@amiablePeace77 @Tinywhisper11 tolerance let me give you the definition I find:

tolerant /tŏl′ər-ənt/ adjective

Inclined to tolerate the beliefs or behavior of others; forbearing. "a tolerant attitude."

Able to withstand or endure an adverse environmental condition. "plants tolerant of extreme heat and drought."

What does it mean to be tolerant to you?  People who can withstand suffering and pain without losing a sense of well-being.

Is it about putting up with things or more? It is about not reacting in a negative way.

What helped you to you develop tolerance?

My enemies taught me to be tolerant. My first reaction to them was anger and feeling like a victim. But I did not like the way anger made me feel nor being a victim either. Eventually I realized that even though I did not condone their actions, I could see that they shared in common a desire to be happy and to be free from dissatisfaction. I began to see that they were suffering and creating more misery by their actions. I could not harden my heart any longer. So I became tolerant of them because I knew it would not be forever.

It is a wonderful thing when we can see our enemies or people who hurt us with an open heart and see their suffering too. It does not mean to agree with what they did or make them unaccountable.

I'm actually finding myself being less tolerant. 2020 seemed to be a catalyst for creating dichotomies along with a rise of misinformation.

My time, focus, energy and patience all have limits.

I do try to keep an open mind and listen to viewpoints that differ from mine, but when it's reasonable. I find myself tuning out, turning off, not bothering to explain, etc. more often now than 6 years ago because the unreasonable has increased so much. Unfortunately filtering that out isn't perfect, so I probably do miss giving some that are reasonable that previously would have gotten my attention.

I do try to keep in mind who is sharing the information. I know a wonderful sweet person who shared misinformation when I was bombarded with it. I wasn't mean but blunt with just shutting it down. Her response certainly reminded me of who I was dealing with and I ended up responding back in the same way I would have before. I try to keep this In mind to avoid doing this again with the people I want to actually converse with.

Unfortunately with where a lot of technology is currently I think it may be a while before I can reduce my filters.

@Tinywhisper11 Thanks! I do try and Intention matters a lot. I think here the majority of people (and people in general) tend to have good intentions.

It's those with money and power who can amplify all that other noise that leads me to have a higher filter. Sometimes those shields are still up when it's a friendly person who comes by (even moreso online I find because there's where most of that noise is).

@AffyAvo yeah power can destroy people, groups of people. I've was unfortunately stuck suffering from peoples choices/power for years. It's not easy to get past. But we can't let them rule out lives, there are more good people than bad. Don't underestimate how much you do for people, your one of the good ones ❤

In becoming more tolerant i think it is important to consider how another person see things.. some we can find common ground and work from there.... in other situations i just chose to walk away from drama or chose to disengage until you found some perspective.

Funny thing is about a year ago i started to work with someone polar opposite from myself in sharing in small doses we have truly found common ground and can see from each others perspective which has been like practicing tolerance.  like a gym for tolerance.

@amiablePeace77 ok I think I understand the question now. My tolerance for pain I think is pretty good, I kinda became numb to pain when I was 11 years old. But there past few years it's been a different kind of pain, I think I cope pretty well with it ❤ my tolerance towards others, I try to keep a open mind always, cause you never truly know what someone else is going through/feeling. And I want to spread the same love and kindness I have been shown theese past few years ❤ I've learnt a lot about people through 7 cups, and continue to learn from them ❤

I hope this newer different kind of pain will lessen, glad though that you feel being able to cope well.

"Keep an open mind always, cause you never truly know what someone else is going through/feeling" - This is a beautiful way to approach others!

@amiablePeace77 Yeah, definitely more than just putting up with stuff. It's about knowing where to draw the line. Once I started setting those boundaries, I could handle things better without feeling like I was just tolerating everything. It made me more balanced and less frustrated.  I got clearer on what I would and wouldn't accept, it made it easier to be tolerant without letting things slide too far. Hope this helps <3

Tolerance is accepting other’s humanity,

Part of our humanity are our faults, our differences and our similarities.

The minute you look at people and all you see is their humanity you will accept them. Not saying that you have to love them but just accept.

@amiablePeace77 I used to have a lot of tolerance and most of it would turn to silent tears but I find myself being less and less tolerant now, which I think is a positive step forward. Kindness and tolerance used to feel the same until I realised some people needed to get back what they were giving and some situations were better left well enough alone ^^

I can relate to what you are saying. Years ago, I thought being kind and accepting or excusing what others do, finding always a reason for their action was the way to go but I had to realize it was more or less letting others step over me. We can be tolerant and set firm boundaries at the same time.

Hi Peace, I learned to develop tolerance by understanding, and finding peace within my self to accept people for who they are. This isn't to say I don't feel frustrated, upset, overwhelmed, etc. Because I do. Especially while practicing tolerance. But learning to understand (as best I can) accept, and learn that others issues don't have to stem from myself , have helped me.develop tolerance. I struggle with this sometimes. But I am recently trying to remember and set boundaries, while also accepting others for who they are, and looking deeper within those people . And In myself , so that I can be able to tolerate more, without breaking myself down In the mean time.

I think you have chosen a good path to walk, it's nice to accept others for who they are but it's also important to set boundaries to prevent breaking down yourself.

Is it about putting up with things or more? What helped you to you develop tolerance?

It seems it means everything to me, 😀 particularly on 7cups. Intolerant or narrow-minded folks are found among the fearful, insecure and ignorant with little life experience. Exceptions for those who have good cause to become intolerant in certain situations, for instance when you are raising kids.

I see exceptions to this, as I am rather intolerant of a lot of noise. I get tired in loud parties, for instance. I do not mind the noise level of a symphony or a large choir or folk music, but anything else... I use earplugs. I am also riled up with situations of injustice and mobbing.

My life has taken me to a lot of different places where I stayed a long time and picked up on various wisdoms and thought processes. The word "tolerance" does not have the same connotations in all languages, if it exists at all.

I am in a quandary sometimes, but this is not a yes-no proposition. There are, fortunately, degrees of tolerance.

@Fradiga

I agree with you Fradiga, we can be tolerant with some things but not at all with others. Mobbing or injustice is something I am neither tolerant about.

Tolerance and the concept of "boundaries" also intersect somewhere. Tolerance is somewhat more flexible
