Things you wish weren't said or assumed about your health conditions (seen or invisible)
Inspired by @Jesusredeemedme2425 because she always makes varied and interesting topic discussions :)
1. For some of us, we can't just pop a painkiller and have the pain, symptoms or discomfort magically washed away, those don't work for me.
That's why I personally choose natural remedies, like heat and rest and binaural beats.
2. Why don't you take my word for it, that I can't manage that action because it aggravates my body or mind and leaves me broken in pieces for a long time..
You make me do something and after that I can barely function, then your response... Oh sorry, I assumed you were exaggerating because you don't look sick to me..
3. Oh just smile and carry on, there's nothing you can do about it, so might as well be happy..
Nope sometimes I want to wallow and be miserable that is all too much, accept my mood, yours can be whatever you want!
4. Why don't you join us?
Because it's a long taxing journey or activity and I cannot manage it. I'm not being difficult or dramatic. I have to think carefully if there are places to sit and rest, how long it takes, will I be standing or walking for a long time, you may not have consider these things but I do!
5. Stop judging a book by it's cover
Yes I may look younger, I may look healthy, I may walk un-aided, that still doesn't mean you get to judge or assume I am not struggling inside or desperately grabbing onto walls or trying to give myself the mental fortitude to take another step instead of collapsing or resting because this time I don't think I can make it home..
6. Illnesses vary from one person to the next, yours could be textbook, mine are not. Just because something works for you, doesn't mean it will for me.
Stop assuming you know my body, my health better than I do. You've read something? Good for you, I know what works and what doesn't!
7. When I say, I can't manage much. It's extremely taxing to go to more than one place/do more than one activity, let alone several.. Don't scoff and laugh, like I'm being a Princess. I physically cannot manage it, it's not an exaggeration.
8. Stop being lazy!
This one makes me scream. Taking care of myself, limiting my movements, napping or getting a lot of rest, helps my body repair itself. I'm not doing nothing, I'm preventing a potential strain or injury that has become all too frequent for me.
@ScrabbleBrain
What a beautiful post 🩷🤗
I had a spinal operation and thankfully it was successful and I had to learn how to walk again.
But when I'm walking slow or not doing as much as others my age, people judge.
Cold weather flares up pain in my back.
It makes you nauseous and tired but people assume you are over egging it.
Or people assume you are lazy, if you choose not to carry heavy loads etc
I had to go for an x-ray recently but x-rays don't show pain, I didn't know which room to go to and was waiting patiently for someone to call me, the nurse came and said, someone as healthy as you is hardly waiting to be pushed in a wheelchair. You can walk , but I wasn't waiting for her, just to be directed where to go.
When she pulled up my top to get the x-ray and saw the severe scarring on my spine, she was mortified and tried to backtrack but I told her politely she could shove her apology 🥺🩵
@Amanda84 It sucks that you were spoken to like that, especially by a nurse of all people. I hope today is a good or better day for you :)
I just wanted to make something for people to have a space to share or read and understand that people aren't robots.
It's ok to be in your feelings and say, It's not a good time, I don't want to go into it, tomorrow maybe better or worse and if you're asking me, just to hear me say, I'm fine..
Think again or better still don't ask a hollow question in the first place.
@ScrabbleBrain
Exactly, think before you prejudge, thank you for your support 🩷🤗
@Amanda84 You always have that, except when I'm busy being mysteriously impish 😏
@ScrabbleBrain

@ScrabbleBrain
Pain is subjective. There’s so many things that cause it. Nerves, bone, muscles.
I had surgery on my neck in May. Often I feel others expectations are for me to poof 🪄 Not have pain.
Let me be when I need to lie down with my heating pad!! I’m not trying to be lazy, I would just like some energy for the remainder of the day. Gotta refill the tank.
I’m not Wonder Woman Despite the possible rumors 😁
@peachThinker662 Where's your cape missy, you outed yourself. 😎
But Yes, just because we're not complaining about being sore or tired or fragile, we still need time to get back on our feet, at our own pace, without people's opinions on it.
You know your body and what it needs in the moment, others do not.
@ScrabbleBrain
shoot!!! 🤫
for sure. Maybe i should start making a formal announcement every hour of my pain “on a pain scale 1-10?”
And some people can walk around with broken bones and not know, pain tolerances vary.
@peachThinker662 I wanna do that, hold up billboards and say pick a number 1-10..
It does wildly vary. I had someone say something like.. You shouldn't be so negative, I go through hardships equal to yours, but I stay positive or smile, or something like that
And for someone who knows what's it like to struggle, I was so surprised at her attitude towards me.
Deal with things however you like, if you want to pretend, that's up to you, but if I want to be vocal and raw, then how is that your business? I'm letting you be how you are, and you are calling me out..?
Can I do this rating thing for my mental health? Because that would be so helpful <3
@jesusredeemedme2425 You can do anything you please. Go for it :)
I mean like IRL. 1 means leave me alone, 10 means let’s go shopping! Hehe
@jesusredeemedme2425 Just leave me with 1 for now 😂
Yes ma’am hands you chocolate, a sleepy puppy, a book, and a fluffy blanket and backs away quietly <3
@jesusredeemedme2425 You look after me so well, thank you, all I need is the chocolate and blankie and that is heaven for me.
Anything you need? :)
I try hehe <3
Books and a heavy blankie and a fully charged phone and a personal chef who slips me food hehe
@jesusredeemedme2425
this sounds amazing
especially a personal chef!!!
What would you have them cook??
Have you seen all those AI videos of “choose your own food dispenser” <3 WANT lol
I don’t have specifics but my meals would be a start. Food always tastes better when someone else cooks it. Hahaha
No I have not seen those.
Would you like a taco dispenser in your fridge? Or a bedside drawer full of tuna salad, or an ENTIRE ROOM full of cheesecake???
@jesusredeemedme2425
I’ll take a taco dispenser and the cheesecake 😋 yummy!!!
Sameeee hehe. Also chili and ice cream <3
@jesusredeemedme2425
ooooh those are definitely good ones.
Starburst candy please 💕😅
@peachThinker662 sureeee like we're going to believe you're not wonder woman *-*

@BlueDarkAurora

@ScrabbleBrain 💗

@BlueDarkAurora warm goofy gooey smiles floating your way, while I procrastinate about the chores.. 🥰
@ScrabbleBrain hehe xD

@ScrabbleBrain
thank you for posting this can agree with all them we have many unseen health issues that make it very hard most the time
we also overweight' due to not being able to do a lot even walking hard for us what we hate the most is comments on using the motorized carts at stores we heard people say if she just walk loss weight she not be using that or she fat not disabled so she just being lazy we heard both a lot
so we in pain 24/7 tried many things over the years yes some of them help a little but not much at all we heard even doctors say things like we tried everything that might help nothing more we can do or your case is so complicated due to all your health issues
so we have this issue chronic pain part of a daily thing for us but people always assuming things that just not true
what even more sad is there a mental health club we can go to but it not really physical disability friendly' so can not go most the time due to our physical disabilities but again seeing we not look disabled even their we judged and they not get why we not coming
the clubhouse' for us in about 40 min away they come get us in a van the ride to and from the place is hard on our body. then when you get there you sit on hard chairs and to do most the stuff your standing and or walking so all that very hard on us we talked to our therapist about this at community mental health and she agree with us she even went to others about this but nothing seem to be done about this big issue
for us the big issue we have is we isolated mostly so the club would be very helpful for us but again we can not go due to our pain issues and physical health disabilities we to go to socialize with others but can not go way it is right now so even within the mental health system they really lacking understanding of us that live in chronic pain 24/7
so we can relate to this post a lot
I’m sorry :(
What about mental health Zoom meetings?
@jesusredeemedme2425
not sure the clubhouse we go to does not do that we asked before but hank you for idea
Might check with your health care provider. Sometimes they offer online classes and such <3
@jesusredeemedme2425
Thank you We have asked seeing were we live only can go through community mental health it very limited were we live in northern Michigan it partly due to why we came to 7cupa to both get and give support we also can not email or text our therapist. Only communicate when we see her every 2 weeks so it very hard offline for us to find support
@jesusredeemedme2425 Or even a Whatsapp or any other type of group messenger service, that you can all contribute too and be heard and supported and at the same time, be comfortable too?
That’s an idea <3
@stormieandpaws Thank you for sharing your struggles with me. I know it doesn't fix it but voicing it, is a start.
I always feel like unless you're sick, you really don't get the magnitude of the toll it takes, both on the body and the mind.
So many looks, so many judgements.. I hope you get softer cushioned chairs.
I feel the ones that are supposed to help are the ones that cause the most pain.
I was being told to reach out for assistance and when I finally let my guard down, she purposely took great pleasure in making my life extra difficult and she was impaired herself :(
@ScrabbleBrain
thank you for your sharing with us too we tried so many things over the years too am still trying to get more help but right kind of help tonight was able to go with friend had pizza and talk with her was great
@stormieandpaws Aw that is so lovely to hear. I'm so pleased it was a positive day for you. Very much deserved :)
@ScrabbleBrain
thank you the friend we went out with is only deep friend we have offline we still not told her we have DID but she knows we have mental illnesses but was great talk to her being with her always helps
today was another good day went to church was with others talking in adult Sunday school that was so nice
@stormieandpaws Sometimes we just need a lil lightness :)
I'm glad the lovely days are continuing
@ScrabbleBrain
Hi Scrabble! 😊 ❤️
I cannot thank you enough for your incredibly heart felt, well written forum post! 😊❤️
Just wow! 😳 Just sayin', this one highly resonates with me and "hits me right where I live". Thank you for validating many of our thoughts, feelings and emotions. Your post is so incredibly astute and it gives us words for how it is that many of us feel.
Feels like an anthem for the ill, the ones that live with chronic pain and especially the ones of us that what we suffer from, is quite invisible to others, as you mentioned.
Sure, I may look like the embodiment of health, physically fit even. To look at me no one would know the chronic pain that I have experienced since the age of nine. I knew it would be a life long issue and so I don't take pain medication. Sounds like a heavy load for the liver. Sometimes in life, things can be simply trading one problem for another.
People have their limitations and for some people, that goes into the category of lacking empathy, compassion, judging others before knowing the full story. With acceptance comes peace. I accept that limitations in that area exist. I have a tendency to reduce my expectations of others. If I explain my physical limitations and it's not heard, understood, I simply stop explaining. Part of self care is refusing to argue with someone that's only purpose is to misunderstand you.
I really do kind of get it though. If you see an individual that doesn't complain in an effort to not bother others, reaches for positivity consistently, is "fighting the good fight" and refuses to say "I am disabled" but instead says "I am this abled", the lines get blurred. Not showing outward signs to others like a cane or a wheel chair, well.... some people just don't get it even if that wheel chair might be in order some moments but you aren't ready to go there yet.
It feels good to know ones self, know ones limits, to take physical breaks with the knowledge that many of us can over do things in that area. Not doing so means we are of use to no one including ourselves and our goals and you sure will hear lots of complaining from others that may have pushed you too far, incapacitated for days. They seem to get it then, when you can no longer move.
It can be good to set boundaries, tell others "no", stop explaining yourself for reasons of self preservation, and focus less on what others think. I simply think to myself how others can operate....oh, well that's just a paper cut. Well, maybe it kind of hurts when it's your paper cut? People can be quite flippant and self absorbed at times. This is no paper cut that I live with and I hope none of you let another tell you that you simply have a paper cut either.
Keep rockin' the house sweet souls! ❤️ You got this!!!!
*high fives* 😊 and big *hugs* ❤️
@SparkyGizmo I so appreciate your words and your wonderful addition. Sometimes I think oof this is a lil close to home.
And other times I think people need a safe space to talk and not feel attacked. If I'm personally going through something, maybe I can share it in a way where, people may not want to divulge details but silently they can feel, wow someone else gets it too.
I'm glad I made it now, I'm always a lil nervous about coming across as too angry, but some topics are too deep, not to get passionate about.
The break thing and just saying No, it felt like it took me a long time to realise, I could do that and stop burning myself out.
I'm not a people pleaser but I take my responsibilities seriously.
@ScrabbleBrain
I hear you and completely my sweet friend! 😊 ❤️
I can understand your thoughts and especially as a listener....things like, does this hit too close to home, do I feel angry, why am I creating this post? Is this for me only or is it helpful to others too? Am I the one asking for support or am I turning my pain into passion/purpose, support and help for others to let others know "I get it", "I've been there".
I, for one, found your post to be highly effective, quite needed and many others here do as well! I am truly grateful! ❤️
I think this is a great example of being what our founder, Glen, refers to as the "wounded healer". Who but the wounded to show such kindness, empathy and compassion to others than the wounded them selves? Your post is beautiful! This was incredibly well done! It opened up dialogue for others to share with you!
Thank you for showing your strength in vulnerability! Impressive! 💡
*high fives* 😊 and big *hugs* ❤️
@SparkyGizmo Smiles :) This really has become my favourite forum, it is so so diverse with so many insights and I get to be a part of it :)
@ScrabbleBrain
❤️❤️❤️
I can relate to a lot of things posted here. There is so much ignorance that many of us have to put up with!
@adventurousBranch3786 Ugh, at least we can all come together here and share what's comfortable
@ScrabbleBrain
agree so often others can be mean even rude when they truly not get it we glad at least here other relate and get it
@stormieandpaws I would prefer they ask, instead of assume, once it's a sensible non intrusive question.
@ScrabbleBrain
yes agree as we open to answering questions always even about our DID we came to see that better they ask questions and learn from our answers then to just assume things this even online we use to go to a chat many we found out thought we was dumb due to way we spell and well the lack of things in what we saying too but one member we allowed to call us for other reason he was amazed how smart we was and how we communicate when talking on phone it changed how he thought about us and he told others too so their assuming was way wrong
we found even when at times we assume things they mostly wrong too live and learn
@stormieandpaws Can I shake him? Because I can't see you as anything else than a smart articulate cookie 😍
We all should learning, getting to know one another slowly and bearing in mind, some people could be impacted by health but it doesn't make them any less of a person.
There are so many assumptions about me and even when I grit my teeth and correct them, they still don't seem apologetic or embarrassed more like..
That's not what I want to hear, I can't be wrong, stop making me look foolish.. Pfft you did that yourself!
@ScrabbleBrain
yes agree with you and thank you many places online we been hurt by others thinking assuring we not very smart but never asking questions can say that not happened here at 7 cups most ask questions many ask why we say we a lot so we explain we a DID system this helps both people a lot also some ask more questions to learn what DID is wish more would be like that offline not assume things as not all disabilities are seen many of us our disabilities are not seen ones but effected every part of our life
with us family members been the worst they even would state your health can not be as bad as mine as your still young or your just being lazy some comments even way worst then that even when we proved them wrong they did not even say sorry but kelp on saying mean things then others believed them in town we was living in
after we moved people in new city most be kind even made for first time in very very long time a friend that trust worthiny we became deep friends too
@stormieandpaws You've been through a lot and I'm glad things are starting to get better now. I get the age thing because my sickness developed at a young age and everyone was like...
Oh but that can't be right, you're so young. Are you sure about your symptoms or capabilities? Ugh I know my own mind and body.
Thank you for explaining the *we* bit. I didn't really think to ask about that but it makes perfect sense now.
I have a question but I hope it's not an ignorant or silly one. Do television shows like The United States of Tara where the focus is on a person with DID help bring awareness, to people who haven't heard of your condition or is it so over the top, that it makes it worse?
You don't have to answer, I was just curious :)
@ScrabbleBrain
TV has made it worst as many shows and movies show the ones with DID lashing out and hurting others this has made people fear ones with DID the therapist we have now say even many mental health worker will not work with ones with DID so it like misleading in many ways ones we know with DID they do not hurt others most hurt them selves by trigger warning forms of self harm also many also have eating disorders and other health issues related to the abuse
so yes it made people more aware of DID but also misleading as to how DID system really be
we always happy to answer any questions others have about DID as that brings true awareness to DID not the lies that been told over the years about DID
@stormieandpaws That's for being open and your explanations are so wonderfully detailed that it's easy to digest.
I was hoping it was a positive thing but maybe if they do documentaries with genuine DID people, it will let people see all the misconceptions are not reality.
At least you are and others are here to share and educate people that want to learn more without assumptions or judgments. Thank you :)
I got to admit, I'm not that open so I admire you for your courage :)
My parents used to say #8 to me all the time when I was little because I liked sitting inside with the air conditioning on reading books all summer. I was then semi-diagnosed with CHARCOT MARIE TOOTH, A muscular dystrophy and neuropathy that affect my peripheral nerves in my legs and hands, at the age of twelve. They continued on with it until I got my first job at sixteen and the genetic testing that officially confirmed my diagnosis. I wasn’t being lazy standing running jumping and playing caused me pain. They would continuously tell me to get off the ground if they caught me sitting outside reading in the mossy patches we had in the yard or if I was sitting in the sandbox my dad built for the pool to sit on. It wasn’t laziness I just masked my pain a lot.
