Values are fundamental beliefs and principles that guide our attitudes, behaviors, and decision-making. They play a crucial role in shaping our identities and influencing the way we interact with the world. It's fascinating how these values can transform throughout our lives due to a variety of factors.

Life experiences often serve as catalysts for changes in our values. These experiences can be both positive and negative. For instance, personal achievements, such as landing a dream job or achieving a long-term goal, can lead to a greater emphasis on values like ambition or perseverance. On the other hand, facing adversity, loss, or hardship can prompt a reevaluation of values, placing greater importance on qualities like resilience, empathy, or compassion.

Cultural exposure and diversity also contribute to the evolution of our values. Interacting with people from different backgrounds and belief systems can broaden our perspectives and lead to a deeper appreciation for values like tolerance, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity.

Moreover, as we progress through various life stages, such as adolescence, adulthood, or parenthood, our priorities and values often shift to align with our evolving responsibilities and personal growth.

Think of a value that you have now that you did not used to have, or one that has become more important to you. What life experiences led to this value changing? How does this change affect you now?

Please share your thoughts and experiences on how your values have evolved.

Reflecting on the evolution of our values can help us embrace change while cultivating the Being (Relationship to Self) Dimension of the Inner Developmental Goals.

@SoulfullyAButterfly What a powerful post! I completely resonate with how values evolve throughout life, and it’s amazing to reflect on the experiences that shape our beliefs. For me, one value that has grown significantly is empathy. Growing up, I was more focused on individual achievement and personal goals, but as I encountered different life challenges and met people from diverse backgrounds, I began to understand the importance of seeing the world through others’ eyes. This shift didn’t come easily, it was born out of personal struggles, interactions with people who had different life experiences, and realizing that sometimes, true success is about lifting others up as much as it is about personal achievements.

This change in perspective has deeply influenced my relationships and my approach to community building. Now, I prioritize kindness and understanding in both personal and professional settings, which has led to stronger connections and a greater sense of fulfillment. It also encourages me to challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone, to see every situation not just from my own lens, but from others' as well.

The concept of embracing change through the evolution of our values really hits home because it's not just about adjusting our goals but also about aligning with a deeper sense of purpose. Thank you for sparking this reflection! It's a reminder that embracing change can lead to profound growth and stronger connections with the world around us. 💙

I had never failed until recently. But Recently I have failed so many times and yet I got up and tried again. I have grown the value of perseverance. I have learnt to fail and try again. I have learnt that there is always hope and failure is not ultimate.

@SoulfullyAButterfly

I've always led a fairly carefree life, with a career in the arts. I don't make a lot of money, I never saw myself owning a house, and this was all perfectly okay with me! Now that I am in my mid-30s, and have a dependent (my dog), financial stability has become a lot more important to me. I'm not sure that counts as a value, but it's certainly become a much more important part of my life recently. The reality is that it costs a lot of money to live in the city I live in. And having recently found myself needing to change careers, it was important to me to choose something that has the potential to provide more financial stability. I feel a little bit of shame admitting this, as I sort of used to look down on people that cared about money, or wanted to be rich. But as I've grown up, I've learned that money is just one of the realities of life, and it's okay to value it.

@OtterlyPositive thank you for sharing this! I hope you can process this shame/guilt as it is very true that while we can enjoy our passions, we do end up needing to reach financial/material stability to flourish. Reading your reflection here, I felt you were humble about this and so I feel caring about "only" money is a different "lavish" sort of focus, which differs from wanting to reach financial and material stability -- which impacts our flourishing/wellbeing as studied in many studies!

I’ve noticed my values have definitely shifted over time. Earlier, I didn’t think much about empathy, but after going through some personal challenges and connecting with people from different walks of life, it became really important to me. I now try to listen more and judge less. This change helps me stay grounded and understand others better.

@SoulfullyAButterfly

Thank you for sharing such a reflective and insightful post. I completely agree that values evolve with time, experience, and growth, and it’s so powerful to pause and actually reflect on that evolution.

One value that has become much more important to me in recent years is compassion, especially self-compassion. I used to be extremely hard on myself, always pushing for perfection and measuring my worth by my productivity. But after going through a period of burnout and a few tough personal losses, I realized how unsustainable and harmful that mindset was.

During that time, I encountered people who showed me genuine empathy and grace, even when I felt like I wasn’t “doing enough.” That experience really shifted something in me. I began to understand that compassion isn’t just something we offer others—it’s something we must offer ourselves if we want to grow in a healthy way.

Now, practicing self-compassion helps me stay grounded. It softens my inner critic and allows me to navigate life with more patience, for both myself and others. It’s made me a more supportive friend and a more present person overall.

One value that has definitely evolved for me is self-compassion. I used to believe that being hard on myself was the only way to succeed, like if I was not constantly pushing, I was falling behind. But after going through trauma and burnout, I started realizing that healing and softness are just as powerful as resilience and drive. It took a lot of unlearning to even see self-compassion as a strength and not a weakness. Now it is something I try to practice intentionally, especially when I catch myself spiraling into guilt or self-blame. That shift has changed the way I show up for myself and for others in a really meaningful way.

Self care for me, I didn't used to practice it much as I didn't find time for it. Now I have started to do this I spend time on myself which has made it easier to look after other people.
