Perseverance: When to give up

Perseverance has always been an interesting quality that many people praise others for having.  It is defined as the ability to continue pushing forward towards your goal even when progress is slow or when obstacles are thrown in your way.  It can lead to great accomplishments, like earning a degree or overcoming a personal struggle.  However, perseverance towards a harmful goal can become destructive, hurting yourself and others along the way.

I see this play out most often with my mom.  I have to admit that I do not have the perseverance that she does but I see often how it becomes destructive.  For example, it was her perseverance that allowed her to earn her degree despite multiple setbacks and examination failures along the way but she did not give up until she earned her degree.  However, this same characteristic also causes her to sacrifice her own mental health and well-being to help someone who doesn't want to be helped.  She just can't let things go until her goal has been reached.

Seeing this growing up, I learned that despite being told that I need to persevere, there should be a limit, a time to give up.  I was involved with someone who kept stringing me along, and despite knowing it wasn’t healthy, I couldn’t let go. I kept pushing, trying to show how caring I was and hoping he’d see what he was missing. I also pressured him to give me a clear answer on whether he wanted to be with me or not. In the end, this persistence only caused me to develop mental health issues, leaving me miserable. Looking back, I realize I should have walked away much earlier.

In my opinion, perseverance can be an amazing quality.  However, when trying to reach that goal, your own health starts to decline and it's starting to take over your entire life, it might be time to give up.

What signs might indicate that it’s time to stop pushing for something and let go?

Thank you for the post and the powerful question. I had never looked at perseverance as something you necessarily need to stop because if you want something you always kind of keep working or fighting for it. But after you asked I became curious. I suppose you should stop when and if your perseverance is harming your wellbeing and taking to much out of you. Like if there is more risk than reward.

What signs might indicate that it’s time to stop pushing for something and let go? When you are trying to help someone, but they won’t listen. You have to repeat yourself and keep trying because you want to help, but you are not getting anywhere, and it is frustrating.

Thank you for sharing your story on perseverance. Similarly to your mother, many people struggle with their own limits, and knowing when to stop moving towards a goal. It is such an admirable quality to have, it's inspiring when someone is so determined to complete a task, even when met with so much resistance and setbacks. Still, when pushed too far, it can come at a great cost to one's mental health. I personally struggle with perseverance, and I tend to "give up" quicker than I know I should. It is one of my lesser strengths. I tend to see any challenge as a "sign" that maybe it simply isn't meant for me. But I know this type of thinking isn't always useful. If I stayed thinking like this I wouldn't be with my current boyfriend, we're still together and going strong despite many setbacks out of our control. It can be hard to know when to stop trying or working towards a goal. I think if you've tried absolutely everything you can, and it's still taking a toll on your mental/physical health, affecting your personal relationships, and showing no progress or fulfillment, then it might be time to stop trying. There's no shame in that.

@Meloverse I really relate to what you said. Perseverance is always talked about like it’s always a good thing, but no one really tells you when it turns into something that drains you instead of helping you grow.

For me, one sign that it’s time to let go is when the goal starts taking more from you than it gives back. If you’re losing sleep, constantly anxious, or feeling like you’re losing yourself just to keep something going, that’s a red flag. Another sign is when nothing changes no matter how much effort you put in. If the situation or person keeps repeating the same patterns, it might not be worth the fight anymore.

I think it's important to ask yourself, "Am I doing this for the right reasons, or am I just afraid to let go?" Letting go doesn’t mean you failed. Sometimes it means you’re strong enough to choose peace over chaos.

@Meloverse excellent post! I have always been a person who thrives on perseverance and I never looked at it from a possible negative angle before. Very insightful. This one really got my brain thinking. Thank you.

Thank you for this insightful answer. I tend to get fixated on one task and complete it but I understand that it can be destructive so I will keep limits. I can totally relate to your pain as I have been in a similar position but now, we know our worth and learned our lesson!

This is a great question! I have definitely struggled with pushing myself too hard and later found that there was so much relief in giving up on something that was never meant for me. Perseverance is such a great strength, but it's so easy to take too far. I think as with everything, it has to be practiced with discretion, and sometimes you just have to find that line through trial and error.

@Meloverse I completely understand what you’re saying. I think one of the biggest signs that it’s time to let go is when pursuing something starts to hurt your mental or physical health. If you’re constantly stressed, anxious, or unhappy because of it, that’s a warning sign. Another sign is when no matter how much effort you put in, nothing seems to change or improve—sometimes your energy is better spent elsewhere. I’ve also noticed that when I start resenting the situation or the people involved, it’s a sign I need to step back. Perseverance is important, but knowing when to protect yourself and let go is just as important.

@Meloverse.  I really relate to what you’re saying. Perseverance can be such a double-edged sword—it’s inspiring when it helps us achieve something meaningful, but it can also hurt us when we keep going at the expense of our well-being. I think some signs it might be time to let go are feeling constant stress or exhaustion, noticing that your mental or physical health is declining, or realizing that the situation isn’t improving despite your efforts. Another sign is when your persistence is no longer helping the people involved, or it’s only causing more pain for yourself. Sometimes letting go isn’t failure—it’s protecting yourself so you can focus your energy where it truly matters.
