Things Muslims Wish You Knew
If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?
If you’re not on this journey, please share insights you’ve learned while interacting with those who are, whether family, friends, or anyone else. Share things you’ve read, and ask if they’re true. Share beliefs that you have, ask questions, and more! This is a safe space where you can learn about things you’ve never experienced. <3
Let’s have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation among friends! As a song in one of the Land Before Time movies says, “It takes all sorts to make a world!” <3

Hey kiara, thank you for this wonderful post 😊 i honestly love it 💓
So, I've a lot to say here… but I’ll just drop a few things 😊 n honestly I’ve thought abt thousands times before writing this… and still, I wish more ppl understood this :)
Ppls often see Islam from the outside and assume a lot of things, but the reality is much more human and simple.
Terrorism is not Islam.
No religion teaches violence against innocent people. Those actions come from individuals, not faith. Blaming an entire religion for it is like judging millions by the mistakes of a few.
n Abt women... many think they're controlled or treated like slaves xD, but that’s not the truth for most of us.
Modesty, including the veil, is not a burden for everyone. For many women, it’s a personal choice, a form of identity, and even a sense of peace 💓. It’s not about being forced, it’s abt what feels right to them. ( personally I love being a niqabi... i feel comfortable when I go out. i feel hidden from men's eye's which increases respect more to my Abaya n being a muslim woman ) no offense... just out of my own perspective of abaya 💓
Islam, at its core, teaches respect, patience, and accountability like any community, not every person represents it perfectly, but the foundation is not what Ppl's often assume. 😊
@Ailuraphilelove8tear9
It was wonderful reading your perspective. Thanks for sharing. ❤️

With deep respect for all faiths and for the many peaceful Muslims around the world (I have never been a muslim), I say this:
Many passages in the Qur’an raise difficult questions for many people. For example:
Qur’an 2:191 – “Kill them wherever you find them and expel them from wherever they expelled you.”
Qur’an 9:5 – “Kill the polytheists wherever you find them…”
Qur’an 9:29 – “Fight those who do not believe in Allah… until they pay the jizya.”
Verses like these are extremely harsh, violent and disturbing when read without historical context. Sadly, these are also passages that extremist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State have quoted while recruiting fighters to attack innocent and vulnerable civilians in my country.
The result has been heartbreaking as millions are being/have been displaced, millions of lives lost. Our media is not truthful to expose it to the whole world that the actual statistics of these deaths quadruple what they report and that multiple entire communities and villages turned into graveyards, people fled/evacuated completely.
Because of this painful reality, some historians and even certain Islamic scholars acknowledge that Islam’s history contains both messages of peace and episodes of conflict, depending on how particular texts are interpreted.
Personally, I grew up attending an interfaith primary school, where Islam, Christianity, and traditional religion were all taught, practiced and respected. That upbringing taught me to honour people of different beliefs and to hold firmly to the principle of doing no harm.
My prayer is always for peace, healing, and understanding among all people, regardless of faith.
@YorubaAngel
Hey hi Angel ❤️
Frist of all, a gentle hug ur way... I'm sry for what u experienced
I hear u… n I’m truly sry for the pain n loss you’ve witnessed. No one deserves that :( what groups like Boko Haram or ISIS have done is heartbreaking, n honestly, they’ve also given a very wrong image of Islam :( they take parts of religion, remove context, and use it for their own violence n that harms both innocent lives and the understanding of the faith :(
n Abt the verses you mentioned, I just want to gently share the full context 😊, b'cos these are often quoted partially.
Qur’an 2:190–191
English:
Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.
And kill them wherever you encounter them and expel them from where they expelled you…
Context: These verses were revealed when early Muslims were being persecuted, attacked, n forced out of their homes in Makkah. this is abt self-defense in war, not random violence. It clearly starts with "those who fight you" n limits aggression with "do not transgress."
Qur’an 9:4–6
English:
Except those polytheists with whom you made a treaty and who have not broken it… fulfill your treaty with them.
Then, when the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them…
And if any of them seeks your protection, then grant him protection and escort him to a place of safety.
Context:
This was revealed when certain groups broke peace treaties and attacked Muslims. It’s addressing a specific betrayal during wartime.
But even here:
Those who kept peace treaties are protected (9:4)
Anyone seeking safety must be given protection (9:6)
So it’s not a general command - it’s abt justice in a specific conflict.
Qur’an 9:29
Arabic:
قَاتِلُوا الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ... حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُوا الْجِزْيَةَ عَن يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَاغِرُونَ
English:
Fight those who do not believe in Allah… until they give the jizya…
Context:
This came during a time of political and military tension. Jizya was part of a governance system, where non-Muslims paid a tax instead of military service, while Muslims paid zakat. It was not abt forcing belief, but abt how societies were organized then.
n alongside all this, there are verses like:
Qur’an 5:32
Arabic:
مَن قَتَلَ نَفْسًا بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ... فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَ النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا
English:
Whoever kills a soul… it is as if he has killed all of humanity; and whoever saves one, it is as if he has saved all of humanity.
That’s why many Muslims feel pain too b'cos what you’ve experienced is real n devastating, but it’s not what Islam teaches at its core. It’s a misuse of religion by ppls who ignore its full msgs :(
I truly respect ur intention for peace n understanding. conversations like this, where we listen and explain calmly, are what actually help ppl see each other more clearl

🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
A unit of prayer (rak'ah) A unit of prayer (rak'ah) is what constitutes a prayer. Our prayers consist of units, and we have five fixed prayers a day. There is also a 100-unit prayer, which is optional and performed by some people to gain multiplied rewards and good deeds, and through which they pray for others✨✨🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
@Ailuraphilelove8tear9 Ma Sha Allah you’ve nicely presented the contexts behind those verses. Allah bless you❤️

Thank you for this lovely forum!
I'd say ,Islam sometimes can be viewed as oppressive or violent even by many ,but it has nothing to do with Islam , like everything else ,some people ruin the image of things by their wrong perspectives
In Islam no one is oppressed to do anything
We must do things ,but we aren't forced to do them , it's a personal choice to do different kinds of prayers and I can't force anyone to do anything, forcing someone to do a certain Islamic thing is prohibited completely,and everything is a choice
Also we love everyone else ,we don't hate anyone,we might avoid certain actions or behaviours ,but we still love everyone even those who do them , and god loves everyone too ,also cursing someone's religion is a big big sin ,we must protect others and allow them to practice their beliefs in peace
Some people take things so far in Islam and make it feel like a cage ,there are a lot of things that don't really relate to Islam at all that you can hear ,Islam isn't violent ,it protects human rights from souls ,money and freedom
Also in Islam everything is a good deed that could be a path to heaven ,a kind word ,a smile ,even being kind to yourself or taking care of yourself ,admiring nature ,helping out by something basic ,or even just wanting to help out , they are all things appreciated
Also god is more forgiving and merciful than people say ,but he's also fair ,anyone who hurt you ,will get what they deserve for the pain they made you feel ,and your mistakes get literally wiped away for any second you feel hurt my friend ,in Islam we say mercy was broken into one hundred parts ,one is on earth ,all the mercy and love on earth in every human ,and the rest 99 are with god
There's a lot more but I thought you'd love to know those my friends!

I am not muslim, but have experienced Islam. I agree that Islam as a faith and philosophy is actually very simple, open and beautiful. Just like other faiths in their purest forms. Due to being non-muslim, and also enjoying other faiths .. i am not the most qualified person to advocate for Islam🥹.
Hence, It hurts me to see so much content about "islam" that's not Islam, but popular opinion. Moreover in Islam: muslim practioners, its usually the loudest, rule makers, faith leaders ... who are loudest proponents projected to commons. Making it up to 90% opposite or restrictive to what Islam is. Giving Islam the harsh impression its gotten.
So here among the commoner muslims ... its truly beautiful to see you talk about the simple, beautiful islam i know being spoken a little deeper just as i understand it. 💚
Happy Eid
@BlueHope909
Awww I am really happy to see that you understand this perspective, also if you believe something with your heart then feel free to speak up for it , we're not scholars,but our hearts are enough to tell us when something is wrong ,like when some people associate violence with such peaceful religion ,and you're very true about how this impression of Islam came ,i am happy more people are starting to open up their eyes
Thank youuuu ,and happy Eid for you toooooo💓💓💓💓💓
I wish people knew that Hijab/ veil isn't a forced thing or is painful for us to wear, that covering out skin makes us feel uncomfortable but actually the opposite...
Covering ourselves and wearing modest clothes is actually veryy comfortable. You're not worried about any part of your body being exposed unintentionally, it makes us feel pretty carefree and we don't need the approval of others to wear it...
Islam does not oppress women. In Islam, women are like pearls in a clam, once that clam is opened and the pearl comes out, it goes from the hands of one person to another until at some point, it loses it's shine and value...
Before Islam, people used to bury their daughters alive because giving birth to a daughter meant humiliation and embarrassment, but it was Islam that prohibited them from doing this, it was Islam that protectes the rights of women and valued their lives...
I could go on about this, there's so much i wish people knew instead of just assuming 😅
Thank you for this post @jesusredeemedme2425
@Fatimaishere
Beautiful explanation of hijab! :) What I think is interesting is that a lot of Christians don't know that we have that in our religion as well. In fact, what you said about a pearl in an oyster is in the Bible. Modest dress also stems from our religion, which stems from Judaism. I think a lot of people forget just how similar we really are. :)
@TovaCares76
Like Christian woman have to put veil too?? i thought only nuns would wear wear that ?? is that specific or common to every women's??
@Ailuraphilelove8tear9
Some Orthodox Jewish women, and some Christian women still cover their heads today. In modern churches, I think it is mostly associated with Catholic women (even those of us that aren't nuns), but a lot of Christian women still dress modestly and some wear head coverings. I know Amish and Mennonite women cover their heads. In my caregivers church, all of the women cover their heads, but I don't know if that's because of their religion, or because of where they are from (Ethiopia). 😊
We have hijab?
@Fatimaishere
That's amazing how u explained abt hijab 😊 love it ❤️ thank you for sharing ❤️..!!
@Ailuraphilelove8tear9
Yes, I think this is a valuable discussion, to enable kindness and no judgment because as a woman who lives in the west, I've received prejudice , claiming we are not modest like women in the East, and we don't dress respectfully etc but as a woman who lives this life, I know how respectful we are 🩷
I have a question XD Where does the West stop and the East start?????
@jesusredeemedme2425
Who knows 😁
@Amanda84
Sry to hear this :( but yeah exactly… respect n modesty isn’t abt east or west, it’s abt the person 💕 really appreciate u sharing this 🤗
@Fatimaishere
There is a lot of commonality in this ... not just is Christianity and Judaism but even among North Indian hindus, covering heads in prayer.
Ofc given india has a sizable muslim population, to the uninitiated. it looks every woman is wearing a a hijab or head covering. But the head covering and the choice to wear it cuts across the same way.
So enjoy your freedom, and enjoy sharing it with us. We can only be happy for you all.
@jesusredeemedme2425 Just wondering, is this things Muslims wish I knew? Or things I wish Muslims knew? Its a little confusing.
@genericbeing both.
Because Muslims who don't know this are ones who make the strict prejudiced rules that has caused islamophobia.
@BlueHope909 No ones afraid of Islam
Hello, as a Muslim woman, I would like to thank you for this post and your kind words. Islam is a religion of peace, love, and mercy, and I sincerely hope its messages—filled with compassion and harmony—reach people all around the world.
As a Muslim woman, I experience a deep sense of happiness, reassurance, and inner peace. I draw my strength from Allah Almighty and from His Book, the Holy Qur’an. I strive to please Him in all my actions, and I am truly grateful for the many blessings He has bestowed upon me. The strength that comes from faith is endless—it never fades or runs out, and it remains a constant source of energy and resilience in my life.
@jesusredeemedme2425 First, I just want to acknowledge that so many of the things I was thinking of.. have already been beautifully explained by others in the replies🤍
One thing I’d still love to add is how certain verses from the Quran are often pulled out of context.. missing the historical background, the verses before and after, or relying on mistranslations.
Many of these verses often cited to potray Islam as violent.. are almost always taken from specific historical moments of self defense, or warfare, and they’re balanced by many other verses commanding peace, justice and mercy.
So I wish people knew.. that Islam can’t be understood in soundbites. And that.. judging a religion based on a single verse without its textual surrounding, historical background, and reason for revelation for a certain verse.. isn’t a fair or honest way to understand it. And wouldn't do justice to it either.
I am not a Muslim but I am eager to know too. Thank you for this thread, dear redeemed
