♡ things we pretend don't hurt ♡
hi everyone! 🤍
i've been thinking a lot lately about how much people can be struggling without anyone around them ever really knowing. how easy it can be to smile, laugh, make conversation, show up for other people, and carry on with your day while there's a whole other world of feelings happening inside you that nobody gets to see.
i think sometimes we become so good at pretending we're okay that even the people closest to us don't realize when we're hurting. we learn how to laugh things off, change the subject, say "it's fine" when it really isn't, and reassure everyone else that we're doing okay because explaining what's actually going on feels like too much.
and sometimes, we do it so often that people stop asking. not necessarily because they don't care, but because we've become so good at making our pain look like something that doesn't exist. ♡
🌷 ───────────── 🌷
☁️ the things we carry quietly
i think one of the hardest parts of struggling with your mental health is how lonely it can feel, even when you're surrounded by people.
you can have friends, family, people to talk to, and still feel like nobody truly sees what's happening inside your head. you can spend an entire day around other people and come home feeling completely alone. you can be the person everyone turns to when they're having a hard time, yet struggle to find the words to tell anyone when you're the one who needs support.
sometimes you don't even know how to explain it yourself. you just know that something hurts, that you're tired in a way sleep doesn't seem to fix, or that the smallest things feel heavier than they should.
and there's something especially difficult about going through something that other people can't see. when there's no obvious sign that you're struggling, it can feel like you have to keep proving to yourself that your pain is real. you might even find yourself minimizing it because someone else has it worse, or because you can still get out of bed, go to work, answer messages, and get through the day.
but just because you're functioning doesn't mean you're not struggling. just because you can smile doesn't mean you're happy. and just because you haven't told anyone how much something hurts doesn't mean it hasn't hurt you.
you don't have to fall apart in front of someone for your pain to count. 🫂
🌷 ───────────── 🌷
🩷 the masking we don't always talk about
sometimes masking looks like being the funny friend because making everyone laugh is easier than explaining why you're sad.
sometimes it looks like being the strong one because you're afraid of what might happen if people see you struggling.
sometimes it looks like saying "don't worry about me" when you desperately wish somebody would.
sometimes it looks like pretending a comment didn't hurt, pretending you aren't disappointed, pretending you don't miss someone, or acting like something doesn't matter because admitting how much it matters feels too vulnerable.
maybe you've learned to smile when someone says something that breaks your heart. maybe you've learned to act unbothered when you feel rejected. maybe you've learned to pull away before anyone notices how badly you want them to stay.
and maybe, somewhere along the way, you started believing that keeping everything to yourself was easier than letting someone see just how much you're hurting.
i think we sometimes forget how exhausting it is to constantly manage how other people perceive us while we're already trying so hard to manage what's happening inside us.
it's exhausting to be hurting and still feel responsible for making everyone else comfortable with your pain. it's exhausting to always say the right thing, keep the peace, avoid being a burden, and make sure nobody worries too much about you.
and you deserve moments where you don't have to do any of that.
moments where you can admit that something hurt you. where you can say that you're disappointed, lonely, overwhelmed, or scared without feeling like you have to apologize for having feelings.
you deserve to be cared for even when you're not cheerful. you deserve support even when you can't explain yourself perfectly. you deserve people who make room for your difficult feelings, not just the parts of you that are easy to be around. 🤍
🌷 ───────────── 🌷
🌙 it's okay to admit that something hurts
maybe there's something you've been trying really hard to convince yourself you're over.
maybe you're still hurt by something someone said to you. maybe you're grieving a relationship that changed, a friendship that ended, or a version of yourself you miss. maybe you're disappointed in where life has taken you, or you're struggling with the feeling that everyone else is moving forward while you're just trying to get through the week.
maybe you're tired of being strong. maybe you're tired of explaining yourself. maybe you're tired of pretending that things don't affect you because you don't want anyone to think you're too sensitive.
whatever it is, i hope you know that you don't have to dismiss your own feelings just to make them easier for other people to understand.
you can be understanding of someone's intentions and still acknowledge that they hurt you. you can love someone and still feel disappointed by them. you can be grateful for the good things in your life and still admit that some things are really hard right now.
two things can be true at once.
you can be making progress and still have difficult days. you can be healing and still feel hurt by what happened. you can be strong and still need someone to hold space for you.
you don't have to pretend something didn't hurt just because you're trying to move forward from it.
sometimes the first step toward feeling a little lighter is simply allowing yourself to be honest about what you're carrying. 🌷
🌷 ───────────── 🌷
💭 a gentle question for you...
What are you pretending doesn't hurt?
you don't have to share anything you're not comfortable with, and there's no pressure to have an answer. maybe it's something you've been keeping to yourself for a long time, something you laugh about even though it makes you sad, or something you wish someone would notice without you having to explain it.
maybe it's a little thing that has been weighing on you more than people realize. maybe it's something much bigger.
whatever comes to mind, your feelings are allowed to take up space here. you don't have to make your answer sound positive, turn it into a lesson, or pretend you've already made peace with it.
sometimes we just need somewhere to admit, "this actually hurts me, and i'm tired of acting like it doesn't."
and if nobody has reminded you lately, you don't have to carry everything quietly to be deserving of kindness. 🤍
🌷 ───────────── 🌷
💌 one last little reminder
if you're reading this and things have been feeling a little too heavy lately, please know that you don't have to go through it all alone.
my PMs are always open if you ever need a chat, a place to vent, or simply someone to listen without judgment. you don't need to have the right words, and you don't need to wait until things get really bad to reach out.
sometimes it's enough to start with a simple "hey, i'm not doing too great today."
please be gentle with yourselves, friends. you never know how much someone might be carrying behind their smile, and that includes you. you deserve the same patience, understanding, and compassion that you so freely give to everyone else. 🫂
🌷 ───────────── 🌷
you don't have to pretend you're okay to deserve a little tenderness. ♡

Not so sure about pretending, life hurts.
@RunningMachine
Sometimes life just hurts, and there isn’t always a way to pretend otherwise. It can be exhausting trying to navigate everything life throws at us, especially when it feels like there’s no break from it all. You don’t have to pretend to be okay or put a name to what hurts. Your feelings are valid, and you deserve space to acknowledge them, too. Sending you so much gentleness. You don’t have to carry everything alone.
@LexListens2025
Sometimes there isn't an obvious solution, i'm hampered from enjoying life the way I used to due to health issues and struggling to feel motivated for the future. I'm a fighter and refuse to give in, hopefully I'll find a spark soon.
@LexListens2025
Thank you Lexxxxx! 😊 ❤️
Your forum post deeply resonates with me. This is so incredibly well written, you are quite astute! I love too, how you listed so many different reasons why it is that one might behave this way.
Many times someone might really want to share how it is that they are feeling. Some may have the capacity to open up and share and there could be lots of reasons as to why they don't and you have mentioned so many of them!
Something additional could be upbringing, childhood abuse and or neglect. In some family situations, children aren't allowed to have needs, wants, wishes. To mention they are even hungry or thirsty could come with harsh consequences, extreme abuse. To mention they are feeling bad, sick, are in need of medical care can create mocking, being called horrible names or physical violence. To cry can lead to situations of "stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about". Asking for clothing or school supplies that a teacher has warned you about not having, well, horrific consequences can happen for that too.
Sometimes adults can work through a lot of the past parental treatment, as they know it was wrong and not their fault, however something still lingers. They can reach out, ask for help and support and if others aren't careful with them, they will retreat as to not be a burden and feel shut down. If they don't receive empathy or help for a situation, they see it as adding insult to injury and question why is that they even tried to begin with. Just like in childhood, they learn to just stop.
These, many times, are the peace keepers that you mentioned. They do things for the common good and sadly, sometimes it ends up being self abandonment. If it goes on for too long in whatever type of situation, they simply shrivel on the vine, retreat entirely and vanish and never return to whatever situation they were a part of no matter how much they initially cared about it. Self preservation.
Thank you again for such an amazing forum post and all of them that you provide for us! 😇
*high fives* 😊 and *hugs* ❤️
@SparkyGizmo
Awww, thank you so much for such a thoughtful and heartfelt response! 🥹❤️ You’ve added such an important perspective, and I’m so glad you felt comfortable sharing it here. You’re so right that our upbringing and the way our needs were treated as children can have such a lasting impact on how safe we feel opening up as adults. When someone has learned that expressing their needs leads to punishment, rejection, or being made to feel like a burden, it makes so much sense that they might struggle to ask for help later in life. 💗
The part about peacekeeping turning into self-abandonment really stands out to me, too. Sometimes people become so accustomed to putting everyone else first that they slowly lose sight of their own needs, until withdrawing feels safer than continuing to reach out. Everyone deserves to be met with empathy, patience, and understanding, especially when it has taken so much courage to speak up in the first place. 🫂
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and for your incredibly kind words about my posts. It means so much to know that these conversations resonate with people and create space for perspectives like yours. Sending you the biggest hugs right back, and a high five! 🖐️❤️🥹

Not so sure about pretending, life hurts.
@LexListens2025
Very insightful. Very, very insightful.
@BastionKnight
Thank you so so much. That means a lot. 💗
@LexListens2025
My pleasure. You wrote very eloquently on a topic that I am sure is very pertinent to many. A topic that certainly is one that those who relate to everything you described would quite likely find it hard (or impossible) to articulate themselves. As such, seeing it from the lens of someone else's perspective may be reassuring, or at the very least helpful in confirming that it is not just them, but that others feel similar too. So kudos to you.
Being alone while my mom is on a trip.
@GreenLime3141
Awww, sending you the biggest hugs. 🥺❤️ I can imagine how difficult it must feel having your mom away and having to spend that time alone. Sometimes, we don't realize just how much comfort having someone around brings us until they're not there, and the quiet can feel a little heavier than usual. It's completely okay if you're struggling with her being away, even if it's only for a little while. Your feelings are valid, and you don't have to feel silly or guilty for finding it hard. 🫂🤍
Sometimes, it's not even necessarily about being physically alone, but about missing that sense of comfort, familiarity, and security that comes with having someone you love nearby. And if that's what you're experiencing, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. You deserve comfort and reassurance, too. Please remember to be gentle with yourself while she's away, and don't put pressure on yourself to be okay every second. ❤️
If you feel up to sharing, what has been the hardest part about being alone while your mom is away? Is it the loneliness itself, missing her presence, or just finding it difficult being in the house without her? I'm here to listen, and you don't have to navigate those feelings alone. 💗🫶

What are you pretending doesn't hurt?
✨️I want to say 2 things. The first one is my dad words. He is saying so many misogynistic stuff that make me feel so hurt.
✨️Second, its the fact that I will never have a good family as much as i pretend to, that those years wont come back and that i will not live the good childhood others have and that hurts me a lot.
Thats it. Those 2 things. I feel so hurt by them. If you want to share Lex and feel some weight leave I m here🤍
Thanks for the amazing post🫂
@cheerfulKiwi1776
I'm so sorry you're carrying these feelings, and I wish you didn't have to experience that kind of hurt, especially from someone whose words can have such a deep impact on you. Hearing misogynistic comments from your dad must be incredibly painful, and you deserve to feel respected, valued, and safe being yourself. The things he says don't define your worth, and you don't deserve to have your feelings hurt by words that make you feel less than you are. 🫂❤️
And that second part really hits my heart. There's a very particular kind of grief that comes with realizing that the childhood you needed and deserved might not have been the childhood you got. It's grieving the experiences you missed, the comfort you needed, and the family you wish you could have had. And sometimes, seeing other people experience those things can make that hurt even deeper, because it reminds you of what you wish you could have experienced, too. You can love your family and still feel hurt by them. You can hope things will get better while also grieving what you've missed. Both feelings can exist together. 🤍
I also want you to know that you're allowed to grieve those years. You don't have to minimize your pain or convince yourself that it wasn't that bad just because time has passed. You deserved a childhood where you felt loved, protected, understood, and free to just be a kid. You deserved those happy memories, too. And it's okay to feel sad about the things you cannot go back and change. That doesn't make you ungrateful or dramatic; it makes you human. ❤️🩹
Thank you for trusting us enough to share these two things with us. You don't have to carry them quietly or pretend they don't hurt. And thank you for offering to listen to me, too. That's such a thoughtful thing to do, especially when you're hurting yourself. Please remember that you deserve the same kindness and space that you're so willing to give to others. You matter, your feelings matter, and you deserve so much gentleness. Sending you so much love. 🫂🤍

Dalaa pretend she no care when deep down, she wish someone would notice that dalaa not okay without having to say it ❤️✨
@Dalaa21
Oh Dalaa, sweetheart. 🥺❤️ Sometimes, pretending not to care becomes a way of protecting ourselves, especially when we're used to hiding how much we're hurting. Sometimes, we wish someone would look a little closer, notice the little changes, and ask if we're really okay, without us having to find the words to explain everything. It can be exhausting being the one who always says they're fine when, deep down, they're wishing someone would notice that they're not. 🫂🤍
You deserve to be checked on, cared for, and reminded that you matter, even when you don't know how to ask for that support. You shouldn't have to hide your pain to make it easier for others, and you don't have to pretend to be okay here. ❤️🩹 Can I gently ask, Dalaa, do you feel like people in your life don't notice when you're struggling, or is it more that it's difficult to let them see just how much you're hurting? Sending you the biggest hugs.
@LexListens2025
😮 Wow, for my first time, it was nice to at least see. That someone thought to write, how many of us quietly feel, with these words out loud. Beautifully said, thank you so much for being confident enough to share your thought on this silent struggle within many of us.👏
@fearlessLand3929
Awww, thank you so much for these incredibly kind words. 🥹🤍 It genuinely means so much to know that this post resonated with you. Sometimes, the feelings we struggle with the most are the ones we find hardest to put into words, and it can feel so lonely thinking we're the only ones experiencing them. My hope with this post was to remind people that they're not alone in these silent struggles, even when it feels like nobody notices or understands. ❤️🩹
There's something so powerful about seeing our own feelings reflected in someone else's words, especially when we've spent so long keeping them to ourselves. You deserve to feel seen, heard, and understood, too. Thank you for taking the time to share this with me. I'm sending you the biggest hugs, and I hope you always remember that your feelings deserve space, even the ones you don't know how to express just yet. 🫂💕
@LexListens2025
Dlaa think it’s a little bit of both
Sometimes people don’t notice because dalaa learned how to hide what feeling behind a smile and sometimes dalaa find it difficult to let them see how much dalaa actually hurting
Dalaa become so used to dealing with things on her own that don’t even know how to explain what’s going on inside her anymore
and thank you for the hug
guys i agree what hurts even more is being the only single person in your family
