Myth vs. Fact: Bipolar Disorder
by ASilentObserver

...See more Hello everyone,  As we celebrate Bipolar Disorder Awareness Week! (March 24th - 30th) [https://www.7cups.com/forum/bipolar/General_2419/JoinUsforBipolarDisorderAwarenessWeekMarch24th30th_349292/], We invite you to join us here to share personal experiences, take our small steps to foster empathy, and offer encouragement and support to each other. Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and so it is important to have a safe and inclusive space where one can able to share their experiences and emotions without any judgment. It is so common for bipolar disorder to be misunderstood.  Some myths and misconceptions can lead to stigma, confusion, and even stop people from seeking the support they need. So this discussion is dedicated to separating fact from those misconceptions. Here are a few common myths that I noticed: Myth 1: Bipolar disorder means extreme mood swings from happy to sad. While significant mood changes are a core feature of bipolar disorder, it is more complex than simple "ups and downs."  Mania can involve increased energy, racing thoughts, impulsivity, and decreased need for sleep.  The intensity and duration of these mood episodes vary from person to person. Myth 2: People with bipolar disorder are dangerous and violent. This is such a harmful and inaccurate stereotype.  The majority of people with bipolar disorder are not violent.  Similar to us, they can experience a range of emotions and behaviors.  Untreated mania or severe depression can sometimes increase the risk of impulsive behavior, but with proper treatment and support, individuals with bipolar disorder can live stable and fulfilling lives. Myth 3: Bipolar disorder is caused by a lack of willpower or a character flaw. It is a mental health condition with a strong biological basis.  As per research, it involves imbalances in brain chemistry, genetic factors, and environmental influences.  It is not a matter of personal weakness or a lack of moral character.  Now it is your turn. Please share:  * What are some other myths you have heard about bipolar disorder? * Have you encountered any misconceptions in your own life? * What helps you challenge these myths and promote understanding? We look forward to reading your experiences and supporting you. Let's work together to create an understanding and supportive community for those who are affected by bipolar disorder.

...See more Hello everyone,  As we celebrate the Bipolar Disorder Awareness Week! (March 24th - 30th) [https://www.7cups.com/forum/bipolar/General_2419/JoinUsforBipolarDisorderAwarenessWeekMarch24th30th_349292/], we invite you to join us here to share personal experiences, taking our small steps to foster empathy, and offering encouragement and support to each other. Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and so it is important to have a safe and inclusive space where one can able to share their experiences and emotions without any judgment. What is Bipolar Disorder? Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme shifts in mood, energy, and behavior. People with bipolar disorder 1  experience periods of intense highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood swings can disrupt daily life and lead to challenges in relationships, work, and school.   People with Bipolar 2 has their own challenges and struggles as well.   That is why sharing our stories and experiences can help to reduce the stigma and misconceptions associated with bipolar disorder. It can also help spread awareness, educate others about the condition, and support those affected. When we share our experiences, we create a sense of community and let others know that they are not alone. So how can you participate? We encourage you to share your personal experiences with bipolar disorder, whether you are living with the condition yourself or have a loved one who is affected. You can share your story here in this thread for support and discussion. If you are uncertain what to share, here are some questions that may help you share: * What is it like to live with bipolar disorder? * How has bipolar disorder affected your life? * What are some of the challenges you have faced? * What are some of the things that have helped you to cope with bipolar disorder? * What advice would you give to someone who is newly diagnosed with bipolar disorder? We look forward to reading your experiences and supporting you. Let's work together to create an understanding and supportive community for those who are affected by bipolar disorder.

...See more I recently went through a very confusing phase. I started exploring myself, but it got to a point where I longed so much that I couldn't even find attention. I hate to admit it, but it seems I'm depressed because of a lack of intimate or even consensual exploration. It's shameful. Well, I never believed this would happen to me. If anyone wants to talk to me every day (or almost every day), I'm willing to talk.

...See more Bipolar is a real thing. When you don't know you have it, life is strange. Lots of lost moments. I now know the symptoms. How they feel, even when they are minor. I sometimes see them and I catch myself. I work through them. Self-care and support keeps me together. There used to be a time where I believed myself to be someone important. Today, I strive for normalcy. Its part of the process. To gain control of one's self. Its a must. Bipolar is such a weird word but it makes sense once you know you have it. I live a normal life but I struggle sometimes, like right now. Luckily, I am aware. And for that I am grateful because I can do something about it. It's the anxiety that will trap you and blind you sometimes, and I wonder if other people go through that too. Mental health journeys are intense. I regret what I say sometimes, only because I am aware. I am aware now.

...See more Since I was small I've had small outbursts of emotion. Recently this has gotten worse with bad reactions to pressure, different opinions, and infractions with my dad that shouldn't be. I also make really bad decisions and my mania happens when my dad is mad about my outbursts of emotion. I'm usually hyper and really happy with friends and depressed after big fights or the loss of a friend. Plus when I start homework Im really excited and then I just drop it in the middle. Same with creative projects and relationships. It's been a big struggle and I haven't had help with my Bipolar Disorder, I was wondering- how can I help myself or receive help? Because my dad won't believe me and my mom won't either because they'll believe I'm faking

Not a lot of people to talk to

...See more Hi Everybody, I am schizophrenic and I have only a few friends and they are good friends who understand my illness. But I have a tendency to smother them, so I try to stay away from them more than I like. It is hard to make new friends the older I get. Often I feel like I am not good at conversation. Or I joke around which seems to offend people. I keep trying to reach out, sometimes finding people to talk to, but often I guess my wierdness puts people off. I seem to have had more charisma when I was younger (I guess). But I keep trying to reach out. Do any of you experience these things?

...See more i dont really know how to start this, but i think ive been diagnosed with major depressive disorder for about four years now? a year and a half ago i was diagnosed with ptsd. now im not sure if any of those can cause psychosis, but all i know is that ive experienced psychosis more than once. so the main reason for my ptsd is because ive been in very many emotionally abusive relationships. and this is even worse when we add on the fact that my parents werent exactly the best. so as you can imagine i have an awful time navigating relationships and knowing whether they are healthy. when something triggers my ptsd, i usually start to have thoughts like "everyone i know is only talking to me so they can gather information on how to kill me or ruin my reputation" or "theyre only friends with me because they like to see me sad" i start to hear things that arent there, not voices but sounds like someone banging on my window, ringing and beeping noises. when i see things its usally someone chasing me or just random things constantly moving in the corner of my eyes. sometimes i feel things like someoe is pulling or pushing me. sometimes it feels like theres a completely different person in the mirror staring at me and judging almost. sometimes i think like someones controlling my life or im stuck in someone elses body and they like to make my life go in this sick and twisted loop. always the same cycle, i feel good about myself, i find someone i genuinely care about, i get scared theyll leave and feel threatened, i act impulsively and it makes the situation worse, and it ends up just becoming a self fulfilling profecy. i cant tell if the people im around i actually enjoy or i am just trying to relive my trauma and try to change the outcome so that i get some closure. the delusions really affect my relationships, and i honestly dont know any ways to get rid of them. so yeah sorry if this was long or doesnt even make sense because im rambling or something

...See more I feel tired and anxious. I feel scared to leave the home, because I feel like someone or something is out to get me. And I know I’m struggling a lot more with, like violent thoughts. I want to trace them to their roots, because now I’m afraid of my father killing me, or something.  I often push myself. And I’ve found myself, like at this center with someone who also visited the psychiatric care, like me. I’m inspired by her story, and yet I know nothing about her. Something about her pulls always from me before I get a chance to talk to her. Her name is Sierra. I honestly thought I was going to go into the psychiatric care two times, before taking on this job of mine, which I took out my my own free will, but there this a tie there, with my mom.  So yeah, I feel like, I’m bulldozing my way towards this. All I got was desperation towards the end of the care, and I didn’t end up going all the way through to the home facility, which was basically the reason I was there.  I’m not compatible to my home, anymore, and I hate to admit that. Because now it’s a means to and end attitude. Thanks.

...See more Newly reaching out, I’d like to find friends with similar mental health issues. I struggle to make friends and connect with people when they don’t understand or know of the conditions. I’ve been alone for a long time, I’ve decided it’s time I tried to branch out to help myself and possibly others.  I don’t want to feel alone anymore.  Xx
