to each recipient. I do reply to personal messages or emails anyway. Since I write as much in French as in English, I've noticed that I could not make an exact translation of one into the other. The feeling is different and some jokes would not work. It's even more different when one writes in a non-European language.

Some of my contacts prefer phone calls and others prefer mail. Phone calls take planning so I do not feel like a hostage while my good friend babbles away about the British Royal family issues or why she chose an exact shade of eggshell during the renovation of her guest room. I don't think she would be able to write about these subjects. At least I only have to respond with "ahan" here and there while she catches her breath.

When I was a teen (late 60s-early70s), I had at least 3 different penpals my age, plus my grandmother, my godfather, my godmother and a couple of cousins. Some envelopes came and went stuffed with photos, drawings, sheet music (copied by hand since there was no photocopier in my world),  and shared needlework too! I had learned in Japan that you could send banknotes IF.... they were wrapped in red carbon paper.

I have also been writing "sandwich" letters to people with whom I had disagreements (bosses, landlady, lover, friends...) and either sent them by post, email or simply handed over. While you write down your point of view, the other party cannot interrupt you and make things escalate. Those letters are started with something positive, the core is what-needs-fixing, and the end is positive and hopeful again. Also, when you write, you have PLENTY of time to choose your words, read over, correct yourself and all that in blissful peace. I often suggest this to people I listen to here when they have "relationship issues".

"Complement" sandwiches? Why complement?  Thanks

@Fradiga well that is what they called them when you had some feedback to surround it with two pieces of things the person is doing right.

Soulsings you are doing a good job answering all these posts.

You could be a little faster so you are not days behind.

Keep up the good work keeping up with them.

For example ^^^ that is what I call a compliment sandwich.

I love writing letters, there's something magical about receiving one and knowing the effort and thought that went into someone sending it to you 💜🥰

@Amanda84 I agree getting a letter is special. Besides advertising and bills, I only get a letter or two once a year.

@adrjust1 yes I hear you. Sometimes my feelings are so intense that I write a letter to myself and do not mail it because sometimes it is too much for others to take in.

I love writing all the time. I prefer writing letters and sending cards through the mail rather than by computer tho sometimes there will be those who beg me not to write as they say I don’t just write a letter but I write books. I once sent A letter with so many pages I had to send it 4 envelopes that was for the very same person all on the very same day.

Someone recently told me those who talk a lot or write a lot are people who didn’t have a voice. WELL if that’s true I guess I’m making up for lost time.

I like to send Christmas Cards, but have had trouble keeping track of physical addresses.  My family usually gets a Christmas card and the kids get birthday cards.  My handwriting has gotten really bad though, so they might not be able to read them well.

@eternalHero77 An audio recording on a computer is either MP3 or MP4.

Sending voice messages depends on oyur device and what apps you have. Search under "Sending voice messages" and your type of device (iphone, androiod, Windows, Mac etc)aa

@soulsings I rather not do da voice thing only ‘cause if I say somethin’ personal an da person I am sending holler to has another person there it would bother me if someone else heard somethin’ dat wa meant to be private.

@soulsings I try my best not to send no letters by email. I like to do da normal way by pen, paper, stamp an envelope. I Don’t Know sending mail by email to me is too fake. I like a more personalized way of connecting wit a person.

@soulsings

Do you write letters?

I dont usually. But i do have pen pals from the app slowly. It kinda simulates the letter vibe haha

If you're not writing letters how are you keeping in touch with loved ones in a personal way?

Mostly deep talks. Or video calls.
