Have you ever seen fireflies? - Magical experience from childhood

So I grew up in a small town where summer evenings were quiet and breezy. I remember seeing them since I was 7-8 years old. There was a huge marking nut tree next to my house and during late summers it would be swarming with them at night. Hundreds of them. They would also be on the bushes, hedges, and plants of all sorts.

Sometimes they used to come inside our house, mostly visible during blackouts at night. I've even had one sitting on my hand. It was a truly magical experience. Seeing light glowing inside tiny living creatures felt like holding a little miracle in my palm.✨

As I grew up, their appearance became less and less every year. Perhaps it was the radiation from the telecom towers, the increased use of chemicals in nearby farms, or maybe something else was dimming their presence.

I think the last time I saw one was when I was 14. We permanently moved out of that town at the time. It's been 15 years and I haven't seen a single firefly since.

Recently I read an article saying fireflies are disappearing all over the world, with habitat loss, pesticide use, and light pollution among the biggest threats to their survival. Their populations are declining rapidly, and if this continues, many of their species could go extinct within a generation.

It broke my heart and brought back all the beautiful memories. Watching them flicker in the dark, feeling amazed by something so simple and real - like a tiny spectacle from childhood, glowing just long enough to stay with you forever.💫❤️

When did you last see them?

User Profile: peachThinker662
peachThinker662 October 15th, 2025

I want to say last summer.

I wasn’t outside this summer at night.

But the fun of just staring in to the darkness with my siblings and oooh I saw one, me too!

Often they’re visible in August during summer nights here

I absolutely loved reading this. I've never seen a firefly myself ever. I really wish they don't go extinct and that the coming generations are able to witness this miracle too.

@Joe85 Wow! You made me remind of my good old days. I remember when I was a kid, I used to live in a small town with my grandparents. In the summers, when we had a powercut (which happened quite often back then), we would grab our pillows and run to the terrace to escape the heat. I would lie down under the sky, see the stars twinkling and try to count them. And then, some flies would pass by which would grab my attention. Why? Because they're glowing. I always used to think, they have a torch inside them. It's been years since then, but I did not get to see stars as I saw those times. Some of the best days of my life. I don't know if I'm getting happy or sad thinking about this, but yeah, I want to keep thinking about these.. So Good Night!!😊

Thanks for tagging me! While most people think fireflies are going extinct, this is a miconception. You might no longer see them due to brighter porch lights or certain sprays in the garden. I believe they thrive in moist locations too

The last time I saw them was a few months ago! In Australia and New Zealand you can also find glow worm tours, glow worms are the firefly babies! They cannot fly but glow and are usually thin lines stuck to caves or near mountains. Another fascinating part of nature.

Fireflies remind me of twinkle twinkle little star! Just a memory of childhood. They sometimes also land into my room if I am sleeping with the window open/dark room. One once scared me as I thought what is that highlight yellow color walking around 😂

I hope everyone gets to experience fireflies more often.

I'm so glad to know they're not going extinct, though some of their species are in danger.

Thanks for sharing about glow worms, I had no idea. They sound so amazing.

It's so awesome that you still get fireflies coming into your bedroom. That must be lovely to see at night. 😊

Thanks for sharing, I didn’t know that about glow worms!

I’ve only seen them in books and movies lol

You actually gave me another childhood memory, about the little green inch worms.

They kinda looked like they were glowing since they were like a neon green color.

I would find a lot of green inch worms in my backyard when I was a kid, as well as the brown fuzzy caterpillars I was told they would turn into.

I can’t remember the last time I thought of these memories. Thanks again for sharing! 😃

Up at our family lodge, there is a big field of daisies. They are my Mom's favorite flower, so my Dad planted them all over. We love to go out there at night because it's just thick with fireflies. It's so pretty and magical it's hard to believe.
