I do try to allow myself unwinding time every evening by dancing/working out and/or doing familiar comfort activities with my partner and our bird. it's not easy though - self-care is a commitment but it's the best thing you can ever give yourself.
@Heather225 when I exercise sometimes our bird tries to mimic the exercises!
@soulsings
that is really cute and as someone who had a bird who'd bounce wildly when i was on the trampoline back in the day while yelling "wow!" i can definitely imagine that lol
@Heather225 there used to be an ad for Comcast and the man, the woman, the kid, the dog , the cat all said "Wow!"
The bird heard that for a week in Florida. On the car trip back from there all of a sudden we heard this "Wow" in the back seat. The bird learned it well even with the intonation.

@Tinywhisper11
😂😂😂 pretty sure mine screams this in Birb
@Heather225 😂😂😂😂

What do you find helps you calm down? How often do you allow yourself time to unwind?
A smoker has an easy answer to the first question. Otherwise, sighing is the first thing anyone does for relief in tough situations. Then maybe going through a routine, if you learned one. I am generally a person who does not burst out in reaction to whatever and needs to calm down. Au contraire, people sometimes wished I was not so calm.
The second question should not be asked of a retiree already relaxing in this green countryside full of history. My whole goal daily is to be as unwinded as I can. I unwind when everything is well enough. I unwind reading. I unwind looking at shorts (videos!). It's not necessarily a healthy way to unwind but it works. If the activities are acceptable and give me any pleasure that day, I will have unwound enough then. If we go back to the smoking bit, I guess I have 10 to 15 more opportunities throughout the day.
I had very interesting therapy while I was undergoing a 3-year treatment for an already metastasized cancer. I was not denied tobacco, but something else was advised which helped a lot with anxieties, especially in the evening as one's mind races while trying to go to sleep. I never thought I would do this, but... my doctor was right. I can also watch a movie, play sudoku or a jigsaw puzzle. Never watched (or contributed to) racy videos
For some people, herb tea is it, of course. And it is culturally more correct. Those who will pour themselves a stiff one are also covered by their culture. Others will take a vacation or mentally put themselves in pasture. Others will lie down, whether with willing company or not.
What about those who just can't unwind? It is in their nature to seek the tight winding rather. They are only happy if they are dynamos. I have a friend from elementary school like this. She is just restless.
Somehow, why has this "unwinding" become a thing these days? Our ancestors may have had celebratory moments in which they would go loose, but they worked way more than we do generally.
@Fradiga I'm retired too ❤ so pretty much every thing I do in my daily life, makes me feel happy and relaxed 🙂❤ except for when I think, thinking is bad for us, and we shouldn't do it😂

A chat with a good friend, if available or meditation and exercise help me to calm down. Usually I take time in the evening to unwind by stretching and watching a movie.
@amiablePeace77 I am so glad, you enjoy watching movies, my friend.
@soulsings I find that tea helps sometimes. But mediation is my go to.
@calmMango9611 correction meditation.
@calmMango9611 thanks for clarifying.
I do that all the time when I spell meditation and drop the first T! lol
@soulsings Thanks for being so understanding of me, my friend. It means so much to me.
@calmMango9611 after I take my night time meds, my carers always make me a cup of tea to relax with before I lie down too 😁❤
@Tinywhisper11 That is really nice of them. Do you enjoy drinking tea?
@calmMango9611 they are very nice to me ❤ I get treated like a princess here 😁❤ I like tea during evening and before bed, it helps me relax. But in the mornings coffee coffee coffee😋

@soulsings I try to do breathing exercises
It's a good practice. This helps me out a lot too
@soulsings my life is very boring as you probably know by now😂 but most of my daily activities relax me, make me feel happy and content. And I have a routine in the evenings before I lie down, including music, tea, candles, pretty lights. I'm generally so relaxed, I out do a sloth😎❤
@soulsings Keeping my hands busy helps calm my mind. Puzzles and word searches or video games but I really enjoy building and making things too. And doing wood carvings
@mytwistedsoul I am so glad.
@calmMango9611 Thank you 😊
@mytwistedsoul you do wood carvings😍😍😍 that's amazing.
@Tinywhisper11 Thank you! 😊
@mytwistedsoul I like doing things also. It gives me a feeling of accomplishing something.

- What do you find helps you calm down?
- How often do you allow yourself time to unwind?
I was told that because I am an introvert, I need to have quiet time alone to recharge. So at work, I try to take little breaks alone and in silence.
I try to unwind for at least an hour after coming home from work.
@soulsings
- What do you find helps you calm down?
Sleep. Watching mindless (non work-related) YouTube videos, usually cats, nature stuff. And occasionally, playing my guitar, when feeling angst or just out of sorts, and videos just aren't helping me calm. And taking 'sick' days from work, when necessary.
- How often do you allow yourself time to unwind
Every day. In my line of work, it is needed. I feel grateful I have 'accumulated' sick hours to take, if needed ( or extra vacation hours, if needed), due to working under stressful conditions (healthcare, LTC, Dementia). If it weren't for that....well.....all I know is that I feel grateful (even if I pay through the nose out of my pay). It is there for self care.
