Practicing Positive Self-Talk Through Affirmations
Negative self-talk can sneak into our minds at any time, usually at a time when we are already stressed. However, we can build positive self-talk with the simplest and most uplifting ways to quiet that invasive voice by using positive affirmations. A short sentence, sometimes beginning with the words I am, can be only a few words, but very powerful in use.
Using affirmations is easy, and it can be peaceful, thoughtful, or fun. You can say them aloud in the mirror each morning while you brush your teeth, write them on sticky notes to pop on the mirror or doors, or even set them as reminders on your phone. The key is repetition. Our brains learn through consistency. Over time, these positive messages start to replace the negative ones. Instead of instantly thinking, “I am a failure” your mind begins to butt in with, “Excuse me? I am a work in progress.” It’s like giving your brain a gentle exercise session in optimism.
The best part is that affirmations can be deeply personal and creative. Whether it’s “I am an undestructable storm” “I am growing every day” or even “I am not perfect, but I am progressing”, these words have real power. They help us approach the tough times with kindness instead of criticism. With practice, affirmations turn self-doubt into self-belief, helping us see ourselves not as our mistakes, but as capable, evolving people. And honestly, who couldn’t use a little more of that kind of encouragement in their day?
Do you use affirmations in your life? If yes, what are some of your favorites? Mine is based on a verse in Hebrews. "Hope anchors my soul".
How do you remind yourself of your affirmations? I love to use post-it notes. I have them on the back of my bedroom door and on my mirror. My mirror says, "Look at you, all healing and stuff."
If you need affirmation help, there is a wonderful app called I Am. The free version gives you enough affirmations for years.

I understand how hard it can be. I always thought they had to be these long sentences or huge declarations. I was in residential mental health treatment for 4 months. We were required to have an affirmation every day. One girl had the same affirmation "I am a good person." I finally got to know her enough to ask. She said, "I don't think I'm a good person, but I want to believe I am." Just saying that to herself every day, and reminding herself of the "good" things she's doing in her life, got her by until she finally believed it. Affirmations can be very powerful with practice.

I always preach the idea of positive self talk! It's so so important. There was a time in my life where my internal thoughts were always negative and berating towards myself. Once that stopped, I have seen noticeable differences in the way I feel throughout my day to day life.

It really is important. I noticed I was doing a lot of negative self-talk. So I started setting affirmations all over the house. Every time I want to say to myself, "I am so stupid", I say, "Okay, well you won't make this mistake next time!" It's a little bit of work but with affirmations, it can be easier to make that change.
Indeed, there's nothing that influence oir thoughts and beliefs more than our self-talk talk and maybe it's time we started working on positive affirmations ð«¶
